Tantal AK74 side folder

Just curious as to if this would be a good buy? Im not wanting to spend a ton of money or an AK74 variant, but I want something reliable enough and with a side/under folder I can throw it in my Jeep as a "truck gun". I like the 5.45x39, especially since ammo is cheap as hell.

Also, are there other side folding stocks out there I could switch the one on this gun too?

At that price point, it almost certainly has a US made non chrome lined Green Mountain barrel, which may or may not have the correct rate of twist, and may or may not have the correct chamber dimensions.

These GM barrels have a dismal reputation for not stabilizing the bullets, causing them to key hole dramatically, and are made out of very soft steel.

It's also not chrome lined, so you'll really need to keep on top of the maintenance if you are going to be firing all that cheap corrosive ammo.

Century Arms is a lot like Walmart, they'll tell a manufacturer how much they're willing to pay, and that's all that they will pay for a barrel, receiver, build, etc. Cheap is cheap for a reason.

Bottom line, I'd pass on anything that has a US made barrel.

Here's an excellent thread on why most Century builds with US made barrels should be avoided.

Thanks for the info. New to AK's, I skimmed the sticky thread on AK types.

I'm trying to keep my budget for a AK down, but obviously don't want complete crap. So its definitely a comprise on price and quality.

I'd like an Arsenal built AK but I can't justify spending that money on a truck gun.

Anyone have a good place to get AK's? JG Sales is about the only place I've found that has 5.45 guns.

I don't have any experience with the Gewehrwerks builds, but take a look at Atlantic Firearms.

If you must buy crap, buy crap here.

Henderson at least makes an effort to certify their rifles.

I'd recommend staying away from it for the reasons Templar gave.

My AK74 used to have the GM barrel in it, it 'keyholed dramatically', and its group at 100 yards was about a six-foot by six-foot pattern. If you get one and shoot it much, it'll just end up pissing you off in the long run.

Here's a guy who builds authentic, collector-grade AK47s:http://wellcoarms.com/

He is building more of these, which are reasonably priced:
