what spare part do you take for field repare?

Ok newbie here. I don’t know if this question has been asked here before or not, I tried to do a search but it wasn’t working (seams to be a hit or miss thing). What spare part do you take for field repairs if you go to a training class or hunting trip where you may be putting a lot of rounds down range. What are the most common parts to break / where out? Just want to be prepared if something goes wrong (Murphy’s Law seams to follow me around). Like I said this may have already been answered but the search isn’t working for me right now so if it has please direct me to where it has been discussed.

Thank you in advance,

P.S. love the forum, lots of great info here!

This is something you're going to need to decide for yourself, as a lot of people have differing opinions on what spare parts to bring to the range.

I personally bring an entire BCG w/ all the workings, so if anything associated with the bolt breaks then I have every part I could possibly need. I also bring an H buffer (I usually run an H2) so if the gun starts to slow down I can switch out buffers. And I usually keep my tools in my truck in case something really goes wrong and I need to disassemble the gun. But that's me.

If you have a quality rifle/BCG, then all you should need to carry with you is a spare bolt (I carry one in my MIAD grip)

If you don't have a quality rifle....then carry a spare rifle

What Ironman said. I'm not a hunter, so I can't comment on that type of situation, but when I'm taking a class or just going to the range on my own, I bring a spare rifle. I do this so that I can still make the most of my training/range time. If something does happen to a rifle, then I check it out when I get home where I don't feel pressured to get it done at the range.

The above is just a plan as I shoot and use quality firearms, so I've never had to actually do the above in real life yet.

I have SR-15 repair kits in my SOPMOD(s).

Other than that. Magazines.

I carry a spare bolt and lube and multi tool. I keep a cleaning kit in my bag with basic cleaning stuff as well.

I generally carry a spare bolt, cam pin and firing pin along with some other misc. small parts - gas rings, extractor and spring, trigger and hammer springs.

For a training class, I always take at least two rifles, a spare bolt that will fit both rifles (I have standard and e3 bolts), an extra sling, batteries for my lights, and of course cleaning gear and lube.

A spare rifle is obviously ideal, but if it's not in your budget, carry at least a spare bolt. I always carry a complete BCG and lube. I haven't had to swap it out yet, but as my round count increases by the thousands, I'm sure something will break at some point, and I can just swap out the BCG and worry about diagnosing and repairing it later in order to spend more time shooting.

Of course, don't get complacent just because you have a spare part. It is always best to keep up with a regular maintenance schedule for replacing worn out parts before they break. It's always more fun to shoot than to be the guy with the "technical difficulties"

That being said, if anything in my lower breaks, I'm pretty much screwed unless I can beg for parts from someone more prepared than myself.

I had just a few range trips over the past 20+ years where something shit the bed, whatever platform, and it was retired to either fix/replace parts I had later, sometimes cutting the trip dramatically. Led me down the path of going a little more than you need.

Total spare BCG, LPK, charging handle, spare springs and collection of buffers(different sizes). AND TOOLS NECESSARY FOR CHANGES(punches, sight tools, small brass hammer!!!)

This is my prepare for the worst hope for the best strategy.

I keep this all packed in my range bag(back pack) - comes with me every trip.

For classes/training I always have a secondary rifle/pistol.

Two is one, one is none...

This. The only outdoor range that I know of near where I live is a 35 mile drive. I'm not leaving once I get out there. Take everything for any possible scenario.

Second weapon and cleaning gear, but in truth that is only there for an emergency. It is making sure that I am not wasting my tuition if something where to go very very wrong, but more likely to be available as a loaner for someone that may have made bad choices in the gear that they brought.
Maybe I am out of line here, but speaking for myself and what I am guessing most of us are probably doing, is ringing out our gear in a sort-of baptism by fire. If it can run without cleaning and only lubing through a three day Magpul Dynamics course (running 1700-1800 rounds in the heat and fine talcom powder dust of southern Colorado) then I know it will run whenever I need it to.

I typically have another rifle. Though I carry a full carrier and bolt assembly just in case.

Thank you for the responses. Sounds like a back up BCG (I want to get one from BCM anyway) a charging handle and a LPK will do the job. I do intend to take my cleaning kit and tools. Unfortunately a spare rifle is not an option at this time and as far as what some consider a QUALITY rifle I have a RRA (I know but I got it before I found M4CARBINE, my next one will be a BCM or Colt) that is the reason I am asking before I go on a long excursion where parts wont be redily available across the street or I have to order it over the net. I hope to not have a malfunction but as with any machine things break and I want to be prepared if and when it happens. I don’t put thousands of rounds through my rifle trying to get a malfunction like some folks do on here (not saying its a bad thing I understand you want to know the limits of your gear) I go shoot and I come home and clean. Its how I was raised and it’s just what I do.

Thanks for not bashing the new guy, that’s why I’m here to become more informed. All responses appreciated.

I keep a spare FCG, gas rings, bolt cam pin, and an extra extractor and spring in my kit. I used to keep a spare BCG, but it turned into another rifle and I have yet to replace it. I probably will just buy a spare bolt instead if BCM ever restocks them.

Spare bolt to the range. Spare upper or rifle to training class.
