Shaving FSB Questions

Is it possible to shave down the FSB without removing it from the barrel ? I was thinking of using a dremel with cutting wheel, removing the metal needed then taping things off and coating raw metal with a high temp spray paint. Would this be doable or is it not possible without removing the FSB.

it is possible...

1. Wrap up and protect the barrel (metal shavings get every where)
2. Secure in upper receiver block or barrel vise
3. Use the fiberglass reinforced cut-off wheels, and the round sanding wheels
4. Work slowly and carefully

good luck.

Or you can send to Virginia Arms or Adco

As mentioned it can be done. It is a bit more difficult but have patience, prep it correctly and take your time. I often use a high temp paint which works well, but you might look into something like Birchwood / Casey Aluma Black which replicates the AR / M4 phosphate type of finish well. It can be picked up in many gun related stores and is quick and easy to use. It also treats the metal and is not a pure topical thing like paint.

Grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut, then smooth over the sharp edges. 15 minutes and you're done. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry.

Yes, it can be done. Personally I think it's easier if you can manipulate the FSB a little, but it is doable with patience.

Once I finish I then I use some fine sandpaper and smooth everything out nice. I will then paint it with Alumahyde or high temp black paint.

I think Robb Jensen likes to use Norrells MolyCoat.

Also... be careful not to spill milk on the FSB at any time.

ROFL.

On topic now. Is there a reason you can't take the FSB off? It would make things a heck of a lot easier. I watched a friend do this once and chingered up his barrel something fierce cause he was too lazy to take his off. Like has been said, you can do it. But be cautious and take your time.

I could take it off but I figured why take off the flash hider, knock out all the pins, remove everything and then have to order a new crush washer (none available local) put everything back together. It just seemed to me that if I was to tape everything up real good and take my time and be careful that it might be possible to save some steps. I watched a few youtube videos on cutting one down and it seems that everything that was done could be done without removing the sight with a little prep and patience.
