Need AK magazine carriage

I broke down and bought (or ordered at least) myself a Vector AK in order to take a 2-day AK operator's class in January. Obviously I'm going to need a way to carry a few mags with me.

For the AR I run an Eagle M4 FB chest rig with the open-top kydex-lined pouches on it. I like this setup because I don't have to fiddle with flaps and such. I also like to keep a single AR mag on my belt in a single pouch.

I'd like to somewhat replicate this for the AK, but I understand that because of the locking tab on the back of the AK mags kydex, leather, and other open-top designs don't work quite as well. I thought that Eagle made a chest rig for AK mags that is similar to the one I use for the AR but they are kydex-free flap-top pouches, and I can't seem to find it on their site now.

Anyone have any suggestions?

FWIW

I run my normal chest rig with the mags upright and the flaps tucked in

Looks like they have that one in black From what I can tell from 10-8forums they were supposed to release a version with the new shoulder straps and such two months ago but they don't seem to have released them yet.

I just got the new M4 version and the changes they made are huge improvements. Hopefully they'll release the updated AK version before January.

Have you run yours with the flaps tucked in behind the mags at all? Did it work OK that way?

Eagle releasing something for sale, and it actually being available to purchase are not necessarily the same thing.

Eagle is quoting new dealer orders at 18-25+ weeks. I got a few plate carriers in the other week (in sept.) that I had ordered in March.

Eagle AK 47 MOLLE Chest Rig from Triad Tactical. I ran this through the Vickers class and was very happy - it is basically the same as my Eagle M4 carrier, but without the hard inserts.

Mind you, I ran .223 AK magazines, but it should work equally well with all types.

I use the same one, it's a nice rig. It's oversized slightly to fit over armor.

I have the exact same one, it's a quality piece of gear for the money.

Thanks. That looks good.

I view Kalashnikov weapons as battle-field pick-up only. As such, I do not AK-orient my setup, but rather learned how to press my g2g M4 setup into acceptable AK setup.

I run all of my AK magazines rounds up, pointing to the strong side. I just stuff them into double M4 mag pouches. Since I generally run 2 to 3 speed reload pouches and 3 or 4 feeder pouches for my work guns, it gives me 3 to 4 AK reloads, and whatever I feel compelled to drop into my dump pouch. As said before, it's pretty rare to need more ammo than that, especially in a battle-field pick-up situation.

Sub-loads, honestly, I cheat my own system here, but I had a good reason to do it. I put two Spectre (specter?) double mag pouches on a MOLLE drop-leg platform, magazines stored rounds down, pointed to the rear, just like I run subload M4 magazines. I just like it, leave me alone. The mag pouch is not terribly secure during dynamic movement, but the lid is adjustable, so I just ran the furthest back mag pouch closed, used it as a feeder to the forward pouch.

There are a few manufacturers that make adjustable double mag pouches that work pretty well for both M4 and AK mags. bulldogequipment.us is one that I know of, there is somebody else out there, but I can't think of them right now.

I have since changed my subload to an HSGI small panel with two triad tactical flop-tops. No way I am shoving AK mags into those. I may severely deviate from my thinking on AK series weapons and pick up the blade-tech kydex pouches for the sub-load. Not happy about it though.
