MOE hand guard vs. DD Omega Rail

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has, or has had both the Magpul MOE hand guard and the Daniel Defense Omega rail.

I've been shooting my BCM Mid-length for just over a year I'm considering replacing the MOE hand guard. It is my only AR and I use it for the range, HD and hopefully a class or two in 2012. I actually like the MOE and have it set up with a VFG, IWC Micro QD sling mount and Viking Tactics / Surefire Mini L4 light in a IWC mount.

I don't need a free float rail for improved accuracy and I don't need the extra rail space for any optics or lasers as I'd run just the VFG and light. The Omega would give me a stronger upper and remove the small amount of play in the MOE. Is that advantage worth the cost of the Omega rail?

Well since "wiggle" in the HG has nothing to do with anything, I would say stick with what you got.

It sounds like your decision is going to be based more on Tacti-cool looks over basic functionality.

The DD Omega is a great, lightweight quad-rail system and the weight trade-off between that and your MOE handguard is negligible (as they're surprisingly almost identical in weight). If you have no use or want for rail-mounted optics/accessories, then the Omega will simply be a "look and feel" choice that costs you money. It's up to you as to whether it's worth it or not. Will the Omega feel more solid up front? Sure, but like others have said, a little wiggle in the MOE is ignorable from a function standpoint.

On a side note: I have a Noveske skinny carbine that I swapped out the stock MOE guard for a DD Omega and I love it! But for me, it's a looks AND function thing.

I have both and like them both. Unless you have money to burn stay with what you have. IMHO the only short coming of the MOE is that its non-free floating.

I would stick with the MOE. No reason to spend $200 for something you really don't need.

Thanks for the feed back guys. One of the voices in my head was also telling me the Omega's advantage over MOE was minimal considering the price. I'll be sticking with the MOE.

Um the omega is free float. And as stated above the Moe is not.

The omega is really nice. I had one. Amazing quality and very tight for what it is.

Ive been fighting the good fight myself trying to stick to MOE on my noveske. I think Im winning as a number of decent 9" rails have come through the EE and I still got my $$$. Think of it as "moe" money for ammo.

MOE's rock! Take the money you were going to spend on something you don't need and buy more ammo or take a training class.

I am thinking of finally taking the IWC MOE off of my 6920 and putting a 7.0 Omega on it. Ever since I added a 4x32 ACOG to this carbine and a Geissele SSA, I am really wanting to push the accuracy limits.

Any thoughts on that? I like the "zero modifications" and "true free float".

My 2 cents anyway. I just need to find a 7.0 Omega in stock now and a buyer for my MOE.

Unless you're shooting handloads or paying $2/round for match ammo, don't kid yourself about "pushing" accuracy limits.

Me personally hate the MOE handguard...as soon as I installed it...it just was not for me....that is not to say it wont be for you.

MOE is the cheaper of the two...so starts with one first...if you like it...keep it...if you hate it..someone will buy it off you

Like my dad used to tell me was I think you are wanting to change something just to be changing something. I have been able to shoot carbines wit stock ,moe and fancy rails and to me the gun still goes bang when the trigger is pulled.
