The Mini14 is not cool, but I've never seen one that didn't work.

Every SIG 556 I've laid hands on was a rectal wart. They are awful firearms and a prime example of what SIG is all about these days. It's the XD of the carbine world.

If you have the need to be different, do it with something other than a SIG 556.

Pretty much my experience. I have two Minis. One is an old GB that is my "Trunk Gun" and the other is a recent model GB that is more accurate (for a Mini) in a Troy chassis. They aren't ARs but I can't complain about either as they always go bang.

I have one. It's heavy, over gassed and always goes bang. Always.
It's my beater. I have thousands of rounds thru it and never regreted buying it.

Yes sir. Only rifle I have that throws brass ahead of my bushy. I shoot from the patio and can generally pick up the brass there. On the sig and bushy I have to look through the grass ahead of the rifle.

I would happily trade my 556 for a Mini 14 or 30! The sig 556 is such a POS. In fact this being the first Sig anything I ever bought I will no longer consider even buying one of there pistols! Because I feel they foisted this POS on the public. I bought when they first became available. Screw Sig Sauer

I had an early 556 with swiss internals, and it did run reasonably well for the ~800 rounds I owned it. Unfortunately with the cheap israeli furniture and cheapo barrel and NH quality control, it also shot about 5-6 MOA with match ammo and the top rail popped off after the first 200 rounds, my eotech was pointing at the floor about 10 feet in front of me. Also the stock broke the first day I had it, replacement stock broke after about 1 month of recreational range use. Needless to say stay away from this garbage.

ETA: Also the the sights are shit and the magazine is so horrible I would say you'd be faster single loading the rounds in by hand as opposed to trying to clear the mag induced malfunctions every single round.

Shit. I'm almost afraid to reply. I have a newer patrol carbine version. It was a single shot out of the box. I sent it to SIG and I purchased a Swiss style lower and an additional SAN folding stock for the factory lower. SIG replaced something with the gas tube or ports....I didn't pay to much attention. I got it back a few weeks and ago and have not had a chance to take it out. With all of the new furniture it's a pretty little rifle, but that doesn't mean much until I take it out and run a few hundred rounds through. I'll let you know. should be going out tomorrow if the weather holds.

I just put a 551 lower on mine as well. I haven't shot it yet but I'd be happy to hear fom someone that has shot one of the new lowers. To the OP, in the end just know you aren't buying a SIG 551 from the 80s like lucky SOBs like steyr were able to . If you have a quality AR and/or AK and this is your range toy, have at it!

I like mine. It is heavy, but works well and shows acceptable accuracy. The ergos are AR like, but not really the same.

Even if you pack it full of snow, it still goes bang. Gotta love the m14's. Unlike others in this thread who got rid of theirs, I just can't find reason to, even if it's the one gun I have with an NC star scope mounted to it. But heck, it's only for shooting cans anyways, as .223 is cheaper than hell around here.

Someone mentioned the SIG was heavy. Anyone have a REAL weight of it. I rarely go off of MFG weight's because most companies asides from a few top tier type companies tent to "offset" their weight a tad to make things look more appealing.

I agree about the mini they are a hoot to shoot and always go bang.. I got one years ago really cheap and every time I think about selling it I just come back with another reason not to after I take it to the range..

mine started it's life as a 556, but replaced the lower and stock with Swiss 551 stuff. Great rifle.

I happen to like my Sig556. It's heavy, but so is my Galil. Mine has been 100% reliable, but I have not shot a ton through it. At the current price of less than $1000, I think it's a buy. How about a few pictures?

FWIW, I have two friends who each have a 556 Classic, and both have been flawless from day one. I think both were sourced circa 2009 (or right after the Classic was released, whenever that was). Still seems to be luck-of-the-draw as far as canting issues on the older rifles.

Love it. I picked up the latest Sig attempt about a month ago (551A1). It's nice as it is, but I do want to work towards getting the Swiss lower receiver for it.

Are you planning on upgrading to the Swiss iron sights?

The steel Swiss lower is expensive and adds weight, but it helps with the balance making the rifle feel better and was worth it to me.
I'm going to something about the sights, I just haven't decided on if I am going with the Swiss stuff or just mount a scope.

I have two SIG 556s and have killed over 200 wild hogs and dozens of coyotes with them flawlessly.

I find it compelling that in a pool of 50k members that we have 5 members that have had reasonable success with the Sig rifles. I have only witnessed ONE Sig rifle ever make it through a class/hard use environment. For me that's also compelling.

Don't be lulled into a false sense of reliability or worthiness based upon a sample size of a few guns that actually work...

Oh, and for the record I owned one.
