Practical/Hunting rifle and scope rings

I admit, I'm overwhelmed by the shear volume of what is out there.

I'm trying to mount an optic with a 1.6" max OD on a Winchester Model 70. That would seem to indicate to me that I need a ring/base combination that gets me raised up to 0.85" from bottom of mount to centerline of rings, or 0.25 to the inside bottom of the ring, for a 30mm tube (30mm/2=15mm=~0.6". 0.85"-0.6"=0.25").

Is that right? and is this the information that's given on rings? and does that information include the base?

For hunting guns like Rem700s and Win70s I like Leupold steel 1pc mounts with steel STD rings. They make them in 30mm too.

The problem I have isn't just limited to what rings to buy, but how to size them and get what I want/need without having dozens of parts sitting in front of me to choose from.

I don't mind ordering one set of bases and maybe two or three ring heights, and sending back what doesn't work, but I'm trying to zero in on at least the correct method.

Ditto on the Leupold STD combo. I've used that combo with the lowest 30mm rings on a Rem 700 VS and 5R. The Loopy 3.5-10x40 MKIV scopes sit as low as possible w/o contact. Many .308 168's and 175's with no issues.

Whats the scope, whats the rifles barrel profile, and did you need rings and bases? Do you want built in MOA and do you have a weight requirement?

I use NF stuff, but its not the only option I like it cause its light and strong and priced right.

Rob, The Warne steel rings are strong, have a set on my 7mm-08, fired a little over 200 rounds pre season last year and there was zero movement. I also have the Leupold standard rings on the 30-06 and they have been fine as well. I can't speak for the aluminum one piece Talley's you see on some hunting guns or the aluminum EGW that are similar to the Warne's.

I would go no taller than med, I have the mediums on my 08 with a 33mm obj and lows would be fine since there's plenty of clearance. If you want a stock pack like the Eagle or the new Triad version, go medium and use the internal shell loops. I carry extra rounds in there and soft ears.

Scope is either Leupold VX-3 1.5-5 or 1.75-6 (haven't decided 100% yet) but in either case the largest OD is 1.6".

Rifle is a Winchester M70 Featherweight Compact.

No need for MOA, fancy solutions, QD, etc. I need inexpensive, strong, light. Nothing fancy. This is NOT a sniper/precision rifle it's a basic, lightweight, hunting rifle.

I own the rifle, haven't bought the scope yet, but it will be one of those two. Caliber is .308 on the rifle.

Anxious to see this come together. I love the sport-utility bolt gun concept.

I lose a chunk of velocity out of my 16" barrel. I think my next one will be a 20".

Will be taking Randy Cain's Practical Rifle with this gun next month. Writing it up for SWAT too.

Get the Talley steel bases with the removable steel Talley low rings. I like the screw detachable ones for a sleek, non-snag mount. And the screw can be replaced with a screw in lever that allows quicker dismounting, should that be important to you. The low variety will mount the scopes you mentioned or even one with a 42 mm. ojective.

Avoid windage screw bases as marketed by Leupold and others...think Murphy's law.

Here's an old M-8 Leupold 6x42 mm. with the Talleys on a Model 70 Sporter .30-06 in a fiberglass McMillan stock.
