Fenix makes their PD20 R5 (http://www.fenixlight.com/viewnproduct.asp?id=59) light -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gWM4gq3mu04/T0ooPit-2KI/AAAAAAAAEj8/ittdm8TaF88/s800/Fenix_PD20_R5.jpg

It uses (1) CR123, has a clip, multiple levels of brightness (9, 38, 90, & 180), long run times, has a smooth front bezel, and is affordable which are all good. It also has a reverse clicky and strobe/SOS/beacon functions that I have no interest in.

Does anyone know of a light this size, with comparable levels of brightness, long run times, has a clip, uses the head to switch levels of brightness, has a smooth front bezel that will not tear my hand up every time I reach into my pocket, forward clicky w/ momentary on, and does not have strobe/SOS/beacon settings. Price is also key as I have lost my last two EDC lights and am not looking to lose a $300 light.

The Sunwayman V10R might be worth taking a look at. It has a clicky for momentary and constant on and a control ring for variable brightness from min. to max....no blinky stuff.

the sunwayman V10R-T6 is my favourite light of that size. i really like the infinite output control. it's really bright with a 16430 rechargeable battery.

I have a 4Sevens Quark 123 Tactical (http://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?cPath=297_306&products_id=1652) that might be worth a look. On the minus side, it does have some of the modes (strobe, SOS) that you are clearly not interested in. On the plus side, only two modes are selectable/memorized at any one time - so you could just program the Max and Low settings (which are switched by rotating the bezel) and never use (or even see) the other modes. It has a clip and a 'momentary-on' tailcap. Personally I don't find the knurling overly aggressive. At $59 I think they're quite reasonable.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The Sunwayman looks much longer than the PD20 but I could not find a pic of them together. Is it just the pictures or is it longer?

The Quark 123 Tactical looks promising though.

According to the specs, the Sunwayman is .17 inches longer than the Fenix.

.170" isn't much at all, it just looked longer in the pics.

I have this light, used it in low light pistol courses. It does not have a momentary on switch.

Based on the recommendations in this thread I bought a Sunwayman V10R and received it yesterday.

I like it and the adjustability is a great feature. I wish they had a textured rubber switch cover for it though.

for an EDC I like a AA batt model. I use eneloops but I can get replacements in any gas station.

I have a Fenix LD10 with two brightness levels and a pushbutton tailcap on my keychain and I like it a lot.

I also have a PD10 in my briefcase and it's small size and pocket clip work great on the bill of my cap but it's not a pushbutton...

for an EDC I like a AA batt model.

I started out with a Streamlight Stylus Pro a couple of years ago -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9_6scOO0ue0/SXYitBd4gRI/AAAAAAAAAiw/83VeziSibxY/s800/stylus-pro.jpg

It takes (2) AAA's, was cheap and reliable, had decent output for a light its size (48 lumens per Streamlight's site). Streamlight puts a plastic sleeve inside to protect the body. The only problem I had was I lost it.

I replaced it with this, EagleTac's PN20a2 -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YdokFQJ7uSg/T1qmPeXvbJI/AAAAAAAAEsU/qFzdrOcyGew/s400/image.jpg

It also takes (2) AAA's and has a two modes, low (22 lumens) and a high (100 lumens). It is bright, has good throw. I carried it for about three weeks until the cheap POS pocket clip broke. I was at the grocery store and bent down next to my shopping kart and the clip hit part of the cart's railing and it snapped right off like nothing. A new clip was more than half what the light cost. Also, when I took it apart the inside is all corroded (it shipped from a store with the batteries installed it it). Really turned me off towards anything EagleTac.

Just to get all the facts in, it looks like they have changed the design of their pocket clip to something more durable -

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ztq2L8dk2NI/T1qpyk8Jc_I/AAAAAAAAEsg/x5OiCBz-_y0/s400/EagleTac_PN20a2_-_New_Clip_Design.jpg

It is sitting around the house all apart, waiting for me to address the corroded inner tube.

So I went back to this -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9_6scOO0ue0/SXYitBd4gRI/AAAAAAAAAiw/83VeziSibxY/s800/stylus-pro.jpg

Until I lost that one a couple of weeks ago, which prompted me create this thread. My work is business casual and the pockets on some of the pants are barely there and the light got pushed out the pocket and it was gone.

I wanted something shorter so I thought about Streamlight's MicroStream -

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6C14YtG5Nqc/SXZLdNdqz0I/AAAAAAAAAjQ/141T3D7cJAQ/s800/microstream.jpg

It has the forward clicky I want but I just was not impressed with it. Single output just does not cut it anymore.

Finding a single AAA powered light that has a forward clicky isn't the easy thing to do. Most lites that size use a twist on switch that is built into the head or tail of the light.

Based on the posts in this thread I figure I would try a light that uses a single CR123 and ended up with the Sunwayman V10R -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CtTdVYwnFr0/T1qteRXTuAI/AAAAAAAAEso/Ah-exnQy7Vw/s400/Sunwayman_V10r.jpg

I carried it clipped to my pocket for a couple of hours yesterday while I was wearing pants and it felt a little big (OD wise). Fridays are casual so I wore jeans and I did not notice it as much as when I wore the pants. Time will tell how I like EDC'ing a light with the bigger ID than the AAA ones I previously had.

No pic, but for years I have carried an Inova light on my keychain. It has a green bulb/light, 3 settings, and on high this thing is unreal bright. Can easily shine a coon in top of a tall tree. Ive done this. More than enough light on low to get around the house or woods, let alone on high. At room distance it will hurt your eyes.
Its also USA made, been 100% reliable, small, lightweight, just a great, handy little light.

Edit: Your RIGHT, ra2bach...I got my lights mixed up!
I was just trying to give a very low cost alternative/idea to OP and others. I aint lying, the brightness on this little thing is incredible, but no it cant compare to the bigger lights of course.

Check out the offerings from Jet Beam. They have lots of models but the BC10 is my EDC. Best bang for my buck.

I think Inova and Photon are different makers of relatively the same light. :p

but no matter, I know the lights you're talking about and I have them in all my kit bags, etc., but I don't think they are the equivalent of what the OP is asking for...

Look up the Olight i1 EOS.
http://www.batteryjunction.com/olight-i1.html

Or the Eagletac (EAGTac) D25c Mini.
http://www.eagletac-usa.com/products/productList.aspx?uid=1-17

Both run on rechargeable cr123's, and have a simple interface. Both are twisty lights. Both have good clips, and the D25c has a nice belt pouch too. The D25 is brighter and whiter, but the Olight has clearer distinctions between L-M-H levels, and probably gives better color rendition due to the warmer color.

my buddy just bought one of these for business dress and likes it/hasn't lost it so far. I thought about it but I'm trying to get away from AAA batts and prefer the double A lights for EDC use. the earlier version of the Fenix LD10 has only two brightness setting - 106 and 15 lumens. nice light...

with a single AA batt I can have a clicky tailcap and generally over 100 lumens with the R5 LED. (the XM-L units get around 200 lumens from a single AA)

Streamlight has this new light coming out, the ProTac 2AAA -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WquigD7IrLU/T1_U49zohGI/AAAAAAAAEtI/jFu0R659Z9c/s640/ProductLines_88039%2520protac%25202aaa.jpg

It has 2 modes, 80 lumens for 1.5h and 10 lumens for 30 hours. It also has a strobe mode but it looks like you change modes with the switch and I am not a big fan of that.

Even though I did bad mouth them, now that I see Eagle-Tac has redesigned the light so that it has a better clip design I might be inclined to try another one, but only if I could get it at a good price from a place with a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. The first thing I would do is take it apart and see if the batteries leaked at all and caused the inner tube to corrode. If no corrosion then I would get some plastic in there as a liner.

IMO once you use a light that has an additional "turbo" mode as Fenix calls it you do not want something that just has a single output.

very nice. I'll give that one a look for business dress but as I said before, I'm trying to move away from AAA batts. except where necessary.

123 batts are required for my weapon mounted lights and offer distinct advantages in that application. their price and form factor makes them less attractive for EDC lights.

I have transitioned over to AA rechargeables in all my EDC/frequent use tools. better power, longer run time and storage life, and supposedly they won't leak like alkaline. my single AA Fenix light is rated at 106 OTF lumens with a single rechargeable AA battery which is plenty and also has a second mode with 15 lumens so you don't blind yourself for map reading. in a pinch, they can be replaced quickly and cheaply with regular alkalines at any stop and rob...

I do still have some need of AAA for specialized uses - earpro and headlamp - but I use eneloops rechargeables in those as well. keeping a few of these on the kit with 123s is no problem.

thanks for the suggestion...

Bringing this back -

I have had my Sunwayman VR10 for about a year now. It has held up fine and I really do not notice it. I like how you can tail stand it.

My only gripe is the magnetic switch. It turns way too easily and has been inconsistent at the lowest power level.

At $60 I would recommend one of these.

Carried the LX2 Lumamax for a long time, downside to it is size and the pocket clip. I have been through multiple pocket clips but surefire doesn't charge for them so no big deal. Size is a little big in my dress pants. Came into a 6px Tactical a while back at a local 3 gun match and I like it but it seems to eat batteries compared the LX2. Great light though and found a place in my active shooter bag for work.

I find myself more and more in a suit these days and began to look for a light similar to the OPs requirements. Decided I wanted the AA compatibility though and ordered the Streamlight ProTac 1AA listed above. Price and size was a big selling feature.

Really didn't know all these other options were out there.

I lost my streamlight stylus awhile back, so I got Terralux Lightstar 80 from Battery Junction for a test run. So far so good, it uses 2 aaa batteries, 80 lumens? Solid construction, fits in two rows of molle where I carry it as backup. Under $20.00, oh yeah I got it in orange!

Me too. EB1. 2 brightness settings. About $150. Short and smooth. Nice clicky and pocket clip. 1 CR123.

I've been told to check out the new Klarus XT2C though. It's $50. There's a review on Chris Frys site. MDTStraining. I should be buying one soon to check out. When I'm not so broke.

I use the http://streamlight.com/en-us/product/product.html?pid=144 Streamlight MicroStream for work and EDC. At $20, my feelings won't hurt if I lose It. I also have a Surefire E1B, but I only carry it when traveling or camping now.

I've been using an ITP brand light for a year now EDC. 2" L x 1/2" dia. Model A3EOS. Three position twist head to activate, low, med and BRIGHT. Uses one AAA battery, mine has been thru two complete wash/dry cycles when I left it in my pants pocket. Works good as new. Pocket clip. Says "aimkon.com" on the head. Got mine at a local show, $20 max.
