Yesterday my brother and I participated in the Great Plains Coyote Calling Contest held in Minco, OK. We placed 3rd out of 33 teams with 3 coyotes. First place had 4 coyotes and second place had 3 coyotes, the tie breaker was total weight.

The day started out slow, we would see some dogs but never had any respond to our calls. Finally at 4:30 in the afternoon, we had two come in. My brother put them both down with his AR15 Performance 18" 6.8 SPC. The first shot was approx. 100 yards, and the second was around 50 yards. Dropped them both, 85 Grain Barnes TSX. After a long day of nothing, a double was just what we needed to keep us going.

We had a few more dry sets and the light was getting low. We had time for two more sets. We called for about 10 minutes and was about to leave when I saw them running in. I was left of the call and my brother was right. The coyotes came in upwind and immediately began trying to circle down wind. The only problem, for them, it was wide open country. I got on the second coyote and my brother, luckily, got on the first coyote. He shot and mine took off. I got on mine and let it fly. I saw her wad up in my scope and knew she was done 110 Grain Hornday V-Max. My brother fired another shot at his but it long gone. Our day was done with 3 coyotes, and we were glad we got them.

Good job, and congrats!

what calls did you use? Did mating season have any effect on your calls or their behavior?
