I picked up a Remington AR cleaning kit from Dunhams last week and I can't seem to get it to fit in the buttstock of my Armalite M15. I leave most of the tools out and it still doesn't work... Am I doing something wrong, is it made for a Colt M16 stock thats slightly bigger, or is it not suppossed to go in there at all?

Heres a pic of the kit.

That pouch is not for the buttstock,it is more of a pack type kit.
This is a buttstock USGI type cleaning kit:

I personally do not like buttstock/weapons mounted cleaning kits as they do nothing IMHO except add weight.Yeah, not much weight, but I tend to try and not complicate my weapons with accoutrements.
Set the kit you have started up with items you use the most and pack it in your gear somewhere, not on the weapon.
But thats my opinion.

That's not designed to be a stock kit. Put that in your range bag.

Some advice: Keep the segmented rod in case you have to punch a stuck case. Use the T-handle and a rod segment for the bore brush. Add a boresnake for the bore, dump the patches and brush. Add a rag and an old toothbrush of some sort. GTG cleaning kit. Get a high quality lube like Slip, EWL, WS. I haven't used it but others are liking the FrogLube. RemOil sucks.

See previous threads on cleaning kits as well. Lots of discussion on different products and their benefits and issues.

I ended up taking it back but I'll order the brownells kit mentioned above. I know rem oil is crap I use CLP now.

I am curious why some on here say that Rem Oil sucks. What makes this bad versus some of the other lubes out there?

I here that it gums up at low temperatures, but I don't like the teflon film that it leaves in your barrel. I want a lubricant that penetrates the pores of the metal, not a layer of film. It also seems to collect more grit and dust than anything else I've ever used especially with .22's. One more thing, it is not a rust inhibitor.

Other lube threads get into it in more detail, but in short: Runs off, burns off, evaps off. Requires reapplication at frequent intervals. Works fine for the bolts and pumps of seasonal hunters. Everyone else needs something else. It isn't tap water, but there's so much better.

If I remember correctly the Rem Oil is approx.40% solvent.Eitherway its a very light viscosity and flashes off extremely fast.Mediocre protectant too.

I personally prefer Weapon Shield CLP/Grease and/or Mil-comm TW25B/MC2500.
Otherwise Slip2000 EWL and Break Free CLP liquid are excellent performers as well.

Good decision.Brownell's kits are much more user detailed.
I cant rmember if that kit comes with the 084-116-362 8-32F/8-36M Adapters or not.But they are available in a 2 pack, allows commercial thread brushes and jags to be used with the USGI sectional rods.

I personally do not like the bore snakes.

For a pull thru type kit I use this:

Is this kit better than any GI kit I can pick up anywhere? Or suggestions for for a quality sectional cleaning rod?

Depends, some of the kits floating around are import quality. The Brownells kits are made in the USA unless otherwise noted.Any they are quality.
When it comes to a sectional rod,its hard to beat the USGI design for the money.Durable and effective, and also double as a chamber rod for using a chamber brush.
As a note I only use the USGI sectional rods/kits for field use. While they are perfectly capable for all uses,I prefer to use a coated Dewey one piece rod at home..

I picked up the Otis cleaning kit as it appears to be fairly decent. USA made as well.
