I have a particular PMAG that has really been a guinea pig for quite a few mods and tweaks..

It started out as a FDE previous gen PMAG, then dremel'ed off a knob, to bring it to current Gen Standards.. Dyed it Red (turned out Maroon) with RID.. Then Dyed it Black.. Then Stipled it, which was great but revealed some of the Red dye.. then took a sharpie to a square take it back to black (looked terrible, don't try) :D

The other day I PlastiDipped my Lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee's faded and peeling "Jeep" and "V8" emblems.. They turned out great!

Today as I was organizing my safe, I saw this step-child of a Pmag (Mind you, it functions perfectly).. And thought... Hey! PlastiDip! :D

So, below is a little write up. It turned out really well... Has a very grippy, slightly rubbery feel to it now.

I had time, so I made a little write-up for any interested.

Disassemble, then tape off the important parts (Floor plate, and IMO the upper portion that enters the mag well).. No need to tape off the Window if you have one... we'll get to that.

I sprayed a somewhat think coat of PlastiDip on one side against a large sheet of cardboard, then held it up and sprayed the other sides.. Then.. Hang it to dry.

After the coating begins to dry, dry enough that it's not running, but not completely dry.. Run something pointed (a toothpick would be perfect) around the outer edges of the window, just to sort of score around the border of the Window.. You won't need to do it some much that the line you leave is obvious.. just a couple times around is good enough.

While it's still a little moist (wet enough that it WOULD leave a finger print if you touched it) remove the tape from both ends... Don't touch the plastidip. Then re-Hang it to dry completely (I used a hanger that I cut and shaped for this purpose.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7040/6789743714_f8b0f632a8.jpg

Once it has completely dried (20 minutes or so, but depends on the thickness you applied), rub the plastiDip from the end of the Window on the PMAG.. it will easily come loose and peel off in one piece. Rinse and repeat for the other side.

Re-Assemble the Pmag.. Load it up.. and you're all set for Grippy PMAG's :) Enjoy!

Looks pretty good, I'm sure this will last quiet a while as well. Do you notice any difference in the diameter of the P-mag (is it a tighter fit into the mag well)?

No diameter change whatsoever in that area, as I taped off the end of the PMAG that inserts into the mag well.

Wow. That's actually the first PMAG mod that I actually really like.

Simple, functional, and easy.

Seeing how easy it peels off the window makes me wonder how durable it will be. How well can this plastidip take a hard scrape?

Considering he did that while it was wet...

I think it should be okay.

depends on how thick its sprayed.

Thanks everyone!

IMO its just the right amount is grip on the PMAG.

how does it perform coming out of a pouch?

How much weight did it add to the mag?

Another similar option to this would be spray on truck bed liner such as this:

It's rough/grippy and made to withstand harsh environments. Back in the day, I painted a set of truck wheels with this stuff and it turned out GREAT!

Sorry, don't know what I was thinking. I seen that you taped it off but it just didn't register...I'll definitely have to give this a try.

a cheaper alternatie to stipling

Plastidip used to be soft and squishy and would melt together if items were touching in summer heat. Has the product been improved to where it's firm now?

For those interested.. I'm going to plastidip and FDE PMAG today then torture test it tonight or tomorrow and post the results. I'm doing an FDE mag for the test so it will be much more obvious where the plastidip has been damaged.

This what I'd like to know. Buddy of mine used the truck bed liner method and it made it too thick to come out of a single mag pouch easily.

Did you test it in a mag pouch yet?

Perfect. It seems like a workable solution, waiting with baited breath to find out how it holds up.Thanks for taking the time.

I use it on some of my hand tools and other stuff and it holds up. Once it starts to peel off then it seems to all bubble. I used the Plastic Dip not spray so there may be a difference. Good job will give it a shot on an old GI mag I have.

From reviews on motorcycling forums, I've heard that once this stuff starts peeling, its best to just peel it all off. It holds well for a while, but as soon as it gets a nice gouge its gone. They were using it on plastic fairings and such.

Should be a great mod while it lasts. I'd like to try some myself.

One of my issues with the Pmag was how they actually pulled from a pouch. Never really had an issue with maintaining a good grip on one. Stippling, while looking cool didn't help the pouch pull issue and I would think this will also make the issue worse. I would be interested in how it holds up. Not sure how well it would do with heat in normal use or in a car trunk in a pouch, or just durability wise either. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for posting this, I have been considering trying this for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I also thought about trying it out on a MOE grip to make it more grippy.

I hope it hold up better then the knife handles ive done before. Even with multiple coatings mine peeled off.. The spray on liner looks promising.:lazy:

I am a big fan of stippling and I am curious if you think this provides more grip than stippling? Do you think if you stippled a mag or rail panel and then sprayed it, it would give much more added grip over just stippling? Is the coating thick enough to "fill in" the stippling?
