I am going to pick up a GI cleaning kit or a sectional rod for range use. I have Dewey's carbon fiber rods for cleaning at home but was looking for something more compact to throw in my range bag. Are GI kits about the same just re-branded? Or any recommendations on a good sectional cleaning rod. I have a Hoppes but it seems kind of flimsy. Anything better?

Do you have to have a rod? Bore snakes are very compact and can't damage anything.

That post kind of spurned this one. Care to go into more detail?

Already carry a Bore-Snake. Was just looking to add a rod.

a section of cleaning rod is a must have for emergencys. i keep a piece just long enough to push a stuck case out of the chamber attached to my rifle. have it posistioned along upper reciever below the flattop picatinny rail and down the side of my quad rail forearm. couple pieces of heavy dity velcro and you forget its even there. use sparingly as the metal rod will destroy your crown over time but i havent found anything better for that purpose than the g.i. style. i also own bore snakes and a dewey rod too.

Can you post of pic of how you use velcro to mount the rods?

i dont even have a pic of it but will try to explain. it is cut off so there is no attachement point for any jags. my forearm is a quad rail midlength and if looking directly at the weapon it is between the 9 oclock and 12 oclock rail on forearm. i have a piece of velcro throught the top of the rail in 2 places wrapped around it and another on at the reciever/forearm junction. not sure if it would be good to go for hard use but have used it when some people on the range shoot lots of (wont say it ) and fail to clean the chamber. stole the idea from a pic i seen on the web and will try to find it.

I have this kit from Kleen Bore in my AR case: http://www.amazon.com/Kleenbore-Digital--AR-15-Cleaning-Attachment/dp/B00162QH9Y/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1330400079&sr=8-4

This John Masen kit was a runner-up for me: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=31870/Product/MIL-SPEC-CLEANING-KIT

https://www.m4carbine.net/picture.php?albumid=485&pictureid=2522 this is the pic that i stole the idea from. just an idea so your mileage may vary. maybe take it and run with it for what its worth but zip ties may be a better option if you are set on it. in the event of needing to use this or a broken shell extractor i would definately go to my secondary untill the situation calms down but for range work its no biggy.

Then why didn't you just post the question in THAT thread, since it's directly related to the subject of the cleaning gear included in that kit?
