I work in a hospital radiology department and this is a serious concern for us. A few years ago, we had to scan a prisoner in our 3T scanner-its magnetic field is twice as strong as the one in the story. One of the plain clothed escorts decided not to tell us or secure her firearm when screened. Upon entering the room, the revolver was pulled out of the holster in her waist band and into the bore (tube). Luckily, we were able to get the weapon out without powering the magnet down (it costs a number of thousands of dollars to quench and restart the magnet). So if you ever have to get a MRI, be sure to remove all metal or let the technologist know what you have that cannot be removed.
