2 dead, including gunman, in Western Psychiatric Hospital shooting

PITTSBURGH -- Several people were shot, including a police officer, inside of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland Thursday afternoon.

Investigators said two people, including the gunman were killed. Seven other people were injured. There is no word their conditions. UPMC officials said all of the victims are being treated at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
UPMC Presbyterian Hospital officials released a statement via Twitter saying, "Injuries have been reported during the incident at WPIC. We have received patients in UPMC Presbyterian Emergency Department. Measures have been put in place to secure the hospital and to keep our patients and staff safe. We are continuing to work with the police."
Officials said after searching the buildling, there was no indication that another gunman was in the building.
Police told Channel 11's Rick Earle that initial reports indicated that a second gunman may have been holding people hostage inside of the hospital. Channel 11 has since learned that police learned those reports were unfounded.
UPMC officials said via Twitter, "Despite various reports and Tweets, we have been told by police that there is no hostage situation at UPMC Presby or Western Psych/WPIC"
A SWAT team is now going floor-by-floor to make sure the situation is completley clear.
Among the injured, according to officials, was a University of Pittsburgh officer who was hit in the leg.
Pittsburgh Police have requested that no family members go into the Oakland area. Affected family members are asked to go to the Petersen Events Center.
Police have also requested that anyone still inside of Western Psychiatric remain in place and SWAT will escort them out of the building as they search the facility.
The entire University of Pittsburgh in Oakland and Pittsburgh Public School's Science and Technology Academy were placed on lockdown. Several other nearby schools and facilities were placed on lockdown as well, but those have since been lifted.
A hotline has been established for those affected. For information on patients, property left at the scene or other concerns call 412-623-7724.
