So on Facebook Colt just posted a picture of a bunch of LE6940P boxes saying they are about to ship out. I believe these are the new hybrid piston rifles that they have been talking about. I still havent found anything that explains what the "hybrid piston" system is. Does anyone know?

Looks like a run of the mill piston system.

Hybrid was used to describe the piston variant of the SCW.

Your right, it is. Colt is referring to it as an articulating link. Isn't it a requirement these days to roll out some marketing whamalama dingdong with your new product?

Let's not forgot Colt built a piston gun back in the 60's.

Looks very similar to the Adams Arms conversion kit.

Can anyone say what the actual difference is when comparing a Adams Arms piston system to the Colt LE6940P piston system?

Actually it's more like every other piston system than Adams Arms or LWRC.

Here's HK's piston system:

PWS piston system:

POF piston system:

You get the picture.

AA piston system:

LWRC piston system:

To summarize, the former uses an articulating piston system. The piston moves back and forth like it does it your car's motor. Then the piston pushes on a rod to strike the BCG.

The latter uses what I would call an op-rod design. The rod articulates by gasses pushing on a cone. Gasses are mostly shot forward instead of into the handguard.

Thanks for the info.

Is any particular piston system better then the other?

Wonder where the Colt vents it's gas residue? I see two holes, one on either side of the gas block. Does it blow out there?

The HK blows excess residue up and forward of the gas block and away from the weapon. The LWRC and AA blows it forward but underneath the rail/handguard so it gets all over that and the gas block/FSB.

colts vents out the sides and down from the gas block, that is what those two holes are.

Venting gas down while in the prone... hmm... super...

Piston actually looks most like the LMT piston. I don't know how it works in comparison, but it looks like it.
