Not sure what subforum this would fall under, so I'll try it here.

My Christmas gift was an AR, and I chose to buy a variety of components and do the assembly myself.

Upper consisting of the following;
Centurion 16" CHF barrel - 1 in 7" w/A2
Centurion 12" C4 rail
Badger low profile gas block - mid length
Vltor MUR-1A receiver
PSA auto BCG
BCM Gunfighter med. charging handle

Lower -
PSA stripped lower.
PSA LPK
Magpul MIAD
Troy ambi mag and bolt release
Ambi selector
Vltor eMod A5 receiver extension and stock.

Add ons -
Troy folding BUIS
Troy PRO sling mount and swivel
BFG VCAS padded sling
Aimpoint PRO
KAC Rail covers
Magpul AFG1
20 & 30rd Pmags
Streamlight TLR1-S

Gear -
Tactical Tailor MAV with triple mag shingle, one tripple mag pouch (loaded out with 2), and the 2 grenade pouches for little things.

I had shot 380 rounds pretty much static (prone/bench) sometime in January, and another 100 or so testing ammo loads. I have only had 2 fail to feeds/borderline double feed on the same string (my first shooting trip), and I am not entirely convinced it was not the mag.

There was a toss up between a private range membership, and the Mike Pannone 2 day advanced carbine class going on in March (as in right now), so guess what won out. AAR started and in progress in the Grey Group training section.

Also new to reloading 5.56, and after some very brief testing, I loaded up 1200 rounds with Hornady 55gr and 23.6gr of AA2230 for the class.

Yesterday was the first day of the class, and the only "malfunction" that I had was me. It does help to rack the bolt on a reload/empty chamber/closed bolt.

The day before the class I pulled and disassembled the BCG, gave it a couple squirts of Gunzilla, assembled, and gave the whole BCG another spray then put it back together.

Range conditions is pretty much the consistency of road base. Pea gravel and fine powdery dirt.

Halfway through the class, my black rifle began to acquire it's own custom camouflage coating of dust from the first 3 hours of mixed drills with drop to prone shooting.

Towards the end of the day we did some reload drills consisting of 10 - 1 round mags. Fire, reload, repeat (I ran this 5 times) with all the mags landing in the flour that became my shooting area. Three of the reloads were from kneeling and grabbing the mags off the ground. Not one single mag failed to drop free of the PSA lower, and only one Pmag started getting bitchy about getting loaded (wonder where that dirt came from?). Other than a couple taps on my knee after the round was placed, that is about all the cleaning the mag got before being stuck back in.

Having never taken a class before, let alone set up an AR for operational use, I did not locktite a damn thing on it in case I was instructed to rearrange or relocate something. The only thing that came loose was my rear BUIS, which is getting loctited this morning (along with everything else).

In total I am about 1200 rounds into my rifle with the last cleaning at 380. Today before the second day of the class, she is going to get a quick wipe down in the magwell and chamber, the BCG is going to get a wipe down and fresh lube.

Given that the primary operational components of the gun is PSA, whose quality and reliability has been in question of late. Mine has done very well I think. I will try to pay attention and see how the trigger feels today (any creep).

Later on this week, I will do the complete cleaning and take some pics of any wear areas, along with an assessment of component fitting. I know that when it was brandy new and shiny, the upper mated to the lower piss perfect with no slop.

OK, I got some pics Sunday morning while getting ready for the second day of class.

No grief about the date. My damn camera resets itself after 1 week of not being used. I think I'll just turn it off.

Yes, I know my ambi bolt release is working itself off. Yes it did eventually drop free during class and I am lucky I found both pieces. The one thing I forgot to locktite that morning.

The second day of class, all manner of crap got introduced into the chamber during the malfunction create and clear drills. Dirt, gunpowder (yes, I had 1 round that shot the bullet into the case and when I went to re-use it, dumped about half the powder into the chamber). Still went bang after I cleared the charging handle impingement. In fact, the rifle went bang every single time both days.

Yes, I know. I have a whopping 900 rounds through it with these pictures. "Get back to us when you hit 5k newbie". Now I am at 1700. I'll post more pics next weekend when I get to cleaning it. I am interested to see how my BCM charging handle held up after 60 odd bolt overrides and impingement. I had one that another shooter set up for me that was a wrap around. The head of the case was above the bolt, and the nose was behind the next round that started well into the chamber and was heading down into the magazine. Almost had to mortar it to clear it. Bent both cases into an arc.

Excellent post. You are learning.

Looks like your extension is not screwed in far enough. Your buffer should not be holding down the retainer detent and spring, check that.

Get a plastic/wire brush cleaner for car tire rims. You can use it to clean out your mags. Sand sucks.

Get your self a spare parts kit, extra BCG, extra CH, etc. don't forget springs.

Keep reloading, crimp your brass.

Thank you.

I will double check the extension this weekend. I screwed the receiver when I assembled it until the tube crossed over the retainer to the point where it would bind it up, then backed off 1/4 turn (might have been less).

A complete BCG is on my list for spares, along with an extractor rebuild, maybe some gas rings. I have the OEM Vltor charging handle as a spare, and each and every allen wrench for my rifle in a ziplock.

Hey! Read the second line of my second post.

FWIW - It's 2012 and we are still using 1911's

Very nice job Sticks. It looks like you really did your homework instead of just slapping together a bunch of cheap parts, or buying a lower grade rifle. Best of all, you're out shooting it and getting training. Kudos to you.
