I am currently in the hunt for a quality carry knife. Any recomendations? Emerson, Benchmade etc?

I have a few Emersons and have been very happy with them. I have also had good luck with Benchmade. Strider seems to be a favorite with the hard-use crowd. The new Zero Tolerance offerings are very intriguing as well.

Please elaborate on your requirements, so that others might be better equipped to advise you.

3.5"-4.1" blade, fast blade deployment. I have looked at the ZT knives but they are a little out of my price range for a EDC and arent they an auto knife? Not legal in this state. I wanted to buy a SOCFk but the Extreme outfitters didnt have the Type B serrated anymore.

I have been very pleased with my Emerson SOCFK "A" plain edge.

If you really want a "Sock" knife, collectors on the Usual Suspects Network sometimes have them for sale/trade.

My EDC is a Bladetech Tim Wegner Pro-Hunter. Going on 2 years now, I've used it for pretty much everything including some light prying and digging. Has held up great. I highly reccomend it.

I ordered a pair of Strider/Buck 882BKX's from the Buck website for $40.00 each with free shipping. They are on sale, Buck's normal MSRP is $154.00 each.

Benchmade 2550 Mini Reflex for me.

Same here. I have the serrated version. I've had it for probably a year now, and it's used daily, love it.

My edc knife for years has been one of 2 Benchmade AFCK 800S. My first one was an early one with smother g10 scales and the hardware scrwed directly into the g-10. After a couple years of carry the screws stripped out. That one is at Benchmade now geting upgraded to the newer style with the screws meeting small metal "nuts"on the oppisite side. Benchmades customer service is great they are upgradeing it for only $5 return shipping. I have to say I could not pass up that deal at Buck knives for the 882 for $40 shipped.

I go back and forth between a CRKT M16-10K and a CRKT M16-13T. Both nice knives and easy to open and carry.

I switch between a SOG Pentagon and Cold Steel Voyager I carry in case I have to peel a dog off of me...the only reason I carry a knife. I really like the SOG they both open with a flick of the wrist. I know these aren't the hi-end knives like Ernie Emerson makes but they can hold an edge.
I was at a gun show a while back and actually got to hold a Microtech HALOII , it made me cry, I wanted that knife so so bad I thought about running away with it. But the thought of 75 gun dealers chasing me didn't appeal so I gave it back, but it was without a doubt the finest knife I have ever seen. He also had a couple of MOD's which impressed me til I noticed the HALOII !!

I carry a Benchmade Presidio Pardue 520SBK. I love this knife, it's been a constant companion through 3 years of abuse. It's not an auto openener, but I have become pretty quick opening the blade with the thumb studs. (It gives me something to play with when I'm bored.) These are a little pricey running around $180, but are very high quality.

Those of you living in Northern Virginia, Quantico Arms has an "in store" sale giving 25% off on Benchmades.

For several years I carried an Emersons and Benchmade knives. They all worked well for me.

Now I carry a Strider SMF-Ranger green, everywhere! Couldn't be happier.
(It was noticed, along with my SF E2, at a wedding last weekend. I was asked if I really needed such a big knife for a wedding? I replied it was the best I could do considering I couldn't carry a gun that night!)

Another vote for Kershaw Leek. VERY quick opening seems to hold an edge well and inexpensive...I have a tendancy to either damage or loose knives so my $200 Mel Pardue auto, or CQC7 generally stay at home....

I've been carrying a Benchmade CQC7 since 97. I've carried others off and on over the years but I always come back around to the CQC, really like the way it feels in my pocket and the blade has held up to everything I've thrown at it. Also, it has sentimental value :)

My next purchase is going to be a Gerber Armor. G10 grips, 440 serrated tanto, and a Carson flipper. I got to check one out the other day, and I look forward to seeing how well it holds up.

(I abuse my knives to the extent that I don't like the idea of purchasing a knife over $100 for EDC.)

I really like this knife. It has a strong axis lock and holds an edge well with the Aus 8 steel.

My beater knife though is the CRKT Desert Cruiser.

Here is my daily carry knife. My second one. I lost my first one half way through my last Iraq deployment so I had to buy a new one. I realy love this knife, probably because it is good quality and a good price.

I usually switch between a CRKT M16-13Z,M-21-14 or a Ryan model 7 depending on the type of pants or shorts I'm wearing that day. All hold an edge real well and if I did lose one it wouldn't be a financial loss to replace one.

Cold Steel Recon 1. Can't beat it for the money for toughness and durablity, plus it's very easy to open or close with one hand.

I have several folders I carry but my two favorite ones for EDC are my Emerson HD7 and my Spyderco Manix.

The HD is one fast deploying folder that works well for self-defense and not so well as a general purpose utility knife. The HD7 is frame lock version of the CQC-7.

http://www.huntingpictures.net/data/560/95P2230024_Medium_.JPG

The Spyderco Manix is one stout, heavy duty folder. It was my top choice when I started looking for a really good hard use folder for everything else that the Emerson couldn't do well. The Manix will also hold it's own for self defense purposes.

http://www.huntingpictures.net/data/560/95DSC00442_Large_.JPG

IMHO, the Manix is one of the most underrated folders available. It's blade is made with excellent steel(CPM-S30V) and uses an almost indestructible lock. It can easily hang with knives costing many times as much.

We are issued Benchmade autos... I have broken soooooo many of them :p

One knife that I picked up and realy like is the Spyderco Native (the first gen of them was not that great however). Nice size, good shape, blade is primarily a fighter style, but does well as a utility blade and they are cheap -- so when you break or lose it, it does not hurt as much.

I think they come in under 40 bucks... if they still make them?

There have been many great recommendations in this thread. I prefer Strider and Emerson knives based on their durability and the way the companies treat their customers.

I also carry a Blade-Tech Pro Hunter on occassion. Right now I have a Strider NM SnG in my pocket.

The Zero Tolerance 0301 is one of my favorites as well.

If you're on a budget a waved Spyderco Endura may be a winner.

Spyderco still manufactures the Native. They have the S30V blade steel version at Wally World for $39.00 (made in the USA too). Probably the best bang for your knife buck right now.

Carry for what? Self defense? Opening boxes? Do you know how to fight with a knife? What style knife do you train with?

I just traded for a Gerber Applegate Combat Folder.
I have wanted this knife for years but the thought
of spending over $100 on a knife has never appealed to me. Like OLDS442
I have avoided doing this but after fondling this knife @home
I realize I would have or should have bought one a long time back
it is worth every cent. Again, not the high end folder/auto
I would like , but we all know what Mick sez about getting what you want and getting what you need ... my 2cents

is a Strider SMF Gen 2. It is big enough for work and built like a tank. I also have a Spyderco Mannix that I rotate in (same size as my SMF). My no. 2 is often a Benchmade 520. I don't like small knives but I understand that some states have issues with blade lengths. That being the case, consider a Benchmade Griptilian. If I'm sporting shorts and I need something discreet I'll clip mine on. I prefer S30V, 154CM and Benchmade's 440 for blade steels. Using a Spyderco Triangle Sharpener, the blades come up scarey sharp and hold their edge very well in comparison to some other steels I've sharpened.

My EDC was an Emerson CQC7 since '94. It went w/ me everywhere and held up to all the abuse a knuckle-dragger like me threw at it.
Then one ugly day it got hung up on the waist cord of a polar-fleece jacket and I lost it!......at a Food Lion grocery store no less!
I found an exact duplicate on an exchange website a month later.

Fast forward to a few days ago; I found an incredible deal on a Stider AR w/ grooved scales. WOW, talk about built like a tank! Whoever thought I'd put away a Benchmade/Emerseron original?
I couldn't be happier with either!

My Emerson CQC-7 Wave sees very little action now. As well as my Benchmade CQC-7 the two rarely get out. Don't get me wrong, they're both good knives but after carrying the Strider SMF and the Spyderco Mannix, they feel too small. And just the "snap" of the Strider when opening, is music to my ears. The titanium slab on one side with the G10 on the other produces a really cool sound unlike any other knife I've owned. Yeah, yeah I know -- it's just a knife but like the Jeep saying goes, "It's a Strider thing. You wouldn't understand.":D

I just acquired a Strider PT (SMF's little brother). Much easier on the trousers than my AR.;) Good thing it has a 3" blade. We are headed to Chcago to see King Tut and 3" is max legal length in The Windy City.

My everyday carry knife is a Hideaway Claw worn on my belt next to the buckle. IMO, the beauty of this system is that I can get it in either my strong or weak hand with zero fumbling even if I am right in the middle of a tussle. I will "back it up" with an Al Mar Eagle for light utility work.

If I am gunless, which is almost never, I add a Bud Nealy Pesh Kabz in the same place I usually carry my Glock 19.

I carry a TiStrider Hybrid HAK in conjunction with a custom or NSN SMF from Strider pretty much everywhere. THe Ti HAK is on me from the second I wake up to the time I go to bed, and even then it is hanging on the bed post.
