When would the use of grease be needed on an m4? Where would you put the grease?

Is the grease better than or just different than regular liqued lube

Depends on the weight.

The only grease that I've heard of that comes universally recommended is MilComm TW-25B. Apply on bolt, carrier, and FCG bearing surfaces.

Another one I've occasionallys een mentioned is something like MDF-7 or MF-7, soemthing like that.

I've used the TW25-B and it works fine (50-90 deg F). Never used it in the cold but it's supposed to work OK at low temps.

Mad Dog Labs XF-7.

Read up on it here from a review from Smith Enterprises:

Here's the Safety Data Sheet: http://www.smithenterprise.com/spec/XF7-MSDS.pdf

As you can see this stuff has been tested in the real world. And from a Civi side, I can't recommend it enough.

I've used this for about 3 years now, and started using it exclusively on my current MRP carbine from day #1, and it now has ~6800 rounds on it without fail. My application is to use the XF-7 on the bare metal FCG, Bolt, BCG, and then apply LaRue Machine Gunners Lube over the top of it.

This application keeps ALL carbon from building up (wipes right off even inside the BCG, and rear of bolt) which tells me it's not "Burning Off" even after some very intense training sessions. I merely apply some Machine Gunners lube to the bolt through the bolt gas ports every 200 rounds or so and keep shooting. When I get home to clean, again, all carbon wipes off.

One other thing worth mentioning...since using this from day #1 on the Bolt, and Lugs, I have monitored the progressive "Wear" of these bearing surfaces. After ~6800 rounds, the bolt still does no close on a "Field Gauge", and has a long ways to go before it does. That tells me that my bolt and lugs are not getting worn out prematurely, and hence...something must be right about my lube process, and products. I'd venture to say the Bolt will crack before the lugs and bolt wear out. I hope not anyway because I'd love to see just how far I can go on this bolt/ barrel combo before having to replace it due to wear.
