Guy I know claims his father has an AR chambered in 6.45. I have never heard of this caliber, but he claims it is used by a Texas Sheriff's SWAT sniper team.
He's looking for ammo for it.
I asked if he meant 6.8 or 6.5, or possibly 6x45, but he stated that what he was told (via text/email) was "6 point 45".

Anyway, anybody have any ideas?

My google fu is weak, but I have sucessfully found references to that caliber.

The Swiss experimented with at least two cartridges in the late 1970s before adopting the 5.56mm NATO; the 5.6x48 Eiger and 6.45x48 GP 80. The 5.6mm fired a 3.7g bullet at 1,050 m/s for 2,040J (considerably more than the 5.56mm NATO) while the 6.45mm managing to propel its 6.3g bullet at 900 m/s for 2,550J. Both rounds were based on the 12mm-wide 7.62x51 NATO case and were therefore considerably larger than most other intermediate rounds. With the benefit of hindsight, a heavier bullet at a more moderate velocity might have provided a better general-purpose loading for the 6.45mm.

Sounds odd that a SWAT team would use such an obscure round for snipers, when there are so many more common rounds to use, that are probably cheaper to use. If it was a text or email, maybe he better see is if some fat fingered a button on the other end, and meant 5.45 or just 6.5.
My google fu is not turning up any thing about 6.45 and Texas swat snipers. Mostly 308 and 5.56 is used by swat, of course the internet has been wrong before.

I seriously doubt it. Even if 6.45 is correct, that's just a caliber not a specific cartridge...have him ask again for exactly what the name of the cartridge is. 6x45 spell checker auto-correct or fat finger typo maybe.......

is it not just a 5.56 necked up to 6mm?

Had a guy at a gunshow mention he had a ".308 Weatherby Magnum". I opined; "You mean a three HUNDRED Weatherby"?

He stated; "NO! A three oh eight...I had it made special".

Same guy possibly??:D

Reminds me of a childhood friend whom I told I had a 300 Magnum. Not to be outdone he told me he had a 300 Savage.

6mm is of course .243 and 6.5mm is .264 with a couple of exceptions like 6.5X52Rmm which is the European designation for the 25-35 WCF, a .257 bore cartridge. I have never heard of a 6.45mm bore. 6X45mm is a well known wildcat AKA 6mm-223 Remington.

This is about the closest I have been able to point a finger to:

That's why I asked the question.
I can google, but there is so little about it I am highly doubting the accuracy of the statement, and I was hoping that someone might be able to shed some light on this minor and personal quest.

Not as uncommon as you might think, its a 223 case necked up to take a .243 bullet. most times I have seen it listed as 6mmx45. but I have also seen it listed as 6.45.

Pretty decent ballisticaly, but you cant use the real long heavy weight bullets without single feeding them in an AR platform due to OAL restrictions with the mags.

I have seen a few of these used for deer hunting. And its a handloader only round. I have never seen any factory ammo listed for it.

I did an article on the 6X45 caliber in the Feb. 2012 issue of SWAT Magazine.... available for download on their site: https://www.swatmag.com/issues/view/february_2012_colt_new_agent_review

I heard some Vietnam stories from Artillery officers who heard of a mysterous round as such.

Haven't read it yet but am going to right now. Quite interested myself as I've heard a few stories like said above. Maybe it was bs, or maybe it was some handmade ordeal. Either way, very interesting.

Thanks for posting the link. Going to check it out right now.
