If you were going to buy a new rifle, and your budget was between $1,100.00 and $1,400.00, and you can't wait for something new coming out, what would you buy? Let's keep it to semi-automatics.

Extra credit for keeping the cost down, but don't skimp just to buy more ammo.

I just bought a Noveske N4 and couldn't be happier. The Basic should be right in your price range, especially if you qualify for LEO or military discounts.

I'd put it at least equal to the Colt and likely superior due to the quality of the barrel.

How much is the military discount for the N4 Basic?


If John Noveske wanted the LEO/ MIL price made public, he would post it on his website. Its probably a question better left for calling John, or asking via PM. I appreciate John taking care of those of us who are LE/MIL, and I would hate to see his hospitality trampled.

Just my thoughts on it, hopefully they make a little sense.




Back to the question at hand, I would go with the Noveske carbine without hesitation.

I would put the N4 ahead of the S&W M&P. I have shot both. The N4 is right at your price limit though. It does come with sights and has an H buffer. It is a carbine-length gas system like the M&P.

If you opt for the Noveske I highly recommend you upgrade to the Emod stock. It's only a few dollars more and IMHO much nicer than the standard Modstock.

I've never ordered from Noveske, but I would expect the LEO/Mil discount would be 5%, maybe 10% if you're lucky.

I don't have a light carbine, but I do have another rifle from Noveske and it is absolutely top notch. If you are LE/MIL John will give you a discount. It isn't huge but every bit helps.

Another consideration is that if anything ever goes wrong with the rifle (unlikely) John will back up his product 100%

Over the holidays, I went through JTAC, which had a sale going, and got an LMT upper and lower. I paid 315 for the lower and 575 for the upper (which included the bolt). Then I bought a Larue BUIS for ~90. The whole system was slightly less than 1,000. I feel like I got a helluva deal. It's a beautiful rifle; absolute top quality. I plan to eventually put on a VLTOR emod stock (~125), and possibly a MIAD grip (~50) after I've shot the rifle for a while. JTAC was great to deal with. I will definitely give them my business again.

$936.00 out the door...I just got it tonight and only had 24 rounds of 5.56 on hand, so all I can say is its very accurate. I'm going to put at least 500 rounds through it tomorrow...I'll let you know how it works out.


BTW, nice to meet you guys...I found a lot of useful info here. I was referred here by a guy who calls himself HP12C over at 1911forum.com, I don't know what his handle is here though.

UPDATE: It ran like a champ...never missed a beat in 800 rounds. My son and I popped 21 crows out of about 40 tries at 300 yards today. Its an easy rifle to shoot accurately...even offhand, but I guess thats a blanket statement that is true of most quality AR's.

My son shot 3 more crows than I did...but he's a little more practiced than I am, I been shooting my 1911 for several months now, today was the first time I've pulled the trigger on a rifle since September ( far too long ), he's on the ROTC shooting team and is more accustomed to peep sights.

I just put together a Noveske N4 lower and an LMT upper and Troy rear sight for around $850. I was in the right place at the right time and I had an unused Colt bolt and BCG to throw in it.

I was in Grant's store yesterday, and if your looking for one of the nicest keep it simple AR's. I think you owe it to yourself to look at the ADS.... Grant upgrades the BCG and it has the nicest Robar finish on it, almost looks to good to be true. and for what somewhere around 850.00.. that will leave you somewhere around 300 to 600 to buy goodies for it.. Just an opinion..
