View Full Version : Does S&W M&P 40 have same issues the M&P 9's have?

I have been looking to get a full sized pistol. I HATE Glock! But I do like the way the M&P feels in the hand. I am looking to get one in .40 but wonder if anyone has had the fail to eject or accuracy issues the M&P 9's seem to be having?

Thanks for any input!

First, keep in mind that not ALL M&P 9mm's have accuracy issues. I am also unaware of what Failure to Eject problem you are referring to.

The most accurate M&P made are the 45's. Second most accurate are the 40's and then the 9mm's.

With that said, if you want a 9mm, then go with one of these. There will be after market (fitted) barrels available in the next 1-2 months. So if you get one that is not accurate enough, you will have options.

every m&p 9 i've shot has been a tack driver.

a buddy of mine did have one that hit low, and smith fixed it and had it back to him in about a week.

given their customer service i wouldn't be too nervous buying an M&P

Concur with what C4IGrant stated above--the M&P45 is very accurate; the M&P40 is the best .40 cal duty pistol I have yet used--no problems with them. The M&P9 generally works well, but some samples have exhibited accuracy issues beyond 15 yds.

I had read (here or S&W forum) that some of the M&P 9's had ejection problems with Winchester White Box ammo.

I had planned on getting a .40 anyway. I just wanted to make sure there were no known major issues with them. (Other than stiff stock triggers, I will fix that with Apex trigger group.) This pistol will be primarily a range and competition gun.

I had also read somewhere that the M&P was first designed as a .40 then the 9mm. Instead of a 9mm beefed up to be a .40. Is this true?

Concur with what others have stated. I have had no issues with the M&P45 or the 40 as far as accuracy goes, but the edge goes to the 45. My 9 have had some issues with accuracy due to the sights, which have been trial and error for me, but the latest set have been the most accurate. That said, I cant wait for Randy and Apex, to come out with the Bar-Sto barrels though. The 9c has been as GTG as the 45 and the 40.

I think what you're referring to is a failure to extract. I personally experienced this with a few problematic guns. However, S&W has apparently changed extractors some time back and its not that common a problem anymore. It used to be a big deal with WWB, though my problem guns would do it with just about anything.
Hence the Apex Fail Resistant Extractor.

The last 3 M&P9s I've used (more recent manufacture) haven't had that problem.

My M&P 9 FS had 13 malfunctions in less than 50 rounds my first time firing it (a mixture of light primer strikes and failures-to-feed). S&W had to replace the barrel and striker assembly.

Ran 100 percent fine afterward but I could never get over how bad it was out of the box. Sold it and bought a PPQ in 9mm.

I have PPQ'S in 9mm and .40. They are great pistols.

If you fired 1,000 rounds of the WWB, you might have 2 failures to extract. If that really bothers you, get the Apex extractor.

Correct. Glock's were designed the 9mm and the M&P is designed around the 40.

The only "accuracy" issues I've had were with frangible training ammo. But that stuff is like 115-130 grain or so and it's just really low in comparison to ball/JHP in the 160-180 flavor of the day.

Outside of that my M&P40 has been accurate and reliable enough for me to qualify, carry and ccw.

My only GUESS on the .357 sig would be price of ammo and availability of the ammo.
The few boxes i've seen around my area we're OVER $20 a bx of 50.

As far as The M&P9c, I have an early model and had ZERO "issues" with it and it's accuracy is spot on.
Shoots so nice my buddy traded his Sig P250 for a M&P after shooting mine a few times.
BUT when i bought it, it suffered from the early models gritty trigger and apex wasn't on scene yet so i sent it off
to Dan Burwell for his trigger job and got it back smooth as fine silk.

I thought about a full sized .40 awhile back then also getting the Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel,
few full sized .40 and 9mm mags to enjoy the best of both worlds.... but i got bit by the Black Rifle Disease. ;)

Grant pretty much summed it up. It has been my experience that .357sig barely sells just enough to stay alive but not enough to be successful. YMMV

The only issue that I've had with one of my M&P's is from my compact .40, I noticed that after about 400 rounds the magazine release became some timey, sometimes it would engage properly, and other times I would have to smack the magazine bottom 3 0r 4 times before it would engage. I contacted S&W, when I talked to the rep and told him my issue, he asked me if I wanted him to send me a self addressed shipping label to return the gun, I told him no, and that I could swap out the mag release myself, he sent me the revised magazine release at no charge.;)

Hey man. I did a lot of research on the M&P's as well. In the end, I ended up getting the 40FS. The main reason being that I can purchase a factory 9mm barrel or .357 and drop it in and shoot cheaper, less recoiling ammo. Versatility =]

I do like 45's, but I wanted a pistol my wife could handle as well. I'll be purchasing the 9mm barrel for her. Although she can handle the .40.

I just took it to the range for the first time, put 200 rounds through it (Winchester white box, Winchester PDX1, CORBON DPX, and the ranges reloads) and did not have one issue whatsoever. Im very pleased and I think you will be too.

I love the way the M&P feels in the hand; a main reason why I think a lot of people purchase m&p.

Good luck and I hope I helped ya out.

My M&P40 runs perfectly, 105% reliable. No stoppages or failures of any kind and it's fired over 3000 rounds since I bought it at Christmas.

I have owned all M&P pistol calibers in the full-size frame. A sample of one perhaps, but I have had zero issues.

I just finished a two-day class with 400 plus rounds of 9mm without a hitch.

This one is my present duty weapon and worked when it really needed to.

Not to derail this whole thread but do the 9 compacts suffer from the accuracy issues that their big brothers have? I don't generally shoot my 9c past 7-10 yds. Should I be shooting a pistol to 25 yds in a self defense situation?

If one visits the S&W web site, they list 357 M&Ps as still available, though at a significant price premium - $727 versus $569 for the .40 version

I heard it's in limited production, hence the higher price.

Last full scale production was a couple of years ago, when the North Carolina Highway Patrol adopted it (S&W M&P-357) as their standard issue sidearm.

Hell at that price you can get .40 then the barrel from midway for $80 and 3 more Mags for the same price.

CDNN has the .357 sigs for $400. At least their catalog has been showing them for months. I think they only wanted an extra $25 for night sights.
