I know I will catch a lot of flac over this post, but I have a Colt LE6920 that I removed the stock carry handle with a sight like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AR-DETACHABLE-REAR-SIGHT?item=160698335681&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7542392353472751626 I bought this with the thought of adding a red dot type sight set up so that I can use the irons in conjunction as co-witness to the red dot. What I am wondering is what red dot and mount I will need to do this. I am a disabled vet and on a very fixed income so it has to be relatively inexpensive. In the meantime I have a 3x9 scope to aid these ailing 60 year old eyes but do not like it as it interferes with the charging handle due to eye relief issues, and I really like the idea of a red dot or holographic type sight to use with the irons. The rear sight as you can see looks exactly like a chopped carry handle and it has the stock front sight. I bought the rear sight because I didn't want to chop up a relatively expensive carry handle. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Look in the Equipment Exchange forum under optics. I personally would look for a used Aimpoint optic in the $400 price range.

Again, I would save up the extra cash and go with an aimpoint, but if you really want something inexspensive look at this:

Best bet is a new Aimpoint PRO for $400 with a mount.

If that's not in the budget, the lower priced options that I've found to be OK are:

Ultradot 30 - popular in competition circles but for some reason nonexistent in tactical circles, I find its dot quality to be better than any of my Aimpoints (including PRO and ML3), although the coatings are not all that anti-reflective. $170 for the sight which comes with awful rings, add $60 or so for Warne AR15 height 30mm QD rings. These are made in Japan, and in bullseye competition and some hunting circles have a great reputation. I've been using one on a 2-gun carbine.

Vortex Strikefire - $150 with a (made in China) mount, works fine, get good reviews, great warranty, probably the best value

Lucid HD7 - $200-250, huge and heavy, made in China, but excellent optical quality. I had one but sold it because the adjustments were heavy and didn't track well, and the huge housing creates a tunnel effect.

Be sure that any red dot will work for you before buying - many people with aging eyes find that conventional magnifying scopes just work better for them. There are decent 2-7x scopes below $200 and decent 1-4x scopes around $300 (Burris FF TAC30).

I've had good luck with these so long as you're not buying it for hard use.

I know this is the internet but I'm going to take your word that you're a disabled vet on a limited income. I'm a couple of years younger than you so lucky for me my draft card didn't get called before Nixon ended the Vietnam war.
I rummaged around through my parts and found one of these that I don't use anymore.

I flipped it around in the mount and it works on an ar, if I remember it even cowitnesses.
PM me your address and I'll send it to you free, it's just taking up space here. I checked it out and it works, still has battery life. Even if it doesn't work for you at least you'll get a feel of having a red dot on your rifle.

Primary Arms Micro with ADM mount is very hard to beat when it comes to anything other than Aimpoint and Eotechs. They are inexpensive and reliable and the ADM mount will have the dot at the proper height for lower 1/3 co witness.

The Bushnell TRS 25 can be had for less than $80 on sale. Held up well on my Saiga 7.62x39.
