View Full Version : 1st choice Colt 6920 - is the Spikes STR5025 a good 2nd choice?

Newbie here looking for my first AR. After pouring over reviews and sifting thru the "here's what I have" posts, the Colt 6920 is at the very top of my list. I would think they're a very reputable company and the 6920 is the exact "look" that I want.

Although a bit hard to find without paying a few more dollars than normal for the Colt, the Spikes STR 5025 M4S seems to be a suitable 2nd choice - yeah or nay? Thanks.

So what are you asking? Do you know how many of these threads we have had?

If you are counting pennies in the difference between the Colt (under 1000.00 still) or the Spikes' then you need to get something else all together. I would take a Colt any day of the week over Spike's.

Hold out for the 6920 man!

Saw one at Wal-Mart for $1,097 a few days ago...

If the Spike's would have been at $799 where they used to be, I'd say if you want a rifle now and are a hobbiest, go for it.

But at the current price point of $865, you're nearly at Colt/DD/LMT/BCM territory.
Pass.

My 1st and only AR so far is a 6920. You would be making a very wise decision buying one. I'm betting if you dug around here enough your decision on one would most likely be set in stone.

If you want to buy something just to have a gun that looks cool, then buy whatever you think looks cool.

If you want a serious rifle -- start with a Colt, BCM, DD, or LMT.

the Colt (under 1000.00 still)

The 6920?
Is it really? I haven't seen one that cheap. New, at least.

The 6920 and Spikes shouldn't even be mentioned in the same thread. Shame on you. :(

$995. Really? I know you blew the $1,000 out of the water, but at the very least you're not considering your ~$40 FFL transfer fee.

$40 for a transfer? Do they at least buy you a drink first? :D Most I have ever paid was $20.

Another thing, Colt doesn't have any silly spider logos on it.

Indeed. Eastern PA is proving to be more expensive at the LGS. There is another place near me that is $25, but it's a 30 minute drive. Time and gas offset. My FFL is a football throw from my front door.

$40 is a high transfer fee. Shop around. Try pawn shops with FFL's. They are generally trying to get you into their stores and will use low transfer fees to do it.

We actually have 6920's in stock: http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=6920

Bought LMT as my first AR after sifting though all the info.

Does everyone recommend what is the best or what they own? If you only owned Fords, how do you know Chevys aren't just as good or better?

I will take a $40 xfer fee anyday over the regional average of $50-$120 here in this part of CA.

Seriously, $50 is the cheapest I know of around here...

That is Peoples Republic of California for you. FFL charges are way too high.

Colt or BCM. The best bang for the bucks in the long run.

Seriously, $50 is the cheapest I know of around here... I try to say as far away from the local gun shops I can except for B2 in Rohnert Park Calif. Great people, great prices. The local gun shops around here advertise keep your money local and I tell them I would rather keep my money in my wallet.

I just got mine from DSG for just over $1k total.

Rifle $995 + $12 S/H + $20 transfer = $1027

The downside is I waited 73 days between order and picking it up. Also the day I got my invoice I checked the website and they where still listed as out of stock. So to get at that price you are probably going to have to put in a back order.

DSG was a pleasure to work with.

Good things come to those who wait.

My second choice, would be a 6721.

Or a BCM.

Colt 6720, then 6920, then BCM 16" LW Middy, then DD V5 Middy. LMT Defender would be up there too.

So many fantastic options within that cost range that are better.

With the current real world pricing, it's tough to not go with the Colt 6920.

My second choice would be the Colt 6720.

BCM, Daniel Defense and LMT are also good guns in my opinion. But with current availability and pricing, Colt is my recommendation.

You would be hard pressed to beat the value of the successor to the LE, (or it's return) the SP6920 MOE with Magpul accessories. Ever since Colt bought out Armalite's military contracts they've been supplying AR's to our armed forces and the 6920 is the closest you're gonna get to one without enlisting! :) But hey, although I love my Colts, I enjoy my Bushmasters and M&P, so don't feel as if you're not in some special club if you don't get the Colt. Just get an AR and enjoy yourself. BTW- just picked up a Bushmaster Carbon 15 for $619! and I have to say I love all FIVE pounds of it. You got choices man.

The main issue I have with the 6920 - and Colt's offerings in general - is that they're behind the times when it comes to modern ergonomic offerings. The MOE edition 6920s are a good start, but it'd be nice to see a true midlength factory Colt with Magpul middie handguards, or a 13" rail on that recent run of LT6720s they did with the Troy TRX handguards.

Granted, you can always buy the base 6920 and chop the FSB or add a low-pro gas block and run whatever freefloat rail you desire later.

Either way, if you buy the 6920 you'll be getting rock-solid internals. As others have mentioned, Daniel Defense, BCM, LMT or Noveske offerings are often the better off-the-shelf buy for features, but if you can't get them on the open market, they may as well not exist.

Well...was planning on getting a little practice time in at Ben Avery, but if you are in fact living here you know it's kind of like being in Guadalcanal (minus the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere boys of course). Thinking about Alaska next.

Yup can't go wrong with a colt 6920. I just picked mine up a LGS for 1090 out the door with all the MOE stuff on it. It's been about a month and I've already started changing things here and there

No difference other than the rollmark.
