I'm looking into building a hybrid 308 carbine. Right now I'm fishing around for lowers. Anyone know anything about these guys?

handy little tool in the top of the page called "search." There is a wealth of info on this site about CMMG if you look for it.

Yeah, I assembled one of their 5.56/.223 lowers. The lower is finished VERY nicely. The lower kit was kind of cheap and the hammer pin doesn't sit flush with my receiver, but I have been happy with it. It works well, and mated perfectly with my upper.

I think it stands for Central Missouri Machine Guns. Folks here will tell you they're a piece of s%$t, they're a middle of the road (read decent) budget oriented brand. They specialise in .22 conversions, which are popular. They also sell some ridiculous thing called tactical bacon. It tastes good. Bought a can as a gag.

I have no experience with their .308 lower, but I have seen a few in person at the shop, they look real handsome. Very clean machining, with no forge flash any where. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

Cheers for that. I'm new to the site. Your guidance is appreciated.

Like I said, right now I'm playing w/options for a 16" in 308. I thought about just getting a NIB Bushmaster but I'm now thinking something a little higher end... w/out breaking the bank, of course.

How much are you willing to spend? What is the purpose of the rifle?

Welcome to the site. Please take a moment to use the search engine. There are two options to use regarding the search engine. Option A is to use the orange "search" button (near the top right corner of every page), which uses Google to search the site.

Option B is to click on "search" in the black bar the runs across the top of the screen. This search engine uses the forum software's search engine. It has a reputation of being a little less than helpful, but it does allow you to limit your search to certain areas of the website, which can be quite useful.

As far as CMMG, they have a less than stellar reputation here. An AR-10 style rifle, if built well, isn't going to be cheap. The motto of many folks here is "buy once, cry once". I'd look at LMT or KAC if I was considering a 7.62 NATO platform, but that's just me.

This. Your purchase depends upon what your usage will be. Is it going to be a plinker? Home defense? I am no expert at all. I'm relatively new here, but just keep reading these forums. I have learned an ass load skimming through threads. People here are NO BS. So I'm just regurgitating the legitimate advice I've heard.

That said, a lower receiver isn't a part you have to buy that is required to be high end. As long as it's in spec, and forged, you're good to go. Focus on the upper, bolt carrier group, barrel, and make sure to get a quality lower parts kit.

In my opinion, even if it's just a plinker, I would still shoot for the higher end products. I bought an AR before I knew better, and even though mine is mainly for plinking, I wish I would have known better. For roughly 300 dollars more I could have had something vastly superior.

'Preciate all the guidance guys, I really do. Its good to finally be on a site that's as focused as this one. I'm on a couple other gun forums, but it they're too populated w/ill-informed thread hijackers. You can't really get much done on 'em.

I got an SR-15 and Colt LE, not to mention an SR-25*. I want a carbine now in .308 for additional range work. I'd like to keep it significantly under 2 grand if I can.

LMT is promising for the lower. Choices seem to get better once you start looking at uppers.

*Got plenty of mags which makes things convenient for the carbine.

I just picked up CMMG's new .308 16" sst lightweight. The fit and finish is excellent. I have an AR-10T cut down to 18" which will shoot almost .5 moa but it still feels like an anchor to me. This thing is so compact and light it's amazing. I hope to shoot it this week sometime so I'll have to report back. I'll probably add some type of comp as no doubt recoil will be a bit harsher with a 16" carbine gas system vs. an 18" rifle.

I bought a CMMG 5.56 AR 4-5 years ago and LOVE IT!!! It is a very accurate rifle and will shoot just about any 5.56 ammo without problem. My son bought one at the same time and he says that he will not buy anything else but CMMG in 5.56 cal. Right out of the box it was hitting the target with iron sights. One thing that you must be careful with CMMG is that they sometimes put together "bargin bin rifles". What they have done is over time they have several parts from rifles that are left over from contracts, or from other companies that they put rifles together. With the parts they produce a rifle and sell it. Now its not the same as their company rifles that may have the W.A.S.P. finish which helps with accuracy. The bargin bin rifles may not have a warranty, must check with CMMG before purchase. My rifle has the WASP finish and it is fantastic. I was so impressed with CMMG I traded my DPMS 5.56 in.
