Well I finally got out to chrony my Speer 150 gr BT load with Lil'Gun. Needless to say I'm most pleased and think I have my Deer load for next season. Shot it with my 4 MOA Strikefire as well at 100 yards. You can also see the five recoved bullets- no doupt these exspanded nicely - should do the same in deer/pigs! Carries over 1000 ft/lb to over 175 yards! With 2" high at 100 yard zero will be about 3 low at 225 yards.

Load: Speer 150gr BT, Fed Case 1.360", CCI 400, COAL 2.100" 17 gr Lil'Gun

Avg. 2022 FPS
ES 38
SD 10.1

B.C. .423

If anyone could run this through the load builder program I'm real currious as to the Pressure of this load. I didn't see any pressure signs, primers looked good, and pockets were still tight for the next load. Thanks in advance- Again this load was safe in MY FIREARM if you want to try it please REDUCE load to 16 gr LilGun and start there!:nono:

What barrel length?

CMMG 16" carbine!

Thankfully Midway had some of the 150 gr BT's in stock , so I'll soon have a good stock so I can do some longer range shooting to confirm the accuracy. This bullet has always shot very well in my '06.:D

What did you fire the bullets into to test expansion?

If you look at the load data published by Hodgdon you see something really interesting with Lilgun. It produces similar velocities as H110/W296 but substantially less peak pressure. I wanted to try it in my 300blk, but the reloading store was closed on the day business go me over that direction.

I assume Hodgdon must have a good reason for max loads on Lilgun to be 7,000 to 10,000 cup LESS that the other loads? Perhaps it doesn't react well to a compressed load?

Is there any room left in the case with your 17grn load?

Published loads that are under max pressure probably fill the case or have a wider pressure variation. It does not seem likely they would stop the testing short of max pressure so there is probably a good reason they chose the max load they publish.

No there is a little room - powder comes to the bottom of the neck and I'm not seating the bullet below the neck. If you look at Hogdgon data with 135 gr bullet 18 gr is the max load. I cut the load back a full grain for an increase of 15 gr in bullet weight. The 18 gr max load for the 135 gr bullet was only 43,200 psi well under the max for the cartridge of 55,000 psi so I figured I had some wiggle room. This is why I ask if anyone could run it through a load builder program just to double check. As I said I didn't see any pressure signs.:D

Yes, they have a good reason.

I take it you mean lawyers!:D

No, I mean for engineering reasons.

Well some times those engineers are overly cautious (I've worked hand and foot with many)! I based my load on very sound deductions that I've used for many years reloading. It may not conform to the slide rule crowd but it has served me well for years. And I still have all my fingers and knock on wood -never blown up a firearm. :D

The engineers are correct. Lil'Gun is best loaded at least 5,000 psi lower than H110.

That was one of it's big selling points when it came out a few years back. Clean , consistant burn and moderate pressures- for the pistol crowd. I've not used it until I got the 300 Blk. Always want to try it but it wasn't available here. I spied a pound in my local gun store and decided to give it a try. Glad I did I'm very please with it. And its a very good match for the 300 Blk. :)

Another great load for the 300 BLK is the Win. 147gr. FMJ on top of 16gr of H110. Just a supper plinking round, cheap, and it cycles perfet. I have just over 2k now of this round through my 16" upper. i dont know how fast it goes, but then again i dont really care, it works great, is accurate and cheap. Happy shooting.

I just got my order of 200 bullets today. I'll be loading some up and putting the scope back on the AR so I can tune the load and do some distance shooting. Supposed to get some good weather later this week . I'll get it tacked at 100 yards then go to 200 yards. If I get good results we'll see what it does at 300 yards.:D

So far the load that shows the most promise for me with pulled 147s is 18.1 grns of AA1680.

I have only shot a few w/ H110, but started at just a pinch over 15 (can't remember the exact amount) and went up to 15.4. Not impressed with either load. Haven't gotten to shoot the 16 grain charge loads yet. Hoping for better results at or slightly above 16.

Hard to nail down a good load because it seems like I get wild fliers with the pulled 147's. I guess that is par for the course with cheap pulled bullets. 18.1grns of 1680, and Wolf SRM primer, put 4 rounds in 1.5" at 100yrds and the 5th round was about 2" away! Frustrating.

One thing I have noticed that is VERY apparent in testing loads: Type of primer really seems to make a big difference. I tested both CCI400's, and Wolf SRM (KVB556) primers. In the loads I tested the AA1680 groups were noticably better with Wolf primers, and the H110 groups were noticably better with CCI400's.

Keep the info on 300blk loads coming. Makes for good information.

Yea I know what you mean. I went out today and shot at 100 yards with the 17 gr load -scoped and wasn't to happy. Other then the two shooter induced flyers the group wasn't that tight. I think the 17gr load is at the top end for this load, so I'm backing it down .2 gr (16.8gr) and we'll see if that tightens it up some- hopefully the shooter will do better as well.

Well finally got out to chrony and get a target shot with the 16.8gr LilGun load with 150 gr Speer BT's . As I figured the 17 gr load was a little hot as the groups were spread pretty good so I slowed the load up about 50 fps with and average of 1989 fps. And as you can see the target shows great improvement That little 3 shot group measure less then .4" at 100 yards -yea I know a had two shooter induced flyers! But over all this load is more then I expected, next time I'll give it a go at 200 yards and see where we are at!:D
