My older son (happens to be an E5, Combat Medic) bought a new Colt LE6920 in 2008. He was deployed before ever putting a round down the barrel. He still hasn't had a chance to shoot it-motorcycling, school, getting married soon-all preventing him from getting to the range on his own time.

Is there any reason he shouldn't shoot this one as the markings are now different with the SP or (as I suggest) go out and have fun with it & not worry about the collector value 25 years down the road?

Thanks, appreciate the knowledge here.

Shoot it. They're a dime a dozen.

I've seen them listed around here for $2000 as "collectors". They never sell at that inflated price. Colt made so many of them that they will never command high dollars. In fact, (god forbid) another assault weapon ban like in '94 will drive the price up far higher than any so called collector value. In that case, the price difference between an unfired and fired rifle will be virtually nothing. Just my opinion after going through the last AWB.
