Anyone have experience with the Smith & Wesson M&P 22? I'm looking to get a 22LR pistol and am considering it. My other options are the Walther P22 or the Sig Mosquito. I want a tactical style .22 and am NOT considering a 1911 clone.

I own two of those pistols (M&P22 and Mosquito) and have shot the P22. There is no comparison with these guns IMO, the M&P22 is a far better gun in terms of functional reliability and the fact that it is a extremely close representation of the full size, centerfire M&P which is a plus for inexpensive training.

The P22 seems to run well but isn't a good representation of an actual gun. Its far to small to be used as a training tool IMO. The Mosquito is a complete joke of a gun and won't cycle properly on anything other then CCI Mini-Mags and even then has some issues from time to time. My M&P22 on the other hand has been very reliable on a multitude of ammunition. It is very accurate and the trigger, at least the weight of the pull, is better then the full size version. I would highly recommend the M&P22.

I've been exceedingly happy with my M&P22. It works best with Federal bulk pack and absolutely fails with American Eagle. CCI MiniMag works well, too. Winchester bulk pack is hit and miss.

The M&P 22 is a great little gun. I have had mine for a few months now and put about 1000 rounds through it, mostly Federal American Eagle and Blazer with hardly a hickup from it. It functions flawlessly, is very accurate and feels about as close to a real M&P as a .22 could.

At the range i usually warm up with a 100 - 200 rounds through it before switching to my 9mm. It makes for good cheap practice.

I could not be more happy with my M&P 22.

M&P 22 it is then. I just need to to check if my local dealer can get one. On thing I've notched is spare mags were not available from S&W. Is that still true?

I like mine, it seems to function better then most .22lr semi auto pistols...I have shot Winchester bulk, Remington golden bullet, CCI mini mag, and federal bulk around 3500rds so far, only malfunctions I have had were due to a DIRTY DIRTY gun...

The MP&P22 IS a P22 under the skin. Just do you know.

Personally, selling my P22 and getting a factory threaded 22/45 instead. If I had more money to drop on that I'd get a Beretta 87, but I am done with shitty 22s.

Also good to note is that the M&P22 comes with a threaded barrel.

You'll need a $45 adapter (http://www.gem-tech.com/store/pc/Walther-P22-S-W-M-P22-Adapter-25p21.htm), but it's a nice OEM feature.

That's good about the treaded barrel. When I was looking at the mosquito I was looking at the treaded barrel version. Nothing like a quite .22 LR handgun.

Nothing shitty about the M&P22.....even if it does share guts with the P22 I don't think I've read any negative review of an M&P22.

The fact that it's so reliable for a .22 and is the actual size/shape of a popular service pistol as well as being accurate make it perfect IMO.

Not sure what else you could want in a semi-auto rimfire pistol

I've got one and it's run flawlessly with Federal Bulk pack. Granted it hasn't had too many rounds through it (about 400) but I'm very impressed so far.

Same here. I have both and no issues with either, they run everything I've fed them. My brother has a mosquito and it only seems to like cci minimags, at least during break in.

Skagit Arms has one in stock. I'm going to go check it out on Thursday. If I like it I'm going to go to the range and shot my 9x18 Makarov and regular 9mm, so I can trade in my Makarov and FFG P9R for the M&P 22.

I know it's been a while but I picked one up. Here is a picture of my Bodyguard .308, M&P .22 and 410 by each other. I also finally got around to shooting the M&P 22 the other weekend and like it. Also ordered the Gemtech suppressor adapter for it and a extra mag.

I was able to get some trigger time with the M&P 22 this weekend, and it was impressive! No failures out of a couple hundred rounds, and it seemed more reliable than my old Browning Buckmark.

Color me impressed! I plan on buying one in the next couple of months. This gun should make a handy training aid for some additional trigger time.

Kind of why I picked on up. Washington State Parks carries the M&P .40. If I get hired with them I'll be use to the form factor are least.

I have one and I love it! Originally I bought a Ruger SR22 for my son to grow into when he's old enough to safely handle a pistol but in testing it, I really liked the idea of a modern style pistol that is cheap to shoot. I also have an M&P45 and figured that an M&P22 would make an excellent low cost trainer and plinker so I picked one up on sale at the PX at F.E. Warren along with a couple hundred rounds of mini-mags for breaking it in. It gobbled them right up and then its been a steady diet of Remington gold bullet bulk ammo and those too have gone through without a problem. The only thing I didn't like was that it is shipped with only 1 magazine so I ordred a couple extra from Midway as well. I know I probably should have zeroed in the sights first but here's what she did with the mini-mags at 15m from a prone position:

Will an M&P22 fit right in a kydex holster (RCS, PSS, or similar) made for a full-size M&P? If yes... 9/40, 45, or both? Thinking about training using actual carry gear, not just simple bullseye time.

Sorry to necropost... can't find the answer elsewhere, don't want to start a new thread.

Unfortunately it does not. I was thinking the same way when I got my M&P 22, however it's just a bit too big to fit. The dimensions of the slide are just a bit too thick to work. With my Raven Kydex i can almost make it work, but it really puts a lot of pressure on the holster and i dont think it is good for it. I also tried it with a Safariland ALS and it wont fit at all.

Yea My M&P22 is a very tight fit on my RC Phantom as well. The slide is just a taaaad bit thicker than my full sized M&P9.

I just picked mine up yesterday. Glad to hear all the good reviews. Now I just need to find some more .22LR ammo and some more 12 round mags for it.:fie:

Thanks guys. That's what I was afraid of. Anyone know of a good holster that DOES work for it? And not a nylon, universal fit kind of thing. What do you guys that have the M&P 22 model use for it?

Looks like Blade Tech has one but that's all I've found so far.

I have both a M&P22 and a M&P9, but only a cheap Fobus holster, and a Galco IWB Kydex/Leather to test with. The M&P 22 will fit in the cheap Fobus holster if the adjustment screw is loosened up a bit. My M&P22 will not fit in my Galco IWB even though my M&P 9mm fits fine.

It's a little snug in the crossbreed supertuck but the leather backing gives enough to make it work.

I was primarily asking if they would fit in the dovetail.

I'd like for the front to be taller. my gun shoots high and adjusting the rear for elevation doesn't work all that well. plus it seems fragile...

I know someone who did it, but required modifying his slide's dovetails. Personally I would have modified the sights to fit the gun, not modify the gun... but hey he did it and it seems to work so-far.

Have you checked Dawson Precison? They sell a fiber-optic insert front sight for m&p22, two different heights.

Finally got around to swapping out the rear for my FS 9mm rear. Took just a few minutes to file down the front of the sight and on it went. For what its worth the Allen screw on both rear sights will interchange in a pinch if you strip one out. The .22s screw is shorter but the same width and thread pitch.

Zero change in elevation but for some reason it started pulling right. About an inch and half right at 15 yards w/the rear perfectly centered. After sliding it left slightly everything was back to normal but with a much cleaner sight picture and with the wider notch in the FS rear sight the front sight is much easier to pick up.

Unless built specifically for the M&P22, No. the trigger mechanism is completely different on the M&P22 vs the centerfire versions.
The M&P 22 internally uses a hidden hammer mechanism, not striker fired.

I'm not sure what model number Safariland holster other people have been trying, but I just got a 6378-219-411 ALS model holster and it fits both the M&P22 and M&P9 with no problems. Yes, you can feel a little more drag on the draw from the slightly, only about 0.010", wider slide on the M&P22.

The different position of the safety on the M&P22 leaves it completely exposed while the end of the M&P9 is slightly guarded. Either can be moved off safe while in the holster but this is the same for most thumb safeties. I doubt anyone will be using the M&P22 as an everyday carry defense handgun but it can make an excellent lower cost practice alternative to a M&P9/40/45.
