I've looked for some pics, but can't find an AR built with all (or as much as possible) nickel parts.

I'm not sure about the WHY part of this, but to simply answer the question:

Mega offers full NiB upper / lower sets for their 308's:

Not a contributing responce or an answer... But that looks like shit. If that douche goom-bah from that jersey show had an AR15 that would be the one.

Yeah sorry about that. It's a jersey thing.

Whats the deal, is the handguard integral to the upper? How do you install the barrel on this thing?

Yes, it's a true monolithic upper, and quite a good one at that. MEGA is a top notch company (they offer the MATEN in a standard finish as well BTW, if you don't like the NiB). The advantage is that the fore-end rail is not mounted to the barrel nut. We call most Free Float rail setups free floating because they don't touch the barrel, but in reality they still attach via the barrel not and torque / pressure / harmonics do in fact play a role (although it is minimal). Not so with a monolithic receiver like this one, or with a setup like Larue's where the rail attaches directly to the upper rather than to the barrel nut.

To install the barrel you remove the gas block and slide the barrel into the upper, aligning the aligning pin and slot. Then you put the barrel nut on the uber long cylindrical barrel nut wrench that is supplied with the upper, run it down the barrel, and hand tighten to get things started. Then torque as usual. After the barrel is torqued slide the gas block and tube onto the barrel. Once in place, tighten the set screws through the slot in the bottom rail.

Thanks a0cake, for the explanation. Its definitely a wild looking upper. I was curious about that. Right on.

Disregard my failed attempt at humor.

Yes, I have seen a nickle plated AR. Took me two weeks of Eye Clorox to wash the sight of it out of my baby blues. Also seen me a gold plated one. Engraved. Wearing Bird's Eye Maple Furniture with inlays. That one cost me a month of Sundays of Eye Clorox treatments.

It's an experience I don't plan to repeat.

Rifle Dynamics and Legion Arms both coat their AR's in a type of nickel finish. Usually another coating is put on top of that (cerakote or other), however. Doesn't mean you can't get it without the paint. But there's my contribution of info.

Ugh.
I hate shiney guns!

I don't think they are any more shiny than cerakoted guns. And that is the worst possible photo to show that product... Stickman also has some photos.

It loos like a lighter FDE that has a functional benifit to me...

Don't insult the nickel finish. On the old SP1s the Coltguard (Colt's electroless nickle finish) finish was actually pretty cool looking. Though on a modern rifle, I just don't think it looks quite right.

Just last week I saw a completely polished aluminum AR. The upper, lower, pos UTG rail and receiver extension were all polished to a chrome finish. FUGLY. The A2 was mounted upside down and appeared to be loctited onto the barrel. Delton barrel was the icing on the cake.

Colt advertised it as a Maritime finish IIRC for boaters.

The products from Mega do not have a glossy or polished appearance, but rather a matte sheen. The dynamic range of cameras do not mimic the human eye, so what we are left with is images which are exposed for the overall scene which creates an improper resemblance of the actual item.

I'm not sure that my images are any better than what is already out there, but I've shot a series with the above in mind. I'll see if I can dig them up, though I'm not certain how much of a difference people will notice.

Would you consider it for a personal SPR or Carbine?

Its subjective based on the color. Being that I would have no problems shooting someone with a watermelon flavored pink space blaster, I wouldn't care for home defense.

For patrolling, obviously the finish doesn't blend well with most outside environments. Inside my house, I'm not worried about blending in, I'm worried about ceasing the threat from those who would do harm.

The above followed by Krylon should do the trick. You may have to re-spray the gun more often than with a standard finish but that's no big deal. I haven't tried the above product but I've heard it's good for nickel plated metal.

I had an SP1 in electroless nickel from the factory. Colt said they produced about 1000 of them . Not bright shiny but not black either.
