I have a optic that needs a home and was thinking of an inexpensive .223 bolt gun preferably with a 1/7,8 or 9 twist. Whats the best for the money?

I like my Savages.

Savage and Remington will have the 1:9" twist and be reasonably priced.

Im not aware of any that have 1:8 or 1:7 that arent super expensive.

youll find many that are 1:12 (like the the one I bought before i knew better)

I can vouch for a nice 1/8 twist that's affordable, incredibly accurate, and has a nice trigger: the Tikka T3 lite stainless. I have one, they come in LH/RH, and are the smoothest action and nicest trigger I've ever seen in an inexpensive factory rifle.

Here you go, blued model:

And there are varmint and tactical models in .223, for a bit more.

The varmint:

l also favor Tikkas especially for a hunting rifle that l dont plan on modifying in any way other than adding a scope.

Some Reminton 700s and savages can be found really cheap and are usually good, the only problem is the cheapest ones usually need a new stock or they arent consistent so you have to factor in a few more hundred there. The best deals l've found are on used older rem700 hunting rifles with wood stocks. l
picked up one for 325$ bedded the stock and its a nice hunting rifle for the cost.

Depends really on your budget.

I was trying to keep it cheap say around $500 or less.

You can get the Remington 700 SPS Tactical for around $550. It has a 1 in 9" twist. A good friend of mine recently picked one up and is happy with it.

The Stevens 200 is the exact same rifle as the older 110s. Not-so-good trigger and a crappy stock, but it's a good base to build off of. Anything that fits a non-accutrigger 110 will fit it.

I forgot to mention that my Savage 24" 9 twist barrel shoots 75 grain AMAXs great.

I've used it in many matches to 600 yards. I don't feel the rifle has ever held me back.

Savage or a used Remmy.

That will knock the Tikka out of the running; best price I've seen on a T3 the last few years has been around $575, and usually more like $630.

Given the $500 price cap, LL called it: Savage or Remmy.

Look on GB ect... I just picked one up in GA for 605.00. I've got some glass laying around to but have been looking at alittle better glass after load development is completed.

ETA: I was originally looking for a used LTR but they seem to be commanding a 3-400 premium over the PSS. Besides, if it don't shoot and i opt to try recrowning the muzzle, I can always lop 6" off with a hack saw prior to crowning.

We have Tikkas for around $500. But it would be for a sporter barrel. But I would prefer the Remmy. I did have a Tikka 22-250 laser beam.

Remmy gets my vote

I had a customer order one of these recently, sight unseen. I got an excited voicemail from him the day after he picked it up raving about the accuracy and how good it shot. He was really surprised with how nice it was. I haven't shot one, but the gun looked and felt very nice. Really pretty stock with very nice checkering on it.

CZ also makes some really nice wood-stocked bolt carbines in .223 and 7.62

Thanks for that link. That's cool as hell. Looks like the street price is right at $500 if you can find one in stock.

Very interesting. That would make for a great Grendel conversion.

Check out the new Savage Hog Hunter series. Comes in .223 and .308. Good base to build off. I got the .308 and my only disappointment is the stock. It's set up pretty good out of the box. Iron sights, threaded muzzle and tactical bolt. It can by converted over to a DBM fairly easy. I got my for $419 out the door.

I got the .308 and my only disappointment is the stock. My Savage Scout came with the "milk jug" stock. I bought some stone texture paint at Walmart and then put camo on over that and the feel and look is much better.

Yea, I appreciate the Savage stock "free floating" the barrel, but the stocks that come are these guns are a real let down. I know it's to keep the price down, but geeze! I'm shopping for a stock, everything else I like.

Here is mine as it sits, waiting till after Christmas to get a Vortex Diamondback.

I have one and like it very much. You can keep it stock or gussie it up to your hearts desire...but you don't have to go as far as I did.

I would probably start searching gunbroker for a used Howa. I picked up a slightly used 300wm for $365 a few years ago for a short notice elk hunt that didn't pan out but have been very pleased with it. Hogue stock and all it shoots about any decent ammo into 1-1.25" and will keep Rem core-lokt stuff around 1.5". For an off the shelf, $365 hunting rifle, with a spotter barrel those results are hard for me to be unhappy with.

ETA: The 150gr core-lokt shoots closer to 2" as I found out last week. 180s do a little better.
