Just had a thought while driving down the road last night... Military has some headlight covers that filter white light into (mostly) IR, downrange we had some high-speed IR-HID lights mounted on our trucks and rollers...is there any civillian alternative to these? I obviously dont want to replace my vehicle's standard headlights with these, but wiring in a killswitch for my dash/radio lights and shutting off running headlights would be awesome...could probably get away with replacing the fog lights with some IR lights of some sort..but google is not helping me out much.

Would be great for some post-SHTF driving with NVGs and a fun project. Anyone else thought of this?

A few companies make IR accessory lights, have seen them on some 4x4 sites.

Once you get them wired up, choose your switch wisely:

IR lights draw a lot of power and get hot so precautions have to be taken not to damage your vehicle with use.

Good ones are expensive and the surplus I have seen are way past their hour usage life and can croak out at any time.

Just do a lot of research and read the buyers reviews of IR units before jumping and have fun as they really can extend your N/V viewing distance but on the other hand can also give your location away for thos using N/V to find you.

Very aware of the risks/benefits, I am just generally asking if anyone has seen a civvie retrofit kit anywhere that wasnt stupid expensive like the mil "surplus" on fleabay.

Another benefit of IR lights in general is that you could get away with a much less expensive NVD. The gen 1 works by utilizing an IR light. Gen 3+ is actually an intensifier.

Gen 1 + IR spotlights and various other IR gadgets would be considerably cheaper than a Gen 3 unit, correct?

Cheaper than $2,800?

Just do a Google search for Lightforce IR lights. They have IR covers for about $100. They work great.

You will also need to kill all the lights in the dash. They aren't easy to ignore and the small lights on the dash get real bright with n/v on
