View Full Version : Remington 700 AAC-SD range report, decent i guess

This is my second attempt at a semi precision bolt gun, first the specs:

Remington 700 AAC-SD
20 inch barrel
308 win
HS precision stock( PSS takeoff)
Vortex 2.5-10 EBR1/MOA reticle, pretty impressive!!!!
Harris Bi-pod 6-9
Ammo: FGMM 175 grain SMK

First time shooting it with new stock, the hogue stock was ok, but i cant stand the feel of the over mold material, could not find my ruler and have not purchased a caliber, will buy one soon though. Overall the gun shot well, i really maybe considering a AICS 1.5 , because i really like the idea of magazine fed for sheer speed but that further down the road as well as NF 5.5-22 . Since i could not find ruler, tape measure etc, i used something even simpler a quarter, now im no sniper but i, like others, am intrigued at the idea of putting rounds on target accurately at distance 100-600 yard for me, for now, maybe further out as skill and equipment develop more. So considering this a average group i assume? , are others with similar builds getting better or worst groups, im an average shooter, just trying to get deeper into the sport/ maybe f class/tactical rifle matches in the future. Sorry for crappy phone pics, and thanks in advance for the feedback

I just picked one up and put it in a AICS 2.0. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet- hoping to get out this week sometime and work it up. Seems like a nice gun, can't wait till the action and trigger work themselves in a bit.

Nicely done. Can't beat that gun for the money. And it can grow up with you.

Id say thats good shooting. Measuring with my Mk1 eyeball Id say thats right about an inch grouping there with factory ammo. Get into reloading and find a load your gun really likes and it could get better.

Did I miss the distance in the post somewhere?

Still have the factory trigger? Is the stock bedded? My 700 aac-sd in a h&s w/ Timney 510 shoots .5 moa or better with swa 175 smk.

You measure the widest point, then subtract the bullet diameter. (.308)

abanks8245

and just subtract the bullet diameter

English... please speak it.

Are you trying to tell me that the target is being measured correctly, or are you trying to ask me how to correctly measure the target?

You can't have it both ways. Capitalization, punctuation, and taking the time to type your entire question/statement would sure go a long way toward informing me what the hell it is you are trying to ask or say.

Use this. (http://www.ontargetshooting.com/download.html) Maybe it will help.

... or maybe it will further damage your communication skills. :suicide:

Quick and dirty is measuring from the center of the two holes, that are the farthest apart. That new caliper makes it pretty easy. With a group that has holes over one another, it becomes a little more complicated in finding the true center of the holes. Then Orkan's method is the best. Come to think of it, I'm over thinking, and using just one method all the time is best........Orkan's.

I am asking if the position of caliper prongs are correct? If they are not, where should the prongs be placed. If I am asking/ or wording my statement wrong, my apologies. Lets not get to serious on my communication skills, that never been an issue. Lets keep it involving my target and range report , thanks for the help.

I would say thats a good choice, check out snipers hide. A lot of members (including myself) started and still use the aac-sd.

I got mine out and zero'd it, but a 20+mph wind and a lack of time stopped me from getting dope for longer shots. Have you shot yours past 100? Any chance you can help a brother out with some dope :D since I'm shooting in a match this weekend and I won't have time to work it up myself. I've found some stuff online, but it would be nice to have the data from the same model rifle.

Thanks

I have seen as much as 75fps difference in velocity between these rifles... so his dope may hurt you more than it helps.

If you have a velocity at least... then any number of free ballistic calculators on the net can help you get close.

I had a chance to get a AICS, which i wanted initially but price held me back, for my 700 AAC-SD so i jumped at the opportunity when i got one for a outstanding price from a buddy. The gun is considerably heavier but very comfortable. I also got a chance to use and hopefully keep:D the Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50. I have handled some nice Nightforces, S&B , and a USO , the glass on the Vortex HD is amazing. I am just really getting my feet wet in bolt guns, and high end optics but Vortex is really stepping up to the plate. I am blown away on clarity of this scope, even though i am learning there is more to quality optics then Clarity, but it really helps. I have not had a chance to test tracking and adjustments, want to get better trained on properly using this scope, considering i am still a novice. I plan on competing in several F class/ Tactical rifle matches in area soon. I have found a amazing set up with the AICS and Vortex razor HD , i think this gun is official done.
Here is gun at range today after getting zeroed, and group shot at 100 yards

Very respectable group with off the shelf factory ammo, I am quite sure if you can create some loads to your specific rifle, it will get better. Most remington 700 308s use a 1/12 twist. Try some 168's which are perfect for that rate. Good luck :)

I am just curious. Are you referring to the OP's rifle?

I own a Remington 700 AAC-SD in .308, and the factory barrel is a 1/10 twist. I use 175 GMM.

I'm not starting a fight or anything. Just curious what you mean. Thanks.

That is a very respectable group. I picked one up a few months ago but haven't had time to get to the range. I'm glad to see that a tight group is attainable.

but back on topic... i'd be curious to see additional range reports on this rifle

My posts on this forum, the few that I have, are for I guess you can call it my small contribution to a steady passing of information/opinions on this site, just trying to give back, and contribute. Upon reading my post, it was slightly assed up, and for that I will type a little more clearly and concisely. Message received

You don't get points for "passing information" if the information is wrong or not organized properly.

Not bad. I know my AAC shoots ok at 100-200 but really starts to shine at 300 (fartyherst shot yet). I shoot 178 BTHP from Hornady in front of some RL15 powder in LC brass. My rifle LOVES it. I have averaged all of my shot groups at different ranges and keep adjusting accordingly... My 300 avg. group so far is 1.75". I never would have thought I could do this but it just feels right.

I don't have any pics, (old computer took a dump), but with an Rem 700 AAC, Bell and Carlson Tactical Medalist Style 2, Leupold Mark 4 Rings, Leupold Mark 4 Base, and a Trijicon Tr22-2G, I was able to shoot .75" Groups at 100m. I was shooting in the prone position, using my backpack as a rest. I am very new to the whole "precision shooting" world, but I think this is pretty darn good. I was using Federal 168gr, BTHP Match ammo. I would like to try shooting 300-500 meters, but simply do not have access to such lengths. Anyone here have a experience with this rifle at longer distances?

The rifle isn't shooting badly, but I believe it should do better; at least mine did. Technically, mine was an SPS Tactical, not an AAC, but I had it in an HS Precision LTR takeoff stock, steel bedded. I found it shot much better with Black hills 175gr than with Federal Gold Medal.

7 shots at 100 yds (elevation adjustment made after the first two shots were obviously a little high):

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab104/ASH556/100yd.jpg

And 3 shots at 600 (That's a 2" bull):

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab104/ASH556/600yd.jpg

So, it was a solid sub-MOA gun out to 600.

Here's what she looked like when I traded her for my SBR:
