Like the title states, I am looking to get a sling and know basically nothing about them and want to do it right the first time so would love to hear advice from you experienced guys.

i wouldn't consider myself one of the "experienced guys" but i am using a viking tactics 2 point, attached with QD swivels mounted to the stock and built in attachment in the centurion c4 rail. my other AR has the same setup but uses a rail mounted gear sector QD socket on a DD 12.0 lite rail.

If you use the orange search button, and enter "slings" or "sling choice" you'll get more threads than you'll know what to do with.

Here's just one to start with: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=24223

I personally use Blue Force Gear VCAS slings. I prefer the padded version, with sewn-in QD swivels. I purchase mine from G&R Tactical (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=VCAS-PB-200-OA) (actually, I think they're the only place you can buy the padded version, with sewn-in QD swivels now).

As far as attaching the sling to the AR, I prefer the front attachment point to be at the barrel nut, and the rear mounting point on my stock, mounted opposite the side that touches my cheek (I'm right handed). Having the rear mounting point on the stock makes the carbine lay closer to my chest when it is slung, as opposed to mounting the sling at the receiver extension endplate.

Here's a pic of my primary AR:

(There is a zip tie looped through the QD swivel and stock because the QD cup on the Magpul CTR isn't equipped with rotation limiters, and I don't want my sling twisted up.)

I've also tried the sling mounted to a receiver extension endplate, and found that while it works just fine, the carbine tends to have more "wiggle room" when slung (the stock sticks out in front of me about 6 inches or so).

Here's the sling mounted at the receiver extension endplate:

VTAC padded two point. Sling mounted to rail in front using VTAC LPSM and on the right side of my stock (CTR) like steadyup.

None padded VCAS, mounted left of barrel nut on DD rail and on end plate. Basically what is SteadyUp's second picture just with a none padded sling with standard swivels.

Been tempted to try out a Magpul MS3 but haven't, have one for another gun though.

I like the adjustable two point slings and prefer the Blue Force Gear Vickers Combat Application Sling.

The front attached just forward of the receiver, and the rear attached to the opposite side of the stock

On my 6920 bfg vcas, on my lmt a magpul ms3. Both with a magpul asap plate, colt is through the oem mount and the lmt is a rsa. I feel the perfect sling would be a xombination of the two.

Exactly this.

I use a padded vickers sling with QD, attaching to just infront of the upper receiver and to the reverse side of the butt stock (right side of my magpul STR as a right-handed shooter).

On my duty weapon, I use a padded vickers sling without QD, mounted to the side-facing sling loop at the FSB and threaded through the standard M4 stock on the left side. I'll be swapping out my stock and getting a fortis qd attachment point soon I hope.

There have been numerous sling discussions. As for style, what kind, etc.. .. the only person who will truly know is you.
