Does anyone make a good high heat flat black in a rattle can? I have tried rustoleum high heat grill paint, looked great after baking it. However a month or so later i wiped down the barrel with a dry rag and the finish turned shiny and reflective.

Are there any better options that wont polish up? (besides cerakote or others that require sandblasting / airbrushing)

Both Brownells Aluma-Hyde II (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1117/Product/ALUMA-HYDE-reg-II)(air cure) or Gun-Kote (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1150/Product/GUN-KOTE-trade-OVEN-CURE-GUN-FINISH)(oven cure) work well compared to most readily available spray paints.

I've also had decent results using high temp brake caliper paint with several coats of clear as this combo is significantly more resistant to chemicals than grill paint.

I did a two step that consisted of Brownells Alumahyde II in black. Once it dried I followed it with high temp BBQ paint. No issues after thousands of rounds.

What did you do to prep it for painting?

Degrease with hot water and Simple Green and then rinse. It took about 5 minutes.

I have had good luck with the air cure cerakote fwiw. Prep was about what IG stated.

I've used BBQ paint on some AK parts and Duplicolor engine paint on a barrel, and no issues with either one. The engine paint is supposed to be highly resistant to chemicals and OK up to 500 degrees, which is hotter than I'm likely to get the barrel that I've used it on. So far it is the most durable spray can paint I've found.

If you expect temperatures over 500 I would look at exhaust system header paint, which is rated to over 1000 and should also be chemical resistant.

I use the same surface prep that IG described, but I wipe down with acetone after the water is completely dry.

Here's Cerakote's "graphite" black - this pics shows some different sheens. I have all of my stainless barrels coated by a local guy for $40. The graphite is just perfect. It's a "satin", not a true flat - true flat isn't necessarily good for longevity. A slight sheen offers better scuff and chemical protection (slightly harder finish).

I say go big or go home. Send it off to these guys and have it ceramic coated. I had some Subaru turbo/exhaust parts that were coated and it should be sweet on a barrel :D

Edit: I've never used any of the whatever-cote products but a can of very high temp engine paint should work well.

Hellz no - I did the Subaru downpipe coat stuff too.

Ceramic coating is to KEEP HEAT IN (precisely WHY you get downpipes coated.) NOT what you want on a barrel!!

There is Gun-Kote and Cerakote for a reason. It's good stuff and properly applied it's touch as nails.

It was kinda a joke (hence the big grin) which is why i went back and recommended the Duplicolor. Of course if he did paint on top of the swaintech it wouldn't polish up like he was having problems with. OP also said he wasn't interested in gunkote, cerekote, etc.

BBQ paint, that's mighty crafty, sir. I would have never considered such an obvious solution.

Ceramic coating can be employed to retain heat in the DP/exhaust AND reduce external DP/exhaust temps (if applied correctly), but that's another discussion entirely. ;)

At any rate, Cerakote is extremely durable as is Gun-Kote, but those obviously do not come in a spray can.
