VZ FRAG grips in Green Canvas, which were part of a special run for me. The G10 FRAG grips can be ordered from VZ grips website. The FRAG patern was developed by Ned Christiansen.

I just put a pair on the XTAC, but I have over a thousand rounds down range on my other 1911 (Axiom) with the FRAG grips, and these grips are my new favorite without question. I simply can't say enough good things about them.

So what did it take to get a special run? I have tried with no luck to get canvas Frags, Operator IIs, and Gunner Grips.

I would love to see more canvas options.

Not sure if he can do the color but Larry Davidson does great G10 grips and usually if you just email him he can do almost anything you want. I'd try him. Great guy. He makes grips for large manufacturers like springfield's TRP and EMP lines. His site is not the best and you have to email your order. Davidsonknives.com

Thanks, but I prefer canvas or linen micarta over g10

As we have discussed previously, I like canvas better than G10, too. G10 is just lacking. However as it was explained to me, the patterns with sharp edges or corners are made with G10, because the G10 will keep those sharp edges and corners better and be more durable. I believe that explanation, but I dont care. I want canvas micarta not G10.

This is my grandfather's service pistol from the war. He was a Lt. in the 13th Bombardment Squadron in the USAF. He mainly flew A-20s, but also flew B-17s for a little while. I vaguely remember the stories he would tell my brother and I as children. His dementia got pretty bad by the time we were teenagers, but when I started shooting, I was shown this pistol below. Now, I'm working on cleaning it up so that we can put it into a presentation case. He passed away in '05.

As you see, he made it his own by replacing the left side grip panel with a picture of my grandmother. It is a homemade fiberglass panel with a photo of her in the middle. I think this is one of the cooler things I have seen since gaining interest in shooting. I hope you guys enjoy.

Welcome to M4C

I have not posted this anywhere else.

My internet is acting up a little this evening, but I'd like to send you a PM tomorrow sometime to see if you can teach me a thing or two about taking this apart and cleaning it up. I can field strip, but I'd like to do a detail strip. I have a sneaking suspicion it's not as easy as taking Glocks and Berettas apart.

If you can get the original pattern with the diamond cuts, they're more aggressive and I like those much more. I had a pair of these but had to RMA them back to Strider and they sent the ones you see in my picture now. The cuts are a little more rounded and oval and not as abrasive as before.

Bowser,

Are those the G10 or Micarta versions of the Gunner grips? I have been looking everywhere for a set of Micarta grips and cannot find any.

I really don't know. I just know that the ones I have now aren't like the older ones I've had and normally seen in pictures.

Edit: I guess from reading what I've seen so far, I have the Micarta grips.

Monkey Edge has Strider grips too. Again, don't know which kind they are.

Mr. Christiansen- that Shield Driver rear sight is very intriguing. I haven't seen anything else like them at all. Do you offer those for sale, or is that a custom-made part of the gun?

Ned Christiansen
01-13-12, 18:44
They are now available, for installation by your 'smith, for $70.

This is a design I started using in 1985 and have been making them since then, usually one at a time, for custom builds. I finally have started making them in quantities that allow me to sell them.

I noticed than when I switched to the VZ frag grips from my CTC grips my reload time improved significantly because I had better access to the mag release and had to shift the gun less in my hand. So this is my attepmt at improving the access to the mag release on my CTC Grips.

thankfully the grips still work...

That was the first time we took out the special forces. Straight out of the box, no cleaning or lube and it was a tack driver. I was very impressed with it. The slide and action feels like it's riding on ball bearings. Trigger is light and crisp with a short reset. I'm sure it will be better once it's actually cleaned, oiled and broken in.

Here was my very first shot with it. Definitely the gun and not me lol.

Started life as an RIA GI 1911-A1. Frame internals: hammer, trigger, safeties, sear, etc are from a friend's stainless Kimber, radiused the frame for the beavertail myself. Added the arched MSH, Novak sights (Front was milled by my smith), Wilson mag well and Ed Brown cocobolo grips, then had it two toned in KG Guncoat.

Only issues I've had out of it were HPs not feeding with the original ACT mags. Swapped them for 47D's and its been flawless since.

thanks! it shoots really well and feels a lot better than a friend's stock one. i am not the original owner, it showed up at a local pawn shop and i picked it up this morning. the slide glides smoothly and the trigger is very nice as well. whoever set it up did a great job.

i do prefer the 20lpi checkering on the pro, i like the aggressive texture. shooting both back to back, the colt is a very smooth shooter. the added frame weight plus mounting the light contribute to the feel. the pro has a distinct mechanical feel to me, its like a fine instrument where every motion is distinct and it locks back up perfect every time.

Not "planning" on a whole lot of mods, but we know how that goes. I've got a set of grips coming, planning on a trigger job and going from there. I'd like to get it coated flat black, but I still need to decide what coating and who to send it to.

This is Excalibur; a Colt MK IV, Series 70 .45 ACP. I've owned it since June, 1980. I had it customized by Brown in July of the same year. The modifications I had done to my specs back in those days were, throated/ramped, ejection port flared and lowered, King-Tappan Combat sights, trigger job, Colt extended grip safety and a recoil shock-buffer. My name and U.S. Army were roll-marked to the slide. After Brown completed the work, he sent it off to Florida for the then-new black Teflon coating treatment (everything but the bore and springs). Numerous grips have adorned it in it's lifetime.

In the years I've carried it, I've added a Videcki trigger, Ambi-safety, extended magazine release and a Commander hammer. I've lost track of the round-count but, it is legion. It is very accurate and still tight on the slide-to-rail fit and, it still wears the factory-original collet bushing.

I've used it as a concealed carry-gun, duty-gun, IPSC-competition gun and it has the battle scars to tell of it's history.

I have complete trust in Excalibur.

This is Excalibur; a Colt MK IV, Series 70 .45 ACP. I've owned it since June, 1980. I had it customized by Brown in July of the same year. My name and U.S. Army were roll-marked to the slide. After Brown completed the work, he sent it off to Florida for the then-new black Teflon coating treatment (everything but the bore and springs). Thanks brother, I only looked at it after seeing yours :D The two tone was in the back of the display case, I thought they only had the black one then the guy took it out and I just couldn't pass it up, especially for the same price, some folks want more $$ for the two tone guns.

Thank you Brother! For my SCG I looked high and low in Cali. Finally founds one years later and got it. I haven't fired it yet, maybe I will some day. But for now it's my Collection gun. Since I'm a collector at heart, a "Colt .45" sounded somewhat iconic, so I had to have it.

Missed not having a 1911. Decided to give SIG a try. Picked it up used, but upon closer inspection I don't think it was ever shot. It was mint inside and outside. I put 150 rounds through it, few hiccups (failure to feeds, maybe 5 or so. One of those being a hollow point. Going to put a few hundred more down range in the next couple weeks to see if it works out. Just ordered a holster and mag pouch for it. Need to pick up a few more Wilson 47Ds too.

Not sure whether to coat it, or just beat the hell out of it to get rid of the shiny. Either way, that's gotta go, and I need to look into a decent magwell...at least a Chen mainspring housing....more research.

Great base to do pretty much anything you want to with. Ionbond would look really good and is durable finish. A nice magwell, good trigger, maybe an extended mag release, and a good set of sights are all you need on that one..

I know the feeling. It's why the Colt Rail Gun I bought is a shiny. I was too impatient to wait the 48 hours for them to order me the other, so I took that one home. It's since been worked over pretty well. Think it's at the house in South Carolina, though...

Try the Smith & Alexander slim magwell if you like your thin grips. I put one on my Valor and it completes the pistol!!

BTW, you won't be disappointed in your choice, in fact you did better buying the DW. The TRP is a fine pistol, my nephew has one and it shoots a lot like the Valor...only the Valor has a better fit and finish.

You can find these without the "TACTICAL" roll mark, Bomar cut adjustable rear and bull barrel, but it would be either custom shop or wait for a GI spec one to pop up. Mine only has "Operator cal .45" on the side, Heinie fixed rear sight, and no bull barrel. Worth the wait (for me at least) but did cost me a pretty penny.

Bob Serva built this gun for me exactly to my specs....slide is ion bonded, frame has Yukon T-11 coat, all small parts are ion bonded, Wolff Springs, trigger breaks like glass....trijicon night sights w/ rear adjustable for elevation, magwell.

I'd put this up against a Wilson Tactical Supergrade or Larry Vickers 1911 model any day of the week in terms of accuracy. Worth every penny....only took 4 months to complete the build.

Thanks Bob!

I just finished a little project "on my own time" for a special client. This started out as a new Springfield PX9152LP. It was not a full-house job. All original components except the MSH were used, although I did some general dehorning, and swooping of the safeties. I used the original barrel. Springfield makes some barrels (stainless) that are as good as any aftermarket barrels; their run of the mill barrels are probably "90% adequate". This one was stainless and was somewhere in between in terms of fitting and grouping-- not bad at all but not bank-vault-tight, an OK grouper but not breathtaking. I threw in a Kart bushing I had around just because it fit the slide tighter without me having to put a bunch of time into it, and was tighter on the barrel, but did not require fitting there either.

The main goal was to take it "as was" and improve it without making a multi-week, make-everything-perfect job out of it. Trigger work and other action tuning, dehorning, tuning and checking things like extractor tension, chamber, barrel fit, throating..... the usual stuff, plus a little ergonomic improvement in the form of thin grips (VZ FRAGs) and a frontstrap/MSH treatment.

Overall view showing the FRAG'd frontstrap. The gun's original contrasting two tone scheme of black rounds and polished bare stainless flats is carried over: I have applied Brownells Baking Laquer after the FRAG job, baked it, and then polished the paint from the tops of each individual FRAG.

Same thing on the MSH:

And, showing the slightly rounded bottom of the MSH. This is an aluminum one from VZ Grips (yes, they make MSH's too!). I reduced it slightly and FRAG'd it. This replaces the steel MSH that had 20 LPI checkering and a magwell bolted to it. All well and good, but I wanted to reduce size, weight, girth, and "signature" a little. The magwell got opened up to compensate for the deletion of the bolt-on, which was OK in some ways and not so much in others.

Great Looking gun Ned. I have that same pistol at home. I really like that grenade pattern. How does it feel shooting? I changed out the full length guide rod for a GI style and beveled the front and back sides of the guide rod itself, and went with a 18.5 lb spring.

Nothing like a TRP.

That's a really a cool gun.

I have pretty traditional taste (I consider a MEUSOC clone to be fancy) but that turned out very nice looking. Not too over the top but it has a very distinct appearance that looks like it'll add some grippyness to the frame.

+1 for some seriously original work.

Thanks, guys. FRAG does the deal when you are shooting and manipulating the pistol, but it is not actively catchy and snaggy. The edges that provide traction are somewhat self-shielded until you actually press flesh into them.

Damon, I saw that you had one. On this one, to get the mainspring housing out, I had to first unscrew the magwell from it. It was putting a bind on everything and pulling the mainspring housing so tight against its retaining pin that I could not remove or reinstall the thing as a unit. Plus I believe it might eventually have broken the MSH retaining pin. Other than that it was a pretty solid pistol as-was.

Why I use a 1911 for a duty and carry weapon....cause it shoots like this at 25 yards rapid fire.

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m547/Adam112211/DSCF0227-1.

And here is the qualification target from 25 yards, this is why spending 2K plus on a custom pistol is worth every damn penny.

That's impressive rapid fire hits at 25 yards; which 1911 did you use to poke that bull-eye?

Thanks for the compliment. I used a fully custom built (to my specs) fusion tac-5 full size. Took about 4. Months to get it but it's as accurate as any 1911 I have ever shot. I'd put it up against a Wilson tactical super grade any day of the week. Search the forum and you will see a pic of the weapon. Want a 1911 built exactly how you want it check out fusion firearms.

I have the same TacOps as you without the threaded barrel. Love it!
