Thank you. I think you have assembled a pretty solid basis for a duty built pistol.... I would consider ditching both sights though, but that's just me. The YOBO rear would be a nice option and it would retain the "retro" look.

Good point. I'm probably ditching both sights. Maybe if I could find a staked on sight that's high enough to match the YOBO rear...

Will probably end up swapping out the barrel (Kart maybe) and ignition parts too. I want an ordinary/stock lookin' 1911, with upgraded accuracy, trigger (4.5 lbs. and niiice) and reliability.

I don't worry much about the collector's value, it would probably be worth more after a reputable smith has done his magic on it anyway.

Dave;

You have to stop posting photos of this gun. My "Black Army" is with Steve right now for an Axiom build like yours with a few small changes. Your gun makes me lust for it to be done every time I see it.

Don't worry the wait will be worth it.

in order to help with your wait:

David, Kevin here, I stare at your AXIOM pics about at least 3-4 times a week anticipating my own arrival from Steve. Looks like Dos and I are in the same boat, him with a beautiful Custom Shop gun to tide him over and me with a Miller Custom I got from the janitor a few months ago.

Sorry Janitor, I keep forgetting your "waiting for the day" as well.:D

Waiting for a custom is a lot more pricey than I thought! The money you invest for the build is one thing, the money you spend on guns to "pacify" the wait is another!;)

I have thoroughly enjoyed these 72 pages of some of the nicest pistols that I have ever seen. I would like to get some opinions if I could on the Dan Wesson pistols (Commander Classic Bobtail), are they GTG or would my money be better spent on a Springer Operator?
Thanks,
John

Long story short, My Dad bought one, I later bought it from him, he bought an XD, when I was down visiting he shot mine, and bought another one that same day.

I think that about says it all.

I've had no issues and been nothing with impressed with them. They've discontinued them, I think to go onto to only Forged Slides and Frames, so if you can find one NIB, JUMP ON IT, as they will not be as affordable as they are now for much longer.

The old ones (like mine and my father's) have cast frames, but, realistically, I wouldn't worry about a cast frame, they still have forged slides, and no MIM parts.

Great values. If I find time tomorrow, I'll take and post some pictures of mine.

ETA: I finished the first half of that message and started posting, I love my Dan Wesson and thought I was going to end up with a TRP (I'm only 22, so...), but I had been shopping for a 1911 for years, the "one" for me, I love the pistol, no issues what so ever. My dad's is the same story. I also got mine for a utilitarian purpose of using it as a CC gun, and it works great for that. Again, nothing but good things to say about them.

ETA 2: More on the Dan Wesson, I think they're pretty much from what I've heard on other forums, going after the Semi-Custom/Custom Market now... I think they're not going to go after a great value pistol, which is a terrible shame... the retail on them jumped up like 150-200$, and now they're discontinuing them. My Dad bought his first one for $949, last December, and bought one in August for 1049$, and those are both below what the MSRP's for them were.

The reason I also believe that is, they have the CBOB discontinued but they introduced the Valor BOB.... Essentially IMHO the same pistol, maybe a bit more fitting, etc. But I've been nothing but pleased with mine. I liked the 25 LPI front strap, contrasting Trijicon Green Front/Yellow Rear three dot Tritium sights, I liked the grip safety, Ed Brown Bob Tail, Stainless Steel Slide and frame (I figure it's a carry gun, it'll be best suited to resist rust against your body) it fills the role exactly of what I need and would want. I was also worried that without a Magwell I might have issues, as prior to using this 1911, I had shot some 1911's, but my family hadn't ever owned one, I was worried about seating single stack magazines well, they bevel the mag well, and it's something I can do without losing concentration.

The magwells are nice, but I wouldn't say they're a necessity, and I absolutely don't think you need a FLGR, that's another thing I decided I didn't need. The gun's extremely accurate.

But http://cz-usa.com/products/view/dan-wesson-v-bob/ the difference is the Valor will have Heinie Night Sights, Forged Frame, and G10 Grips for MSRP of $1658 (Stainless Steel Model in the drop down box)... versus http://cz-usa.com/products/view/dan-wesson-commander-classic-bobtail/ for MSRP of $1191 in .45 ACP (Drop Down box, again).

On another note, that was a major point of concern for me with the Bob Tail'd 1911's, honestly, for me, the feeling of the grip didn't change at all. I'd say it feels just about exactly the same as a 1911 with a Flat MSH.

Also, since you're comparing and contrasting still (maybe) a 4.25'' and 5'' barrel 1911, from everything I've heard, they chronograph just about the same FPS, so don't worry about losing any velocity with that 3/4'' less barrel length.

(I'll edit this and add pictures tomorrow.)

Hope that was helpful.

Thanks! :D Daily drawstroke practice, many a hunting and camping trip and much fondling have helped get the finish along to where it is (or isn't) today. I believe that a fair amount of shooting helped the process along as well...

As for the safety, Hatfield's Gunsmithing in Manassas, VA did the work. I'll need to find the worksheet to see what they put on, but I basically just described to them that I was working my to a MEU/SOC clone, and that's what they put did.

Still a work in progress in my mind. I only just got it back last week, though, so I'll be hanging on to it for about 1500 rounds IOT judge what still needs tweaking. Most likely, sights, but since it started life as a Trophy Match, I get the feeling that it'll be some work to find a lo-pro rear for that shelf/dovetail arrangement.

Just wanted to post up a few pics of my new 1911. It's a Dan Wesson CCO. Commander slide on aluminum officer's frame. Those Dan Wesson's used to be screaming good deal but they went up dramatically in price this year. I have CBOB in .45 that I carry and a good friend of mine has two of them in 10mm.

Thanks in advance

civilian
03-30-10, 15:58
Definitely better than bluing, but not enough holster work as yet to determine whether it's better than Birdsong T which was my normal go-to finish on a 1911. Both the Colt and the Springfield were my first experiences with Ionbond, and I went with it on this pair based on John Harrison's recommendation. So far it seems to be holding up well although it's a fricking fingerprint magnet finish.

It is about time you decided to get that thing dirty.

Is the NH Vickers new?

You are absolutely right. I have been shooting it but had refrained from carrying it or running it in classes. But now that I have John working on a second build that will be a hard use build, I decided to say screw it and run it hard.

The finish that Turnbul used appears to be pretty delicate but a little character will be good for it. One of the main reason I decide to turn it into a carry gun vs a range toy was because I am much faster with it and it is as accurate as any of my Baers or Nighthawk etc... The YOBO rear and gold bead front is simply awesome. I will be adding a bead to my Vickers and Baer Super-Tac in the near future. Now I need to find the right grips for it. The 10-8's are very nice and I like them a lot but I think I can find better for this pistol.

The Vickers is a few years old and I carry it often. It has also been through a Vickers and Hackathorn class without missing a beat. LAV even commented that he was surprised I was using it because I guess they are becoming somewhat collectable... Mine is the only one built without the red dot from the factory.;)

Congrats on your new Colt. If you plan on shooting it a lot I would recommend fitting a new thumb safety. For whatever reason Colt shit the bed on that part and it really is a POS part. You can see they didn't even finish beveling it properly.... It will wear a hole in your bone in its current configuration... In all honesty I am surprised that they haven't upgraded that part yet.

I just wanted to show off two pistols Mr. Garthwaite recently finished for me. They are twins and I am very excited. I have a few examples of Mr. Garthwaite's work and I have never been less than overwhelmed at his ability to blend artistry with function. Mr. Garthwaite was kind enough to send me these pictures.

Brief listing of work performed:

Heinie rear sight machined for one hand cycling
Garthwaite Gold Bead front sight
Medium solid trigger, tool steel sear, trigger job at 4.5 lbs
Barrel fitted for accuracy
Lowered and flared ejection port
Reliability work on barrel, feed ramp and extractor.
Hammer contoured for carry
MSH blended into frame and checkered at 20 lpi
Standard grip safety
Extended thumb safety machined for carry
Beveled Mag well
Black Matte Teflon finish

Thank you! Yes, they are perfect for this pistol and offer a positive grip but still keeps the GI double diamond look.:D They also have a little grey to them and look great. The pics don't show the grayish finish that Turnbul used...

Is the slide Ionbonded? I ask because I am planning on using that finish on a build currently. It will be used on a SS Series 70 repro.

R.E.Schoening
05-04-10, 09:27
Yep, the slide, and all of the carbon parts are done in IonBond's DLC...great stuff in my opinion.

I've had several 1911's done in DLC and all of them have held up great. I had a Colt Commander blued after customizing several years back...in an 8 hour period of sitting in my IWB while I built a fence I chewed through the bluing...I sent it to IonBond and the stuff held up great for the rest of the time that I owned it...all while riding in my IWB.

I had my current carry 1911 done in DLC 18 months ago when I finished it. It is carried almost daily, has been drawn from my leather IWB countless times, has had the slide cycled countless times, has been through one pistol class and was drawn from kydex during that class probably 150+ times, has roughly 1500 rounds through it...the finish still looks great...no second thoughts on going with IonBond!

DLC will show "wear" on high friction areas such as the slide and frame contact points, but holster wear and corrosion from sweat are non-existant!

Hope this helps,
Rob

D90king, is that black Baer a TRS also? What is it about Baer that you prefer over the Browns, NHC and Wilsons?

d90king

D90king, is that black Baer a TRS also? What is it about Baer that you prefer over the Browns, NHC and Wilsons?

The black Baer is a Super-Tac and its finished in what he calls Bear Coat. I have found Baers to be excellent values in the semi custom 1911 market. The fitting involved and the accuracy that they show really stands out. I don't think Les puts as much focus on cosmetics as some of the other makers do, but he more than makes up for it in the accuracy, fit and function department...

I like NH, Wilson and to some extent Browns. The Wilson I owned just never did anything for me. It was a well built 1911 but it just didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong it was a great pistol but I have / had so many 1911's that it really never saw the light of day and a friend loved it so I sold it to him. He loves it and shoots the snot out of it.

I had a Brown Kobra Carry shit the bed on me once in a class and I could never figure out what caused the failure. It only happened once, but once I get bit by a pistol its gone. I sold it and the guy who bought it has never had an issue with it.

I like Nighhawk pistols for the most part though I only have one at this point. It is an excellent pistol that is very reliable and and laser like accurate.

I have moved into the Full House custom builds these days and get much more enjoyment from building a pistol to my spec sheet rather than off the shelf pistols anymore... John Harrisons work is outstanding and I would rather spend a bit more and have him build me a pistol than buy off the rack anymore...

I will buy a Pro at some point down the road. SA builds outstanding pistols in the Custom Shop and I look forward to owning one at some point in time.

This one has been locked up in the safe for most of the last year due to other, newer 1911's coming along. It is however a very solid 1911 and one of my favorites. Too bad RRA went the direction that they did.

Thanks Dave, it is a little different. I wanted something a little more subtle than the original GRP rollmark, so I just had them put "GRP Recon" on the slide instead. It will be here on thursday so I will try and get a couple pictures of the rollmark that show up better.

This Springfield Mil Spec 1911 is my primary CCW gun.

I wanted to give it more of a retro WWI look, so I did some conservative mods.

Components used in the mods are:

10-8 Performance U-notch Rear Sight
Smith & Alexander Flat Checkered Mainspring Housing
Nighthawk Long Solid Trigger
Colt 1918 WWI-Style 1911 Checkered Walnut Grips

http://autoforex.biz/WWI-Springer1911-001.jpg
http://autoforex.biz/WWI-Springer1911-004.jpg

How it does look like a World War One era M1911:

Flat backstrap
Long trigger
Plain brown walnut diamond grips
GI non-skeletonized hammer
Non-beavertail grip safety
Small sights (not GI small, but Mil Spec small)
...in other words, most of the elements that give the outline or visual profile will be of the (almost)100-year-old variety

How it does NOT look like a World War One era M1911:

Stainless steel
Modern Springfield markings
Slanted cocking serrations
Lowered ejection port w/ scallop
No lanyard loop
Slightly larger sights with at least one dot remaining
Grip safety tang a little bigger, more like the WWII era M1911A1

Tuneups you don't see are:

Restaked the plunger tube. As some of you know, some 1911s have the plunger tube holes drilled straight through with no chamfering. I drilled relief openings with a dremel inside the frame and swaged out the plunger tube feet with a tool from Brownells.

Ran a grip bushing tap through the bushing holes; out of the box a couple of the holes were stripping grip bushings.

Polished the feed ramp with 2,000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a brass .45 ACP case; after that treatment all rounds have fed 100% over the last 600 rounds.

One very nice basic 1911. After my latest custom comes in, I think I will be doing something like this. I really like the "retro/basic" 1911's. Good job.

My newest rig, which was made by Bulman Gunleather and purchased from Jason Burton of Heirloom Precision.
Thanks again, Jason.

It is a Bulman TSA-HP with sewn loops

Ralston makes great leather, too. I have purchased 2 rigs from him and he has been very helpful.

Chuck we know better than that...

But if by chance you do grow up- you had better hurry up and get on Ned or Jason's wait list or it will be like trying to get a gun from "Rogers Precision.";)

Nice Champion! I really love the golf balling. Mate that to a set of Operator IIs and it would be perfect.

I found this 2009 model NIB and unfired just old stock, and at a price I could live with. The gun really surprised me. Fit and finish is excellent and the trigger pull was a nice surprise. The pistol is way more accurate than I am. I scored the Horned Lizard grips from a member of another board, and have plans to change out the sights in the near future. Later on it will get some upgrades internally but for now it will stay as is and receive a healthy lead diet.

Thanks for the kind words. :)

Beautiful! What and where did you get those grips?

Another John Harrison custom... with IonBond DLC black finish. This stuff really is like black hard chrome!
