New to me Defender done at Novak's.

The more and more pistols I have seen done at Novaks, the more I want a 1911 done by them. That is a beautiful little CCW piece.

willowofwisp... the front strap is serrated, which you can't see in the pics. It works well enough for me and didn't want to add checkering on top of serrations.

Serrated works for me! i just can't grip a plain front strap 1911 well..i love the 20lpi checkering

I'm with you... I LOVE 20 lpi checkering. That's what I've got on my TRP and I love how it bites into the hand. I find the 30 lpi checkering is ok, but not as "bitey" as I like. 25 lpi is pretty good for me. 20 lpi fantastic! :) Of course, as usual, to each his/her own preference.

I like the look of serrations and they do help, but 20 lpi is my favorite.

damn I'm jealous...the Pro is the only reason why i would ever sell/trade off my les baer. I would leave the gun totally stock except the rear sight change it to a 10-8.

I remember when my buddies dad got his pro..he waited 13 months for it and then the first day blew through a case a of american eagle with it..

God damn I love the Pro's. About the only thing I would change on it is to change out the rear sight for either a 10-8 or a Warren, undercut the trigger guard, and I wish it was 25lpi instead of 20, but it's a Pro lol I would deal hahaha.

Hey Quick Strike, what grips do you have on that beauty?

Hey Quick Strike, what grips do you have on that beauty?

http://www.vzgrips.com/index.php/component/virtuemart/?page=shop.browse&category_id=20

These grips with the 20 lpi checkering, feels kinda like holding a pine cone! I really like the thumb recess, makes reaching the mag release a lot easier.

Gonna take a buddy to shoot it so he can chip in on ammo. Hopefully the grips will discourage him so I get to shoot more.

Edit: Might have to look into those 10-8 sights or warrens. I would still like to keep the 3-dot configuration though.

Yes sir.. It's a heck of a gun and worth it. This one came at a premium, but they're settling down in price. I love my AR's, but this gun fits in very nicely and is a dream to shoot.

Looks like one of John Harrison's rear combat sights. I love the one he installed on my Colt Special Combat.

I had no use for an adjustable rear sight on what I consider to be defense gun.

That's a Novak white outline tritium night sight in the front.

Yup that's what it is..i was just tired of my adjustable sight really..thing would tear your hands up and i could always memorize where each load goes i shoot..i normally only shoot 185's anyways.

I see yours hangs off a bit..mine has a tiny gap in the back but hey it works

Yep... it hangs back a bit - a carry over from the placement of the original Boman adjustable sight. Gives me a longer sighting radius! :D

Nice piece. Overall well executed custom gun. Not really diggin' the thumb safety though. Sticks out to far for me. Just my thing though, if it works for you great.

I wish more mfgs would stick to a slick slide without all the gauding markings. Good luck.

The pistol was built by Tim Cronin at Grizzly. The attention to detail and quality is up there at the top. I was hesitant to post this so I could keep Lew and Tim to myself. Everytime you find a great smith with competitive pricing and reasonable turn around (5 months from conception to delivery) they blow-up, get busy and you wait 2 years for work.

Grizzly was great to work with, so they deserve a little showcase with this pistol.

I hear what you are saying. The same thing happened to me with Steve Morrison of MARS Armament. He was running very fast turn around times, then the surefire combat tactics article dropped and boom he has a ton of work. Though I am only on month 8 for my build and it looks like I will have it fairly soon (1 to 2 months probably). All in all, still not horribly bad for the quality you get from Steve.

more pics of this one

My pre-Mil Spec(the meu-soc-ish looking one) started its life out as an ugly bastardized used gun that some previous owner had done a horrible kitchen trigger job on. I purchased it, it had the stock Springfield ring hammer and scalloped grip safety. I replaced the ignition parts with a Berryhill ring hammer and some Ed brown parts. I replaced the grip safety with a King's grip safety. I then replaced the sights with some Millet MK I's, got a lanyard loopp MSH for it and a either Ed Brown or Wilson three hole trigger for it, i forget. The last thing i need for it is a decent ambi-safety.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/punchinout18/DSC06254-1.jpg
Also pictured is my SA Loaded. Got rid of the FLGR on the Loaded. Replaced the stock MSH with a Smith & Alexander Flat MSH with lanyard loop. I had removed the stock ambi safety for awhile and put a stock Springfield thumb safety in its place.

I apologize for the quality of the photos. Some more of my 1911's. I also have a US Property marked Colt M1911 from November of 1918 that I currently have no decent photos of. I'll take some and post them later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/punchinout18/PA1603852.jpg (the Mueschke safety sucked. I threw it out. Was an ordeal trying to get it fit. I really like the RIA and carry itevery day...those Filipino's make a great gun for the money. Aftermarket parts are a huge bitch to install.)

My very first 1911. Springfield GI. Added Bakelite grips and an EMC wide spur hammer to her.

John VanZyke of VZ and I are collaborating on some new grips being offered by VZ, the Frag grips. I've been using them every day now and I think it's a very viable pattern. I owe John a huge thank-you for working with me on this, or more accurately for allowing me to work with him on it. John is a good friend and, in business, a straight shooter of the highest order.

So... to help introduce the new grips, I did this Colt in Frag. Frag has not been as popular as Conamyds but in utility they are equal. Both have a quality of not being sticky to everything they touch, but, as a firing grasp is exerted, the gun becomes locked in.

As I got this one done, it passed the final test: "I need this. I wish I could keep it for my own"... :(

Right side shot….. all black. Manganese phosphate, then Gun Kote and bake.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13810522542.jpg

A little closer, showing the Frag pattern on the frontstrap and trigger. Yes, it was a trick getting it on the trigger! Trigger’s Frag grooves are Gun Koted for contrast. I was not about to put that much time into machining a trigger face and take a chance on it going unnoticed……
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13810522511.jpg

The muzzle. The barrel is a Kart, bushing started out as an EGW 80%-er. I got a recpoil spring plunger from Guncrafter Industries as I knew they had one with and extra-long end, enabling me to Frag it. I have always liked keeping the barrel, bushing, trigger and hammer light-colored on a dark gun. So these parts are all chromed on this one, except the Harrison Design trigger which was left bare.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13772500241.jpg

This one shows the Frag in pretty good detail—notice it is also on the mag realease (a Wilson Combat piece). Also, of course, my own ESPT (Extra Stout Plunger Tube).
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13846226741.jpg

The Chen magwell. I kept the pistol as dry as possible for pics; clolors will darken and even out with a proper light oiling.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13744626301.jpg

Showing the back end; STI grip safety, chromed, lightened hammer, textured slide rear, modified Yost rear sight….. I had this one around but I understand these are now available through John Harrison / Harrison Design. Ambi safety is a new design from Wilson Combat and very interesting. The two shafts don’t meet in the middle in a blade-and-slot config, each slot is halved length-wise and they overlap to make the full diameter—with a blade-and-slot-arrangement at each end. I think it is stronger but would like to do a little destructive testing to prove it. Anyway, very well made. I hold the WC stuff in very high regard as to quality and support.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/foto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13776092511.jpg

Better shot of the rear sight, the front deck is lowered a little and radiused to match the slide making for more positive one-handed racking.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/21017706021.jpg

The Chen MSH and magwell. It’s no small job doing a weld-on magwell but it becomes part of the pistol and looks great…… the utility of it hardly needs mention. http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/04062010/13726285991.jpg

And, the front.

I don't mind you asking at all..... other than you will probably think I'm obfuscating with this answer: I am so imprecise about keeping time on things it's hard to say for sure. More than eighty I think..... the magwell installation and perfecting the surfaces takes a ton of time. This one needed a few things corrected cosmetically just on account of the time period it's from I think-- the lines tended to be crooked, and mismatched side to side.

I know I used to figure that on a bowling pin gun, with compensator and made-from-scratch magwell, I had a good 140 hours into it.

http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee343/jonconsiglio/Forums/IMG_8023-Edit.jpg

To add to my previous post, I just received an email that my Nighthawk PDP Commander arrived. This will probably take the top spot in my 1911 carry line up.

• Diamond Black
• Rounded Butt similar to Wilson's offering
• Stippled/Smooth Coco Bolos
• Tan Gatorbacks
• 3.25 lb medium solid trigger
• Standard Straight 8's (should have went to ledged like my VBOB, but an easy fix)

Now, I noticed it didn't have the ball slide cuts like the images online. At first I was going to have them fix it, but I actually like it better. Then the plug, though the thick EGW Heinie, isn't as thick as the Heinie with the plug that fits around the bottom of the bushing. Ok with that too. Another odd thing is that the serial on my Talon is in the 9500 range where this is in the 4000's. Not an issue, but it got me curious. I guess they have the PDP frames set aside and pull them as needed. Interesting though.

So, for it coming this way, Nighthawk gave me $100 off. Currently, my main carry guns are a Nighthawk Talon II bobtail (about 75% of the time), a VBOB and sometimes a 229 SCT or a 226. I have a feeling, this will quickly replace the Talon and VBOB after a good 500 rounds. I'll run it at one of Paul Howe's classes later this year as well.

I'll get some better pics, these were sent to me by the dealer that ordered it for me - George at Gunslingers

One of the few 1911 makers whose work is obvious without needing a rollmark on the side. Much in the same way that you can ID a Swenson from a distance.

For whatever reason, the first thing I look at on a 1911 is grip safety fit. On some smiths/manufacturers I'm sometimes disappointed. Never with Chuck Rogers.

Thanks, it's my favorite 1911 out of the numerous ones I've owned in the past. The checkering could be nicer but since it has no effect on function I don't really care. I traded my Brown Kobra for it and some cash and have to say I'm not sorry I did. The Blueing on the TRS holds up better also. I have to say that the Baer TRS is the best value in quality 1911 out there. I've seen them as low as $1699 new.

Recently completed for a long-time customer..... a Springfield without tons of frills.

Barrel is a Kart, bushing is an EGW 80% that I bored, angle-bored, and sculpted. Pretty much all the stock internals were used except for changing to a Harrison trigger.

Rear sight-- one of John Harrison's with a little extra metal removed to give better access for using the sight to rack the slide.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/07082010/17712448891.jpg

Left side-- VZ thin grips supplied by the owner.

Chen magwell. from the top down.....
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/07082010/19603881981.jpg

The owner didn't want to replace "everything". We used the stock Springfield grip safety which was totally adequate. I would normally fit it tighter at the pivot but it was not so bad from the factory. I did however "raise" it quite a bit-- the limiting factor on these being that they are cored out hollow on the inside, so one needs to be careful not to go too far and strike air. Gave the whole thing a mottled texture..... just something I'm playing with.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/mediumfoto/picts/ulfls/07082010/19603882162.jpg

Chen magwell from the bottom..... TIG'd on. Welding is one of the few things I don't do here..... when I've got a guy who does it this good, no sense in doing it myself.
http://www.louderthanwords.us/smallfoto/picts/ulfls/07082010/17777016781.jpg

The MSH / backstrap checkering is ramped off at the bottom and rounded slightly. Checkering front and back is 18, not 20, LPI, just for the heck of it.

Here is a pic of my Springfield Micro-Compact that I carry concealed. I put the Ergo grips on it and Wilson night sights. It's a pretty good gun although a little heavy.

I got a good deal on this from a local shop. Only changes I have made are the coyote Gunner Grips and the 10-8 grip screws. I have not yet shot it but I am confident it will do what I expect of it. Overall, I am very very happy with my new addition!!

I'm actually pricing out what it will cost me to build a entirely new slide/barrel assembly and just keep the SA TRP "upper", if you will, in the safe. I looked into replacing the rear sight and I can't find anything I like. I always use Heine Straight 8s on all my guns, so I may just put together a nice top for this gun and run it hard with no worries of fancy adjustable sights breaking...

Very very nice! beautiful gun. If that is a novak cut rear I would just replace the sights. I wouldn't buy a completely new top end unless you really want it. I've been pretty happy with my stock SA1911's performance. Plus "if" anything ever happens you can send it back to SA as is, their CS is top notch.

GREAT gun!

That's not a Novak cut.

Here is 1 option for you:

http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?p=2681517

I went to his personal website and do not see it listed (I may have missed it) - but if you PM him there or email him, I'm sure he can give you all the info to send your slide in.

If I come across another full rail Operator again, I may buy it. If I get 1, I am thinking of sending it to Nighthawk. I like their adjustable sights because they have white around the tritium instead of silver.

I was informed on m1911 forums that it is the HD-001 rear sight. If you go to the services page I believe it is sight work package #120. The rear sight itself can be bought on Brownell's for $90.

As others have stated, it's not a Novak cut. Believe me, if it was I would swap the sights and run the thing! :) I believe it is a Bo Mar Adjustable cut. My main reason for buying the new upper was to have the fun of fitting it all myself. I have built one other 1911 and it was truly fun. I am using this as a reason to do it again.

If you are talking about the Bomar style sights, they typically don't hold up well from any manufacturer. I just lost the little windage nut on my Kimber Target. It is 10 years old so I guess I can't complain too much.

Streamlight makes a TLR-1 and a TLR-1s, the s model strobes. You quickly click the instant on lever twice and then hold and it will strobe until you let off the toggle switch. IMO surefire weapon lights are not worth the almost double price difference between a Streamlight TLR vs X series from surefire. Now with that said i carry a Surefire hand held daily :neo:

This is MD# 003, which I think I have posted pictures of previously. However, I sent the gun back to Mr. Davis to have him fit a Wilson thumb safety (single side) since I prefer that safety to the Wilson ambi-safety that was on it before (still have the ambi). Mr. Davis took the liberty of polishing all of the parts (again) and touching up the slide flats and from what I can tell going back over every aspect of this gun.

When I sent the gun back to him, it had somewhere over 1000 rounds through it. It had also accumulated some scratches on the slide flats as well as some other handling marks. It now looks better than ever!

The best part about this particular gun might be the trigger. It is amazing! Combine the light, crisp trigger pull with the Heinie sights and lock the gun in with the mini-scallops, this gun shoots fast and accurate. I have shot my fastest times on Todd Green's F.A.S.T. drill with this gun (http://pistol-training.com/drills/fast-fundamentals-accuracy-speed-test). The Nowlin barrel that Matt fit in this gun stacks them in one hole as long as I do my part.

Just got my Series 70 slide back from Dave Berryhill. I asked him to dovetail the front of the slide and install a gold bead sight. Also install one of his MEUSOC replica rear sights. Finally, fit a new barrel bushing, cut the barrel flush, and recrown it. I should of had him massage the ejection port a bit but it totally slipped my mind. Sorry the pics aren't that great but the work is done perfectly and Dave was great throughout the decision making and work process!

Picked up this little hotrod (Pro TLE/RL II) for $700 & change back in June.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc305/The_War_Wagon/Parts/Kimber1.jpg

So the Schwartz safety is diconnected :D, and the frame has been custom bobbed, but it's had about 2k rounds put through it, and the finish is PAINTED at this point, and rough in spots.

I owned it in THIS condition for about 36 hours. It was off to my 'Smitty/FFL for some new McCormick slim grips, a new Wolff 16lb power spring, and a Wilson slimline abidextrous safety. After THAT, it was THEN off to Amelon Coatings in VA, for some CERAKOTING!

Since this was my first experience with CERAKOTE, I decided to keep it simple - graphite black. Dan did an excellent job with it there, and then got it back to me GTG.

And here's what it looks like NOW!

Thanks, I figured if I only have one 1911 it may as well be a quality piece. However, I can see another Baer TRS in the future to keep the one I already have company. :dance3:

The barrel is by storm lake. Needed a bit of fitting for my TRP though.

I won't lie, your avatar is the inspiration for this gun lol

Ironic thing is, this is my first post here on m4c... and it is to post up a picture of my 1911's

First up is my TRP Operator with a full rail. I hunted this one down for over a year, it has a bull barrel, x300 and Gunner Grips. I have started to make holsters for my guns since I couldn't get either of my two models from Raven.

http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr3/drew_frazer/holsters/trp1.jpg

Next up is my Springfield Lightweight Champion Operator. I love this one, it shoots great. I made the grips and holster myself. I hope to bobtail it, and checker the front strap. I might flush cut and crown the barrel just for looks... time will tell.

Thanks guys!
I hope the owner likes it.

The rear sight is a Heinie Slant-Pro, as specified by the owner.
The grips are Cocobolo, I think.

The ASYM ammo is the best I've seen and used! Produced by Stan Chen, one of the premier 1911 smiffs in the world.

Notice the grip safety fit? I welded the frame and re-fit the grip safety.
