Sweet, I love showing off my 1911s! Both Kimbers obviously, the 5" went off to tripp research for hard chrome a couple years back since the original finish was worthless and I'm not a big fan of rust. The UCII is my carry gun currently, until my G26 is ready to go.

Someday I'd like to send this one off to Hilton.
This is my Smith and Wesson 1911.
In Massachusetts handguns have to be approved by the attorney general for sale so I could not buy a Kimber or Springfield.
Smith and Wesson offered the first MA legal 1911 and I pre-ordered one right away. Unfortunately I did not wait for a model with a light rail.
So anyways, here it is SW1911 with factory Novak sights and (2) Wilson Combat eight round magazine.
http://media.militaryphotos.net/photos/albums/thesaint2284/aia.jpg
I added a Hogue full wraparound grip and (2) ten round McCormick magazines.
I like the Hogue wraparound grips, they allow me to handle the recoil extremely well.
In the future I will add a new mainspring housing with an recessed lanyard loop;and maybe a Safariland 9004:D

It probably just needs a new mag spring. I'm told WC ten round mags are notorious for wearing out springs, especially if you leave them loaded for long periods of time.
Haven't had any problems with my 8 rounder's.
I have been using (2) Wilson Combat eight round magazines with 500 rounds each and have not had any magazine related problems.
I've used only Wilson 8 rounders. Very little problem with them. They function great. Like most others, the only problem that I have is when the spring is weak, it won't lock the gun open on the last round.

Nice Rock River 1911. It looks well used.
Which model is it?
Did you do the mods to the magwell?

One of mine by Don Williams at The Action Works, scallops by Chuck Rogers. It doesn't look quite this nice anymore, it has been run hard and it has a liitle holster wear but it still shoots better than I can.
Steve.
Edited to add sorry cant get the pic to show here's a link

Same Bigbore, I’m not a paying advertiser so I’m posting incognito, but don’t want to be called a troll, so I stuck with the name which, those who know, know….
In the last few years I’ve had RRA make batches of 1911s to my spec, which were pretty basic, and not as tight as their standard 1911s.
Everything was fit nice but the edge of the thumb safety wasn’t as comfortable as I wanted, so I took a file to it and reshaped it to my boney hand. It came with a standard flat MSH, but I installed and ground the extended S&A MSH/magwell as I wanted. I say “ground” because it was “ground” and not “fit”. If you like clean meaningless lines on a 1911, you’ll hate this, my concern is function.
I replaced the stock barrel/bushing with a 6” KART barrel and bushing that I “fit” to the slide for the suppressor. It looks like hell, has a ton of holster wear(I practice from the holster), but it works great. I’ve basically retired from 1911 shooting (my wrist can’t take it), but I’m doing a lot of shooting with my weak hand now, and the suppressor really reduces the recoil making it pleasant to shoot again.
The light rail came from Yost-Bonitz, and its another recent add on.

Nice set up Steve.
I still wish Crimson Trace would offer their grips with no angle cut at the bottom. Although only for looks, I think they'd look alot better if they fit flush against an S&A magwell.
Edit to fix dumbness.
bigbore,
It looks like good, honest wear.
I've heard that Rock River builds their 1911s tight, but I have never seen one to know. I have also heard that they are too often over looked.
I like the way that you've set it up. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Jim

Yes, you probably figured out who the internet persona I use on the other forum is when you saw my pistol. Please don't hold it against me! I just troll over there and argue these days....
I have a second, simpler 1911 based on a Series 70 Reissue coming before October, this time built by Jason Burton at Yost Bonitz. I guarantee you will see pictures, as this is part of a new project there....I have probably said too much already.

Damn Glock fan Moderators. :p
Here’s my recently de-Schwartz-ified TLE II. It’s nothing special.
It’s an earlier version with internal extractor. I recently got rid of the Schwartz type firing pin safety. After hacking through the Mepro rear, I replaced the rear sight with a Novak plain 0.125 rear. I also replaced the Kimber two-piece full-length guide rod and plug with Ed Brown units.

He sent me an old Colt GI frame and a new, in-the-wrapper Colt GI contract slide. He wanted front cocking serrations added but other than that, it's an "old style" MEU(SOC) replica with a Bar Sto barrel.
My PRO with YoBo sight and rail, and CTC lasergrips. Well used!

A $10 soldering iron mounted in a vise. I seperated the plastic from from the metal receiver. It took me about 2hrs to grind the grip down and stipple it. I wanted the grip a little smaller like the SVI Scott grip. But those cost $160 and up.

My other Pro. The Krylon hides a bit of wear. After the image was taken, I stripped the paint from the trigger. It has most of my usual modifications. I use Gunner Grips on this pistol for additional traction, in addition to the fact that I can only afford one set of Crimson Trace grips.

My daily carry gun. One of those fussy high dollar custom 1911s that are too tight to function reliably....
Almost 20,000 rounds through her, most of those in training courses held outdoors in mud, rain, sand, etc. 1 malfuction in all that time, a stovepipe on round number 3 of the 500 round breakin period the factory reccomended for the weapon, and that was probably my fault. Now that she is almost broken in, I can fire with only two fingers and she will STILL run.
Best handgun I have ever bought....Except for the frontstrap checkering.
If I had it to do over, I would get an all blued pistol and I would skip the checkering. All it does is serve to make your hands sore during a training class, requiring you to tape up your fingers like some sort of tactical mummy to continue.

That's a really nice pistol.
Maybe I am just old fashioned, but I like lightly customized 1911s with spur hammers. Frankly, if the GI style grip safety didn't tear a hole in my hand I would probably carry one of those.

Thanks. It may look like a pick up truck, but it shoots and runs like a Ferrari. Larry rounded all the edges on this pistol included the GI grip safety. It is very comfortable to shoot, 200 rounds in 2 - 3 hrs is no problem. Yeah, I know that's not much, but this gun being what it is, I don't want to abuse it. :)
At one point we discussed the option of fitting a beavertail to the gun if I didn't like the GI grip safety, I'm glad I decided against that.

Yes, that's the RRA I've been playing with the whole time. I think the first run of Adco guns had S&A grip safeties and Hienie sights, while the rest had Novaks and Ed Brown safeties.
The beater is a gun I got in a trade with a Norinco slide and frame, with nearly everything else changed out for Ed Brown parts. The beavertail fit is a real PITA, because whoever did it just cut the frame tangs without bothering to blend it at all. I recently added the S&A magwell, and it could use a nice blending to the frame as well.

Wes, when did you buy that Colt?
Several months ago.
I saw it at a local shop and traded my dust-collecting 92FS for it
straight up. Looked like a perfect project gun to learn on. Now
that I know what hammer bite is, I'll probably buy the Ed Brown
BT and jig from Brownells and start learning.

Did you ever find a college with a gunsmith program?
Yavapai Community College. They have a Gunsmith Certificate and Associates program.
They're right over the hill from me in Prescott, half hour away. Not attending yet, we'll see.

Is your Baer a two tone?

Finally finished rebuilding my Kimber Custom II. I'm kind of partial to Hilton Yam's work on 1911's and that's pretty obvious in my parts selection.
Thank you to all the gunsmith's that post on these forums for sharing their profound knowledge and giving us common Joe do-it-yourselfers confidence and inspiration.
Parts list:
Basic Kimber Custom II frame, slide and barrel
EGW 'smith fit bushing, thick flange, very solid lock-up
Fusion GI recoil plug and guide rod with Wolff 18.5# recoil spring
Fusion serated magazine catch, Wolff reduced power spring
Wilson extended slide stop, reprofiled. This was an extra I had laying around and don't know if I'll like it or not. I also refinished the factory stop just in case. I was trying to keep the serated theme going.
Mars armament Gen II mainspring housing/magwell with recessed laynard loop and Chuck Rogers style golfball dimples.
Simonich/Strider Gunner grips with factory Colt grip screws that fit a .45 case rim. Not really important but I dig 'em. I do wish I hadn't did the mag release cut out but oh well, live and learn.
Chip McCormick high rise grip saftey, welded up to work with series 2 firing pin safety. A major PIA.
10-8 Performance solid trigger with fixed overtravel stop.
10-8 Performance U notch rear sight for Kimber sight cut.
SDM 14K gold bead front sight, blended to frame radius.
The trigger was excellent from the factory so those parts were left alone. Dave Berryhill's FCG will be used when the time comes.
Finish is matte black GunKote over parkerizing.
The pics don't really show how hard I worked on dehorning but it was alot. I spent more time on this than any thing else.
I hope you enjoy the pics. Ichiro or Shelby I am not.

OK, what makes it "special"?
The stippled top, French Edges, Golfball frontstrap, Heinie sights, EGW (?) bushing, funky blended/flattened beavertail, angled MSH, chamfered and recessed slide stop pin hole, ball cuts on slide, plus many internals I can't spot.
I don't understand how that beavertail safety works if at all
I only know (I think) because of his "desert" gun that's popular on 1911forums.com.
I'm not talking about that gun, I'm talking about the Wilson CQB "special ops" as described in the post I quoted and shown in the linked pictures.

That was a "Limited Edition" gun that Wilson came out with 4-5 years ago. They only made a certain amount of them and they came with SF markings & special serial numbers.
A local guy has one and it's very nice.
It seemed mostly aimed at the collector market.

So no real functional differences, just the markings and such?
So no real functional differences, just the markings and such?
I think so, but I've only handled one for a few minutes.
I did not notice anything else special about it.
The one I've handled was very well fit so maybe WC spent more time on each one considering it was a special addition gun.
Thats just a guess though.
I would say very few of these guns get shot.

That is one mean looking combat pistol!Very nice!
Thanks but it's not really a combat pistol. Mostly stock and out of the first 200 rounds I've put through it, I was getting FTRB- maybe 6 or 7 and I don't know why. I've got an EGW trigger for it but have yet to find time to sit down and install it. No set screw- just a permanent stop on the rear to file, test, file, test, etc.
have you tried different mags. Or maybe even polishing the feedramp. I've found that seems to help if the FTRB is caused by a misfeed. Also what type of ammo are you running. It is a very nice shooter. I was thinking of adding a light rail on my TRP as well.
One more question i would like to ask, does the rail fit standard holsters still or do you need a specific holster to fit that rail.
Thanks

It supposedly fits in most holsters but I don't have any at the moment to check. It will basically be a range and nightstand gun. I polished the feedramp and 100 rounds of WWB tore it all to hell... I may have had 1 more FTRB in that 100 rounds and that was one of the first shots out of a fresh mag.
:D I wont say it.
Hey, I always said it was a good $1500 gun. I just found one for $1500 when I happened to have $1500 sitting around.;)
Now I just need to find the time to photograph and post my review comparing the CQB, to the 18, to the Special Forces. guess that'll probably be after the first of the year at this rate though.
I'll be shooting the CQB for the first time in an IDPA match this weekend. We'll see how it goes.
SuicideHz, good call on buying the SA PX9109L. I have always considered it the best 1911 available below $1,200.
You also did some smart upgrades. You addressed the only issues that really need it ( Getting rid of the ILS system & heavy spring). Adding the Dawson rail was also a smart move. I would still ditch the full length guide rod though if were my gun.
Now just lube that baby up, it looks dry as hell.
Good job.

I would still suggest getting that front sight pinned in place. That was my only true bitch with WC. They seemingly would not do it (Even after I asked twice), and mine came loose every 1,000 rounds like clockwork.
Other than that I was very pleased with my CQB.

Thanks for the compliments Dinger. I like to keep her dry until I go shooting because I just love to cuddle with her on the couch and the oil and the microfiber just don't get along!
I've got a GI rod and plug on the way. I've also got a solid EGW trigger with built in solid stop that I need to fit. I replaced the Main Spring with a lighter 19lb. spring but I may put a heavier one in when I install the EGW firing pin stop I have. I plan on doing that little trick where it's barely chamfered 45d and that 135d edge is slightly rounded.
Oh, and it needs the 10-8/Yost sight like STS has pictured. My rear dots are brighter than the front!
I'm sorry to say I installed that rail slightly off. It fit either perfectly flush on the dust cover and up against the triggerguard but slightly crooked or straight and not really flush with the dustcover or triggerguard. When I finally tightened it down after bedding it with JB Weld, it was able to twist into the BAD position. Don't ask me why or how in the hell I was able to lock it down tight EITHER way. I was able to get it right the 2 times I test fit it after drilling and tapping.
I wasn't about to tear it off and start figuring out if the triggerguard is slightly off center or if the Dawson is slightly off.
Sorry...

Very nice pistol. It doesn't look crooked or slightly off on the pictures. You got me thinking of putting that on a loaded SA and soldering it in place after tapping and drilling. The reason i asked if you knew if it would fit standard holsters. I have a Safariland 6004 and was wondering if it would fit in that. I know that it won't fit in a serpa or fobus.
10-8 contains a thread about either the Vickers or the 10-8 NH (?) and it talks about which holsters will fit the SF/Dawson combo.
Here are a few more kinda blurry pictures I just snapped. I installed the EGW trigger last night. It required fitting on top, bottom and both sides. It took a lot of Sharpie and filing- about 90 minute's worth to get it right. There is almost zero lateral or up-down movement.

SuicideHz

Here is a link for that reduced radius FPS.
http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.php?13824-EGW-FP-Stop&highlight=firing+stop+radius
I started with the thumb safety which was not hard to adjust.
I moved on to the hammer which I marked and began to file. I was able to shape with the file and sandpaper strips into a shape that I liked.
29360
I wanted the magazine well to have a softer shape where the corner angles away from the bottom of the grip. This filing proved to be a lot of work moving the well
along the file set at an angle and then shoe shining 220 and 400 grit paper to smooth the shape.
29361
The filing of the frame took more courage, but the Jig does work to radius the frame as expected, but the grip
still would not fit. I discovered that the inside radius of the grip needed to be worked with the Jig and
400 grit paper. This just about killed my thumb forcing the cut with numerous changes of 400 grit paper.
29363
As if this grip safety wasn’t difficult enough up to now the next part of blending the frame into the curves of the grip is a real challenge.
I was wrapping the 220 and 400 grit paper around various round objects to shape the curves.
This is where the smiths really earn their fee for this modification.
Alan Tanaka really cleaned up the grip safety. I asked him what he thought of my efforts... he said "it's ok" with the tone of voice that it could be better.
I'm glad that he knew what to do.
He did the checkering, blended the mag well and made the sight cuts.
29362
I only wanted a mild dehorn and used round and flat stones.
29364
I do like the way the hammer and magwell turned out. I had a 'set back' during assembly where the hammer was not cut back enough to clear the safety recess.
So I had to alter it , reparkerize and reassemble. I do like the retro look of the spur hammer
and like this bobbed shape. I lowered the hammer hooks to .025 which gave a clean break about 4.5 pounds.
I wondered how the Parkerizing would turn out since I had read of numerous disasters, but it was not hard.
Do have a pot of hot water for the pre-Park and another pot of hot water for post-Park before using the WD-40 to finish.
Thanks for your attention.

Suicide, where did you get those grips?
I just opened up the SA case and there they were... They are darker than most I see. I really like them but don't want to tear them up. I have another set on the way.
Linea- I was just curious about the EGW FPS, but thanks! ;)
OK, what makes it "special"?
rob s - The word Special comes from Special Operations. The firearm pictured is a faithful reproduction of the limited edition U.S. Army Special Forces handgun that was offerd from Wilson Combat in 1995.
There were only a hundred such handguns produced. I always wanted one, however could not afford one in 1995 (they were $1,950.00 in 1995 dollars).
Frank Robbins at Wilson Combat worked with me in 2003 to obtained that specific firearm using today's technology. Frank had a catalog from 1995 and had all the details about the gun.
Mine was hand-built to those specs. However, mine has the much better combat pyramid sights and the Armor-Tuff finish.
Unfortunately, Frank Robbins was killed in an automobile accident in December of 2004. Frank was a nice man and a pleasure to work with. He will be missed.

Thanks Olds! She's wearing her 10-8 sights now. She's all about "being pretty" ;)
After a lot of research and looking at pics, I have decided I really like the dawson rail vs. an integral rail. The dawson rail IMO preserves the great lines of the 1911 while of course offering the light mounting capability. My next one will have a dawson.
Suicide- maybe I missed it, but who made that trigger? Do you like it better than a standard one? It looks pretty good I think.

Thanks. It's an EGW trigger from Brownell's (it's their $30.00 one.) It's got an almost flat face and feels nice to me. I suppose if you are too used to a standard 1911 trigger, it will take some getting used to but I like it. It needs to be fitted though and took me about an hour and a half total (including sandblasting the surface back to a dull color.)
Thanks, I may just have to try one out...

I hadn't heard of them before either, but I do know the names of the gunsmiths.
They do have a very good reputation in the industry!
Pistol Dynamics is owned by Paul Liebenberg, one of the most sought after pistolsmith and innovative designer. His career started with Pachmayr Gun Works where he built many custom 1911s. He built the pistols for Ross Seyfried, who was one of the early champions of IPSC, yes IPSC, before there was a USPSA. Pachymayr guns were used by many early pioneers of combat shooting sport and tactical training. People like Jeff Cooper, Ray Chapman, Ken Hackathorn and many others shot Pachmayr guns, many were built by Paul Liebenberg. The classic Pachmayr Combat Special is the most copied style of 1911 custom work. When Liebenberg left PGW, he worked briefly for S&W then started his own company Pistol Dynamics.

I like your even better. More practical i would think. It also has a more classic look to it that won't easily age with time.

I have those same grips on my EB SF that's on me right now. Do you find that the grip screws sticking out like that annoy you? I have been trying to find something more low profile but still a slotted head to make them a little more flush.
Nice Baer. I like the grips are those the green micarta grips. They have a bit of red in them i think.

rob_s - I'm not a huge fan of the way they screw heads stick up but I'm getting used to it. They are thinner grips so I can see why they do but I would also be interested in a set of thin, slotted grip screws if you find some.
snacks - They are the green/black linen. The hint of red is from the tablecloth. (not normall there we had a party :D ) I really like the color against the blued finish. Once I wear the bluing I'll send this off for either E-Treat or some type of melonite finish.

Some close up shots of a Colt that Paul Liebenberg built for a friend of mine. The rear sight is not a Novak, it's Paul's creation. Also notice the uniquely contoured grip safety, thumb safety, square trigger guard and the slide stop.
great pics Sam, that is nice. Looks like a more subtle version (all blue, fixed sights) of Liebenberg's current Combat Special Classic offering.
This is a 1991-A1 that I committed some smithing on. :)

And somehow came up with this:

Is your Baer a two tone?
Just noticed your post as I was doing some drooling....
Yes, it's a two tone. Blued slide, stainless frame.
If I had it to do over again, I would get an all blued gun with no checkering.

Chicom I know, but I found the forged frame and slide very appealing....other than the serial # I had Alex Hamilton of 10 ring precision remove every marking from the frame and slide, Kart NM barrel, match bushing, Videcki trigger, Wilson slide stop, CMC mag release. David, I keep thinking we've met-- have we? Glad you like the pics.
Top pic-- top, a restored beater that we think maybe had even been through a fire, although hardnesses and all seemed fine. It had been refinished over some pitting. Bottom, a full-on project that was part of my display at the LTW booth at SHOT this year, a stainless Colt, but I mean all stainless. Sights are made by me from stainless too. Pistol made black by tungsten DLC.
Middle pic-- just finished this one, and like both guns in the top pic, the rear sight has a deepened, serrated and slightly forward-slanted hook for one-handed racking on whatever is handy.
Bottom pic, same gun as in the middle, showing a lanyard attachment point that is just two slots, one milled from the back and one from the bottom, that meet in the middle. Just big enough to fiddle a piece of paracord through but a zip tie can also be used for a quick hookup to.... your saddle or whatever:D

Right on, I was just checking 'cause (from what I could see) it looked like the finish is still in good shape. Mine is less than a year also and the finish is still near-perfect, and it seems like the main thing people complain about is the finish not holding up.

The TLE-RL is what I carry for SRT thus the holster wear. I can't tell you how many holster presentations that thing has been through. I've had it since the academy. ( I have to carry a Glock 22 for regular duty). The TLE is what I carry off-duty. I love both of these guns and have had zero malfunctions with both. I even have the external extractor on the RL.
Just thought I would throw mine out there to add to the collection. Stay safe and watch your six.

HI utarch00, I really like the PT1911 Taurus, especially the price; but most of all you get a solid well build semi-custom “race-gun” (if you will) that has a lifetime warranty without having to spend twice the money to get there. I bought this Taurus .45 and a SA-XD and I like them both.
