I'm new to the world of SBRs and suppressors, but am looking at SBR'ing one of my lowers and I've pretty much decided on a 12-12.5" barrel.

My question is this: When I get around to getting a suppressor for it ($400 in tax stamps damn!) What suppressor would you guys reccomend that would not make the barrel + suppressor any longer than my 16" upper?

You will probably want to go with a reflex type suppressor, like an AAC spr. I believe those were recently discontinued. I am not very affluent on Ops Inc. but they sit further back on a collar on the barrel.

AAC or Surefire Mini?

Look into the Ops Inc suppressors. Reflex design like the AAC (or should I say, the AAC is like the Ops Inc. ;)) but cheaper and plenty of options (for length) to chose from depending on what your application for the suppressor is.

my planned 12.5" will be with an SPR/M4 and the DD mk18 RIS that I have. there will be about a quarter inch between the back of the suppressor and the front of the rail with that setup.

A full size can really doesn't add much more than 16" to the barrel length but it provides a ton more suppression than a Mini suppressor. Well worth the tradeoff.

nimdabew, that is something I am looking at too.

As far as overall length, I would say my objective would be that the 12.5" plus suppressor should be no longer than a 16" plus an A2 flash hider.

If I can get a full size instead of mini, not add a ton of weight, and still meet that completely pulled-out-of-my-ass requirement, then I'm all in.

Shown is 11.5 Bravo Co LW CL 1 in 7, Apex handguard, SPR M4 and 51T mount, DD low profile gas block, ACOG TA01NSN, Colt A3 with Colt BCG & a Pmag 20.

Overall feels and handles like a 16" carbine, and shoots like a 20" rifle!

I am going to be chopping my 16" M4 barrel for a pistol in the next few weeks hopefully. I will post pictures once the project is complete.

You can do like I did and get the SF 556-212. It only adds 4.3" to the weapon.

And don't believe the hype in that link. You can get the dark earth version from other vendors. The mini and micro are not supposed to be used on bbls less than 14.5" (even though SF's own site shows it on an 11.5 in the photo). The 212 was the next shortest can from them.

Get a Surefire Mini. I plan on making that transition down the road myself.

Surefire Mini
OPS Inc M4M or 14th

The OAL is going to be shorter with the OPS units, especially the M4M, but that upper becomes a mostly dedicated suppressor host in terms of function. If you're looking at part time suppressed, then the Mini (not micro) SF is really the best looking option because of that amazing RTZ.

The OPS 14th are great since it's a full size can in terms of performance but adds the same length as the micro cans, BUT, you get full size can weight and all the hassles of the OPS barrel setups.
