I have had the opportunity to work with the greats in this world.
This gun is for one of the biggest names in this community he asked me to do it for him and it was one of the best things I have done in some time.
It will be a teaching tool for him for years to come and I got a lot out of it in the proses.

The gun started out life as a Daniel Defense carbine and I cut it all away.

I spent time on paper with this gun that cannot be counted the time on gun its self is epic.

Magnificent. I wouldn't have even known what to expect from a project like this, but the work is absolutely first-rate, Joe.

Such a neat idea! That should be such a help, when teaching how malfunctions occur, and how to clear them.

As always, great looking work.

I can only imagine the amount of time in planning and then the hours of mill work.

Well done Joe.

Joe, outstanding work as always. Cuts look very clean, and color on the components adds a nice effect.

Joe did this for me at my request as I thought it would be a very cool addition to my collection - you have to find the right person to do this kind of work as it takes alot of planning and requires everything to be thought out in a way that is functional and effective

Joe took the challenge and did a great job - to be honest it turned out better than either one of us expected; I actually learned a few things as did Joe and I thought we had this weapon figured out inside and out!!

Kudos to Joe for an outstanding effort and rising to the challenge - the results speak for themselves

Cheers

At first I thought, "Holy shit, he did this to a Daniel Defense carbine? What, there was no Oly, Del-Ton, DPMS, Frankenbuild to sacrifice for the sake of education?" LOL Then I understood when Mr. Vickers chimed in. Great job, would love to see this in person.

Why the slot on the left side of the upper?

Great idea for an instructionional tool Mr. Vickers and Mr. Smith that sir is a 'butchered' (I mean that in the best way) work if art! I like the color contrast to highlight the the operation of various mechanical interfaces on the rifle.

Mr. Smith your next cutaway should be a GAU-8. ;)

Why the slot on the left side of the upper?

Likely so one can see the bolt cam into battery via the cam pin.

Larry Vickers

One thing to keep in mind is this was the first cutaway M4 style rifle that Joe ever did so lessons were learned and if he did another I am sure some cuts would stay the same, some would be deleted, and some new cuts would appear

That is the nature of this kind of work

Either way it turned out very nice for a first effort!!

Cheers

Awesome use of different coloration so things are easier to see and understand.

That's way cool, man! No better way to get a feel for how things work in this rifle. Even disassembling the rifle and reassembling sometimes doesn't give you a total picture of how things work together like that.

That is perhaps the nicest cutaway I've ever seen-- certainly, by far, the nicest AR cutaway. I did one for myself 6 years ago that I use for pics for classes-- but my approach was much more "utilitarian". Yours outclasses mine by a long shot!

Take a look at this US Army video, starting at about 7:00 in. (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3139864140380291451&ei=ySGSSbnoFozuqAOUyeGPDQ&q=xm16e1)

That is beautiful. I've wanted one exactly like that ever since using one in Colt's school that they had as part of the class.

Your example of work looks exactly as good or, likely, nicer than what Colt had there.
