The carbine is a S&W MP15. I haven't located the answer in the search function so help me out here. Can I move the safety selector switch so the lever is on the right side of the receiver or is it necessary to buy a new ambi selector?

You'll need to buy an ambi selector. The spring and detent (and the channels for them on the selector itself) are only on one side. It will not function if you attempt to insert it the other way.

IMO the best ambi selector hands down is the battle arms development BAD-ASS. http://www.battlearmsdevelopment.com/badass.php

Every rifle I own has one.

Some makers are making the selectors so they can be reversed. Pull it out and see if it's cut on both ends.

Contact Battle Arms and see about one of their selectors. They are hands down the best on the market.

I've never see one cut for either side, but if you want lefty and not ambi get the bad ass with an endcap.

BADASS, not only for its ambidextrous-ness, but for its wide variety of lever configurations and its machining, which is much more precise than the stuff that comes in a typical LPK.

I you want a non-ambi KISS selector, get a Colt one with the longer grip surface...they are reversible

I have a Colt 6920 that was made in late 2006. The selector lever is cut so that it's reversible. It's not any longer than normal. IF you pull the lever out, you can see where it's cut on both sides so the detent will work if it is placed on the right.

It's currently on the right side, as my son is a lefty.

Most selector levers aren't cut this way. With that in mind, I'd get one of the Battle Arms levers.

Well I'm a little late since you already ordered the BADASS, but for anyone else with a similar question you can get a reversible Colt selector here: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=4902/Product/FIRE-CONTROL-SELECTOR. I'm a lefty and really like the Colt reversible selector.
