Help identify this WW2 vehicle

My gramps (top pic, foreground/bottom pic on the left) was in the 93rd Field Artillery Div in WW2, and tore though Italy & Germany.

I would like to know more about the vehicle in the background, what the heck is it? It's a weird open bed vehicle, if remember his stories correctly.
