Identify this seed

I can't figure out what this is despite its obvious commonplace here in East Texas. It's very aromatic; any help?

Looks like a Hickory Nut to me.

Maples have 'Helicopter' seeds, not nuts.

The warm Winter/early Spring has thrown some of natures time lines off this year.

90% certain it dropped from a black walnut tree. I have several trees on my property; they litter the groung. Underneath the green outer shell (pain in the butt to remove said green shell and it will stain the hell out of your hands) is the typical walnut shell with walnut inside.

Black waknuts are very tasty, FYI.

OP, if you are curious, peel the fruit off the outside of the nut and then crack it open.

My dendrology isn't flawless but I can identify major tree types and their fruits with a pretty high degree of accuracy. I may not tell you whether it is a pignut or a mockernut or a shagbark hickory nut without my guide book but I am confident it is a hickory nut.

My previous employement and my outdoor recreational pursuits put my time spent in the woods in years. I ain't perfect but I can get the major stuff right.

I used to love throwing those as the neighbor's down the road's asshole dog when I was a Kid. Other neighbor had two Black Walnut Trees, they were all over the roadside smashed into the pavement every fall.
