View Full Version : Are All Brands of AR-15 Field Repair Kits Created Equal?

I have been looking for a field repair kit, and have been finding that the most abundantly available brands are DPMS and BM, but I also saw a CMMG and some sites selling kits without listing the brand. I have been on this site long enough to know the general consensus regarding those manufacturer's rifles; what about their parts kits? What other choices are there?

Knowing the questionable manufacturers build thier rifles from the stuff in thier parts kits should give you an idea on that.

You could build your own feild kit easily enough by obtaining things like a LPK with or without pistol grip and then whatever little sundries you think you want as individual parts from the manufacturer of your choice.

Have you checked G&R and BCM?
They have partial packs of springs or pins or detents, etc. that could be gathered together to form a kit.
PSA also has a couple offerings if they are someplace you go.

May be of use to search places using keyword 'rebuild kit' rather than 'feild repair kit' BTW as repair kits are comparatively fairly common and easy to pick and choose from.

You're probably going to end up getting a few individual pieces seperately regardless of where you source the parts as many field kits will come with one or two items short in what you think you need/want and probably have one or two items you don't think you need/want.
It still all boils down to what you think you need in such a kit, not neccisarily exactly what comes in a 2mil ziplock bag off a shelf.

Palmetto State Armory and perhaps Ergo make the better ones it seems.

What do you anticipate you need in your repair kit?

Personally, I just piece these things out from BCM or Brownells, ordering springs and stuff when I buy other items so I don't get killed on shipping.

This would be an excellent opportunity for G&R or BCM to offer a field repair kit of quality parts. (Especially since you can't seem to buy BCM's extractor separate from a bolt rebuild kit.) Hint, hint. I would jump at a kit that had the typical set of parts but was known top quality.

I've used DPMS and Armalite kits because they are the only ones I could find. Fortunately the only time I've had to open them is to offer parts to fellow competitors whose guns broke during a match. For now I carry one of those kits along with, piecemeal, any better quality parts I can buy separately and that I think should be included - usually just a complete spare bolt.

OP, I would pass on the ones you listed.

BCM makes some nice options that I think are much better choice.

The "field repair kits" from the good-as manufacturers are the same parts that go in their other assemblies. Like all else, buy known-good from vetted sources.

I bought mine from Armalite. They are still sealed ;)
