Now, if you can tell me how to get an MGRS or UTM overlay on top of the Google sourced terrain maps I'll do your laundry and wash your car for a year.

There are some programs out there to overlay MGRS gridlines on top of Google Earth satellite imagery, but for some inexplicable reason you can't view the hybrid topo/terrain maps in Google Earth - only in their web based Google Maps site. Makes no sense.

Any idea how to overlay MGRS or UTM on the Google Terrain maps on this website?

No problem. Gmap4 can display a UTM grid on high resolution topographic maps and on the standard Google maps. Thanks to Abraxas for posting the links to Gmap4.

The following link displays a hi-res topo map of the Yosemite area and a UTM grid (WGS84 datum).

Note that the above link ends with "&coord=utm". If you delete that parameter from the link, then the same map opens but without the UTM grid. Like so:

The UTM grid can be toggled on/off. Click Menu ==> UTM - LatLng - Off.

Some topo maps were printed with an older UTM grid based on the NAD27 datum. That grid is shown as thin black lines and will be offset by a fixed distance from the Gmap4 UTM grid which uses the newer WGS84 datum.

Now about that pile of dirty laundry...

Thanks for the Gmap4 tip on using UTM grids. That is my favorite grid for easily estimating distances on a topo map. Really nice to be able to switch between road map, satellite, USGS and hi-res topo versions. even includes current declination.
