Im looking for a new watch, the Casio G-Shock to be more specific.

I prefer the analog face.

Anyone own one? How is it? Im not sold on the rubber strap it comes with and it looks like it has SCREWS holding the pins in, can that be swapped out for a different band?

I refuse to spend $300+ for a watch.

I have been wearing a Freestyle Shark for the past 5 years an it works perfect .

Anyone?

Avoid the Casio G-shock G100-1BV.

I thought this watch was going to be the ticket but the digital portion is impossible to see and harder to use. Definitely not the bargain I thought it was.

Thats the exact one I was looking at tonight... I was having a hard time figuring it out as well.

I dont really mind the digital readout, I prefer analog.

Is it uncomfortable?

It is quite comfortable but impossible to read in any outdoor light. It is either too bright out or too dark. The grey on black digital display is just too small to read without stopping to stare at it. Then, you end up hitting the "Hour" button trying to start the stop watch or the light and instead you send the hands spinning. I just hate it for anything other than wearing it to tell time with the hands.

If you have really low expectations, you won't be disappointed.

Timex makes an Ironman analog/digital that you might consider.

I like the G-shocks. They hold up well through shock, vibration, and moisture. I finally broke one a month or two ago after about ten years of use. I bought another like it, but I've also been looking at stepping up a bit and going to one of the Suuntos.

The G-shock bands suck. I replaced mine with a Maratac Zulu, which is now going on five years of wear. The problem is the adaptors that are required which seem to split once a year. I'd like a better, more durable option.

There are several threads on watches where particular models of G-shocks and others are hashed out.

My issue has been with this one, particular G-Shock; it's crap.

I have this same G-Shock on my wrist now.

It is fine but mine keeps poor time with the analog portion.

It runs fast, to the tune of several minute per month.

I've had it several years, so perhaps the battery is running low and is screwing with the time keeping, I don't know.

It is not uncomfortable but is a thick case, and I don't care for the strap much either.

When I see people at matches, shoots or classes, and they have $2000+ built AR's, $500+ worth of multicam clothing and a $10 gshock, it sort of makes you wonder where their priorities are.

I have a lumtec I wear for most heavy lifting, no issues, and it looks awesome.

Hahaha that's awesome.

Well I don't own a single STITCH of multicam, I have at least that in my cheapest AR, I own a decent watch now, I just have ZERO use for a watch that costa as much as my carbines.
I have to agree, the luminox look like the Cadillacs of watches, my priorities are in my carbines

+1...when the hands are down, you can not read the digital portion. It makes figuring out what in the hell date it is difficult.

My god, that's the most appropriate typo I've ever seen.

You own one also?

What do you think of the strap, particularly when youre working or shooting, does it get uncomfortable?

I'm used to Velcro or cloth straps, I haven't worn a rubber strap since I was a kid.

From the looks of it, you can't just throw any strap on it? I seen the screws that hold it, I try and avoid SCREWS. When possible, one more thing to loc-tite

I use a G-shock, similar to this one:

http://scene7.zumiez.com/is/image/zumiez/162717-0001?$product_detail$

Got it at walmart for $60.

Recently splurged on a Suunto Ambit. Have training in July. Will report back after field use.

A watch is one of those items you can spend a little or a lot on.

My preference in a field watch these days is a Suunto, and I've had good experience with a new Suunto Core Military. It is one of the more full featured ABC (Altimeter, Barometer, Compass) watches out there, and you can get a decent price at REI with one of their 20% off coupons.

http://stuffmikelikes.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Suunto_Core_All_Black_Front_500.jpeg

The beater watch in my gym bag is a classic Casio G-Shock DW6900 I picked up at Walmart for $50. It replaced a Timex Ironman I bought at a P/X about twelve years ago and lasted far longer than I would have expected. The G-Shock is so common that you can't walk into a mall without seeing a kiosk with dozens of different models.

But I also have an appreciation for higher end watches, and though it wouldn't be my first choice for long walks in the woods, I think the Sinn U1 is a great watch for those who appreciate German engineering.

Mine has screws. And a weird extension.

I'm just quoting because those Sinns are some sexy ass watches.

I've been wearing g-shocks for years. The 6900 is tough to beat for the price. I haven't had a chance to see their aviator series in person but I've heard good things about them.
High Gear makes a few watches similar to Suunto ABC watches but at that price point there is no reason not to buy one.

My Dad has been running a Suunto dive watch for over ten years (don't know the model) as his dive watch and has done a whole lot of dry suit diving in the ice and off the coast of New England in it. He hasn't found an excuse to replace it yet. Tough little mofo. I plan on one in the next couple years.

I understand your reservation on the screws but I have had zero issue with them over the years. I cannot say the same for those using the spring loaded pins, I've killed more than a couple...

They cost more than ten bucks!

This is one of my favorite watches.

The dial is clear and easy to read and it hasnthendate. The tritium makes is very easy to read at night. And it's wicked light.

Not that I am a watch snob or anything, I like specific items to do specific things. There are somethings you do not skimp on and a watch is one of them. Fashion statements aside, there are some watches which are worth the cash, just for their utility.

Look at someof the digital tissots and sunto's awesome stuff.

As we all know your goal & mission should determine what you want and need. Check out watchrecon.com

My favorite watch is my Luminox 3000/3900 Navy SEAL watch with a red face. The watch band broke and the battery died but it's now back in working order. I've discovered that I really prefer to have all or most of the hours marked with numbers rather than dots, hash marks, etc. At least on an EDC watch.
Broken, but now fixed.

had a Suunto watch loved it but something happened and the altimeter went nuts so ended up with a G Shock

the G Shock is to thick and catches to much but the face stays in nicer condition the stock band sucks on the G shock IMHO to stiff not very comfy etc..

I am going to get another suunto for sure ! I used Suunto for diving for 15 years daily and they were the best instruments !

I would say try one on then pull on and off your jacket get your keys out of your pocket etc.. see if you really like it on your wrist :)
