What gives?
Is this for real?

No big deal. Easy to detect in the event your computer is infected, easy to fix.

Go to fbi.gov, it's pretty well laid out.

Basically the government cracked a crime ring that had spread malware that rerouted your DNS calls to the DNS servers of the crime ring. In so doing, the government replaced the bad DNS servers that were misrouting people to the wrong sites with good DNS servers so that people would not be rerouted. But the government does not want to be in the business of running DNS servers for ever so they are shutting them down.

If you are infected by this malware, but don't know it, and have not fixed your system, when the government shuts down their replacement DNS servers, you won't have DNS service so when you type

www.m4carbine.net you won't get a response because there will be no server responding...

I think this whole thing was pretty well-handled by the FBI.
