Hello fellas, this is my first post and actually a test as well putting up photos. I just picked up this receiver at an estate sale for 40 bucks and very confused as to what it is exactly. Carried a similar unit in the AF we called a GAU ( Ground Assault Unit ) I'm interested in building the rest if original Colt parts are available. I live in CA and there's some restrictions on the mag release button and magazine capacity, so it kinda takes some of the fun out.

I'm mainly into WW2 items and usually prefer collectibles like K98's M1 Carbines, etc. So I may be looking to trade locally. Any idea what I should consider the value as? I see reproductions from several MFGS and the prices are everywhere. And again, I can't even nail down exactly what this is to do effective research on my own.
Thanks in advance for any help.

It's going to be helpful to see barrel markings.
Any markings on the bolt or the carrier?
Also is there a "C" next to the forge marking?

Just checked G&R, out of stock on Colt lowers. I'm still wondering what the designation is, AR-15, M4?

Call or PM Grant, I'm sure he can help out.

As far as the designation for the upper...
Got me.
It looks like an old Sporter Sp-1 with both an A2 flash hider and A2 rear sight assembly.
I don't know what that particular model would be called.

Is the barrel profile the same under the handguards?

Tongue-in-cheek I hope...

GAU = Gun Automatic Unit

The flash hider was much longer, but the AF called it Ground Assault Unit as far back as Vietnam. I was in during the late 80's It was used at entry control points and the Flight Chief and Shift Commander always carried one

I was actually there for a rare flight jacket from the 40's WW2, it was advertised on an estate sale site and I was in line waiting at 4AM for an 8AM sale. I'm mainly into WW2 collectibles, but years ago in Massachusetts I got my concealed permit because I had to pass up a couple of Lugers one day for cheap money. I only go to estate sales that advertise military collectibles and find firearms from time to time. Most of the time, all is being sold because the owner has passed away and the wife or children just want everything gone, good price is a result.

Similar uppers new sell new with BCG for $700 and up, some going as high as $1000 or more, but I think the latter is a bit over optimistic.

If you offered your upper for $350 to $400 on the equipment exchange, it would sell as fast as you could post it. I think it would sell at $500 in a day or two. $700 might be at the high end although I think it would still sell

Thanks for the straight skinny.

I was really just looking for a positive ID so I could research and decide if it was an affordable choice to finish it. As stated, I carried a similar weapon in the AF and always wanted one.

LOL, not "PO'D" in the least. Your questions were vague and I really don't do much with old Colt's so I couldn't help.

One things for sure, it is NOT an M4. ;)

Depending on where you got it, you have to realize that someone might have assmbled this thing (so it is not authentic).

Guy walked in my shop not too long ago, showing off a very nice 61' fender stratocaster guitar he got off an old lady for $250. I :cray: Thing was worth at least $5000.

Sickening....any whoo good luck completing your weapon :)

Nice score. That is a early 90s Colt / Martin Marietta A2 upper with a ban era 6530 pencil barrel. It should have come on a Colt carbine rifle.

Scottryan should be along soon. He knows Colt far more than most guys.

Thank for all helpful information, think it's a 6530. Also found this site explaining many M-16 types variations all the way back to it's infancy.
