For me at least! I've looked for a long time for a mounting option for a light at or near the 12 o'clock position without using a rail forearm. I got this ideal from another thread here on m4carbine.com. https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=9527&page=6

Hahn mount, Surefire x300, Larue qd mount. Rock solid! I shoot with my arm extended and I have big hands so I have no problem working this light with my thumb. I'm not going to war with special people doing muzzle strikes on bad guys so it being out front of the gun doesn't seem to be a problem.

Check out the mossie tactics FSB mount. Will save you a lot of weight and cost.

I looked into it and yes in is cheaper but this set up is by far stronger. The Mossie is held on by two set screws pushing on the fsb, I wanted something stronger. Heavier? Yes, but like I said it's solid. Cheaper and lighter isn't always better.

How much time have you spent with the setup and on others to determine its "perfection"?

The perfect light setup?

Shooting during the day.

:D

Just playing around, whatever is perfect for you, works for you and may not work for someone else.

Not the only way to put an X300 there, but that is a nice spot for one. I prefer my pricy solution, because it gives me somewhere to put my hands that isn't a hot barrel, FSB, or sling swivel.

Perfect for ME! Until now I have used a MI FS rail with SF light. I like this better because of the light being center of the barrel.

I really like your set up. I am fighting going to a rail system as best I can but your rail does make it more comfortable when the barrel starts to heat up! I have also considered doing the same as you but by using a FF tube type forearm.

Doesn't the Surefire X300 come with a built in rail mount? Why did you go with the Larue mount?

In the thread I linked, the guy testing just the Hahn mount and SF x300 stated that he thought that after prolonged firing the plastic mount rails that the x300 comes with seemed to "soften" a little from the heat of the barrel. He then remounted the SF with the metal Larue which seemed not to transfer any heat to the SF.

This is why i went with a Mossie Tactics light mount instead, to essentially nullify the heat issue. I consider it my "perfect" light setup.

Why would you be fighting going in a direction that you acknowledge is better for you all around?

That hand guard he posted a picture of is free floated.

I don't want a railed forearm because of it's weight. It does weigh more than the standard m4 handguard doesn't it? I also don't like all the sharp edges on the rail. I know I can cover them but when I just want it to mount a light I think a rail is over kill for me.

I have been thinking about getting a FF tube forearm that I can put a light on. I wonder what a tube weighs compaired to a rail?

You might want to check out the AR15 weight calculator....

http://vuurwapenblog.com/calc.html

The point being, if you weigh the double shielded M4 handguards, the Hahn mount, and the Larue x300 mount......

Does it weigh much less than say a 11" or 13" Troy TRX Extreme, shaved gas block, and DD fixed front sight?

My question is how much you have used a mounted light, in what conditions/circumstances, and how much you have used this one before proclaiming it to be "perfect"?
To me, "perfect" is a pretty lofty statement. I have been using a specific light setup for several years, I think that it could be improved, and I have used several different setups over a decade or so in several different conditions.
Just asking for perspective.

Man, somebody should really make a chart of various hand guard weights... Wait...

;)

Typically a 9.0 FF tube with low profile gas block and clamp on front sight will weigh less than plastic hand guards and an FSB.

The C4 FSP rail is remarkably light (weighs less than an MI rail and VLTOR mount plus double shield handguards), free floated, and IMHO worth all the added bulk.
