View Full Version : Looking for a small bag / case to hold range tools.

I have a relative who remembers to bring everything in the armory to the range except for tools. Inevitably he needs something and doesn't have it, so I'd like to help him out and give him a small tool kit.

I don't know whether to keep this concise, so the short version:

I have seen one of these in person and I found it to be a very poorly constructed piece of gear. If a decent, reputable U.S. made piece is available, I'd much rather buy that.
It's more or less a gun rug with ~8-10 magazine sized slots

Does anyone know of something along these lines that's not a piece of junk? So far I've come up with a "U.S. Peacekeeper" model that similar, but I don't know anything about their quality, and based on pricing and limited info on their site, I'm pretty sure it's similar to the bulldog.

Extended version:
I'm more or less looking to hold
folding allen wrench set
folding torx wrench set
a couple of small wrenches (scope rings)
a couple of punches
small bore sighter
small bottle of oil
small pistol cleaning kit (the ones that store in their own handle)

Any ideas or directions to look would be great. I'd also be open to a small "ditty bag" if it had a modest amount of organization.

Thanks in advance!

I have one of these:

http://prostores2.carrierzone.com/servlet/emdomusa/Detail?no=43

Designed by our very own moderator, militarymoron.

It works very well. The material is handy for breaking down a BCG and cleaning/lubing in the field, without losing the pins for retaining a firing pin or extractor. Those little Velcro doodads are most handy.

The two zippered pockets hold a surprising amount of stuff. They could hold what you list with extra room. But it rolls up into something you can stuff into thr back pocket of your jeans.

And the zippered pocket is big enough to hold an entire spare BCG in a ziplock, lubed and ready to go.

Zulu I believe makes a real nice bag for ITS called the discrete carry bag I think, quite expensive though but real nice.

I think that the picture is a bit deceptive regarding size. This thing is ~11x7x2.

Thanks for the input, I'm checking into Zulu's offerings now.

Why waste money on something branded when a cheap tool bag from Home Depot would work just as well? Hell, I see a bunch of guys roll up with fishing tackle boxes. Especially since you're buying it for someone else who, in all likelihood, won't give a rats ass about it beyond being thankful he now has some tools. I guarantee you can find something that will be perfectly acceptable for $10 or less at any hardware store.

If he doesn't have the wherewithal to bring tools to the range in the first place, I doubt he's going to appreciate some super tacticool-branded 57 pocketed organizer sew with Chris Costa's beard hair.

Ultimately, because I try to avoid buying absolute junk. In the case of that bulldog case up there, it's pretty much a simple streamlined solution that *might* actually be used, which is the point.

The why? He's family, and he's one of those "bring everything in the safe" guys, so there's no reason to make more bulk if it's not necessary.

It doesn't have to be quite as low drag as your last statement, but if Tactical Tailor or someone along those lines made something comparable, it'd be worth the extra $40.

I have a tact tailor range bag I got for like $30 I use for my pistols, and on skd eagle has a small and medium range bag for like $20-30 depending on the size if you want quality for cheap.

I have this one as my range bag, its not a small/compact range bag but carries everything i need for the range, magazines, 2 pistol rugs, alot of rounds, tools, eye/ear pro, hell it even has a pouch for a nalgene bottle. Ive had this one for about 4 years now, and have yet to have a problem with it.

But they make a smaller one that may be a little better suited to what you're looking for.

Have you looked for a tool roll or something similar to hold those items?
Crafstman has one for under $15 that would hold everything you mentioned. You'd probably have to use a seam ripper on a couple pockets to get the cleaning kit and oil in but it would be cheap and easy.

HD carries a nicer roll on their website.

I'm on my phone or I'd be nice and link for ya.

Mallow, funny that you mention it, but I was thinking something along those lines as a backup. Tool rolls are definitely more of a pain, but they work and stuff doesn't get all jumbled up. Lucky for me, I've got some time to dig something up before I need it.

US Peacekeeper quality is not good at all...especially the zippers.

I keep all my "range associated" tools - except the staple gun in a plano fishing tackle box: cleaning kit, oil, sight tool, spare parts, etc

I have two range bags a long dewalt tool bag big enough for a broken down AR and all my kit and a large cheaper than dirt nock off tool bag when I'm not carrying a long gun. The tackle box can go in either.

I use this for my range tools and goodies. Also makes a decent bag o' doom.

I know I already mentioned a tool roll up as they're handy if space is at a premium but this is my set up: http://img.tapatalk.com/473f320c-b30e-13ea.jpg

The rest of the rod is in use tonight cleaning my .41. This goes with me to the range and worse case scenario sits in my car unused but it is small enough to not be a bother. I also break it out at cleaning time.
