Did an improvised shoot house this morning. I fired a single round inside the structure and WOW was it loud. Windows are even blown out of the structure and it was very loud...

like shooting a 9mm pistol with no ear pro. I was suprised. I had to get ear pro for the rest of the practice...

In the words of Def Leppard,

"Too loud, man, too loud!!"

As long as you're shooting a supersonic projo you're gonna get a crack.

I see. You wait till I am gone and then decide to go over there and shoot it up. :D

Heck the sound of the round hitting the steel seems really loud even if the rifle wasnt.

I want to move to AZ for the shooting.
Long range everywhere.
And awesome tactical/practical facilities.

What does your wife think about her living room window. Lol. Try shooting a lower pressure load

Why do 14.5'' suppressed guns sound louder than 10.3/11.5'' guns?

Unsuppressed doesn't sound loud when you are doing it in defense of you life.

Why do 14.5'' suppressed guns sound louder than 10.3/11.5'' guns?

Higher pressure and higher velocity from projectile

Higher pressure...

A longer barrel does not produce higher pressures than a shorter barrel. The further down the barrel, the lower the pressure

rob_s pointed out that ear protection is still needed with suppressors. When I asked him to clarify his opinion on suppressors in another thread, he said

That's part of it. To that, I suggest that anyone who is interested in suppressors GO HEAR ONE before you proceed further. Ideally go hear the exact can(s) you're considering, but at least go hear a similar can in the same caliber with similar ammo. I say similar ammo because if you go hear a guy shoot his 9mm with subsonics and then you get one and feed it 115 grain ammo you will be disappointed in the result.

The other part of it is the inverse of what IG said above. I'm almost never shooting alone, or where everyone else is suppressed, meaning the can is pretty much useless. Even at events where I am sort of alone (like a match where each shooter takes turns) I just wind up having to put the ears back on when the next guy shoots.

Finally, 5.56 cans as attached to ARs are very rarely hearing safe. Which means you should be wearing ears anyway, which (to me) means "what's the point?" I'm going to go less deaf more slowly?

Personally, I'd rather buy a set of Sordins. I can hunt, and have hunted, wearing them, and they cost about 1/4 what a good 5.56 can costs. "operationally" I get that cans do things Sordins can't, but I am not operating.

I'll let you try my 300 AAC Blackout, once you build it that is. From what I'm hearing, you will be surprised at the difference between it, and the 5.56, even with supersonic ammo.

I am interested (somewhat) in this cartridge for suppressed purpose. My LGS has a 300 AAC blackout upper and 200 rounds of Rem subsonic for $1040. It has the blackout 51T FH already mounted kind of "suggesting" the way forward with this setup. :)
